Green told the schools he wanted an essay contest and the writers needed to be Good Students and needed to have overcome adversity. One of the wins students, he came from new orleans to live with relatives after Hurricane Katrina left his family home owners. Without those things that happened to me, i wouldnt be who i am today. I come with the experience that i will never change ever in my life. Another essay winner grew up in a refugee camp on the ivory coast before moving here when he was five. We move to developing news we have had through mornings on 2. New reports of damage after a strong earthquake hit southern japan. We are understanding some people may be trapped underneath collapsed houses. The usgs upgraded the quakes magnitude to 6. 2. That 6. 2 has been followed by a number of aftershocks. Strong ones, including a magnitude 6 just about an hour ago. The quakes are centered near tamana near the East China Sea highlighted there by the epicenter mark. They happened at 9 30 p. M. Local time in japan. This morning we have been getting pictures and these videos coming into the newsroom showing some of the early damage reports to the area. We have been seeing a lot of bottles off Grocery Store shelves. People in their homes saying my windows cracked, my walls cracked. A lot of this thrown off the shelves. At this point we understand one building has been reported to be collapsed. We understand people are being treated at hospitals. Five people we know have serious injuries, and there are reports again some people may be trapped in the rubble of a building. We will stay on top of this developing news. The headline here a 6. 2 earthquake in japan. We do know, however, there was no risk of a tsunami, and that was the early news out there morning. Reading into it, it was a shallow earthquake. Just seven miles deep. You know, it was very powerful and a lot of witnesses reported about 30 seconds of violent shaking. Also new this morning, Fairfield Police closed down streets and issued a sheltner place overnight as they searched for a suspect in a deadly shooting. Investigators say Kyle Matthew Amos shot and killed a 28year old fairfield resident at a parking lot last wednesday morning. Detectives searched the home last night looking for amos. A s. W. A. T. Team responded as backup. For hours Police Closed off the area of stevens and james streets near highway 22012. Amos fled before they arrived. He is considered armed and dangerous. A backlash over a North Carolina law which restricts which bathrooms transgender people can use. Ringo starr, the latest artist to cancel a concert there. Similar laws have been proposed in South Carolina and tennessee. Observers say the laws appear to be a response to the Supreme Court rule that legalized same sex marriage across the country last year. But there are signs of change, as in kentucky where the state just approved a new marriage license form for both gay and straight customers. Meanwhile, San Francisco commune any says it may drop out of an annual competition for bus drivers to be held in North Carolina next month. The chronicle reports muni is considering withdrawing even though San Francisco is the current defending titleholder. The city has already banned all nonessential travel to North Carolina over the transgender bathroom bill. The south bay, the owner of a body shop is facing charges of Insurance Fraud. Juan carlos ortiz owns carlos body shop in san jose. Investigators say he, his wife and six other people took part in an Insurance Scheme in which he allegedly staged crashes and filed false claims. Through an anonymous tip, the silicone valley Fraud Task Force discovered they bought Insurance Coverage under fake names and addresses and reported crashes along highway 17 and through Santa Clara County. We have evidence that suggests that the accidents never occurred. It was coordinated lies for the purpose of getting paid out for the insurance claims. Investigation say Insurance Fraud affects everyone as all drivers end up paying higher premiums. All the suspects are due in court next month. Ortiz paces up to 31 years in prison. Santa clara county deputies have stopped a counterfeit operation that spanned that county. Authorities say eric aspden, the illegal operation out of the condo he lease inside cupertino. Investigators say he used easily available equipment, including a laptop, 100 cotton paper, and paper cutters to make the fake 20 bills. They say he shipped the bills to buyers really across the country. Officials say the fakes are close to the real thing, but if you look closely at Andrew Jacksons hair on the fake bill, the detail is a little blurry. That was enough for businesses in virginia to contact police, who worked with investigation in the south bay. Mr. Aspden alone was responsible for the shipment of upwards of 2,000 packages a year of counterfeit currency linked to 30 different states. Investigators say aspden never dried to use the bills himself. Now they are targeting the people who bought the fake money from him and some of those people are right here in the bay area. Aspden is being held in the Santa Clara County jail while officials decide whether he will face trial here or in fairfax, virginia. Another story we have been following through mornings on 2 is a proposal by amc theaters to allow texting in Movie Theaters. The ceo is saying you cant ask millennials to turn off their phones. Last november turkey, which is a member of nato, shot down a russian fighter jet when it flew too low to the Turkish Border with syria. Russia has not breached turkish airspace since then. The city of San Francisco is being offered almost 3. 5 to settle planes associated with the deadly plane crash at sfo three years ago. The boeing 777 clipped the seawall at end of the runway causing the plane to cartwheel and burst into flames. The money goes towards legal costs, airport damages and compensation for the citys insurance company. Three teenage girls died in that crash. U. S. Safety investigators blame the crash on pilot error. Proposed financial settlement will need approval from the board of supervisors. The panama government raided the law firm accused of Money Laundering for highprofile international clients. It lasted more than a day. There not been any arrests so far. The socalled Panama Papers scandal came to light earlier this month when an anonymous source released 11 million documents that embarrassed clients at the law firm, including friends of russian president Vladimir Putin, the president of argentina, and the father of british Prime Minister david cameron. A man started sexually assaulting a 17yearold and the friend used periscope to broadcast it on the internet. Well, someone in another state who saw the live stream called the police. Now the man and that woman face charges that could send them to prison for many years. The fbi is now joining the investigation into the search for a missing twoyearold girl whose mother was found dead last week in a San Francisco park. The fbi says no one has seen Arianna Fitts since april 1. The body of her mother was found friday in mclaren park. Agents say nicole fitts and her daughter spent time in San Francisco, san mateo, santa cruz, oakland, and emeryville. The Organization Justice for Mario Woods Coalition, they want a civil rights investigation of San Francisco police. Coalition members stood on city hall steps yesterday saying the deaths of mario woods, amilcar perezlopez, and alex nieto are a camp of examples of excessive use of force by the police. They say an under pent investigation is needed to determine if there is a pattern of discrimination within the department. In a letter sent to state attorney general pamela harris, it point today a set of racist and homophobic texts by police officers. We cannot have a criminal Justice System that is tainted by racism that can be accepted by the community and can be won that works. The letter says a Justice Department review is a step in the right direction, but its not enough. Since it can only make non binding recommendations.
