Micah Montgomery day. Antibullying and childrens literacy work through her gift of reading campaign. Micah montgomery. Hi. How does that sound . When i hear it it brings tears to my eyes. Thats a big deal. Its a big deal and im very humbled of it. A lot of work has been done but done for a purpose for our children. So its not so much about me in this day, we want to rally around the kids so they know how important literacy is. I have been reading to my two children since they were infants, it was a fact that my wife and i were going to do this. Just had a conversation last night with my son, i said i love to see how confident he has become, he wants to read himself. How important i know your mission is to encourag to read, but also to encourage parents to read with their children. That is absolutely right. The little girl who wanted a tale. Isaiah wants to read, i purposefully used large words, the interaction between the parent and child is there. You have to explain these words to a prek or third grader. If a child can pick up a profane word and use it in context they can tell you what motivation needs, they need to be exposed to that. So they are really designed to have that intimate relationship with the parent or the giver or the caregiver or the teacher. Talk about bullying, bullying has been around for the longest time. Do you think if more people did what you did it would slowly start to go away, are we ever going to get ahold of this problem. That is a great question. A quote from
Sharon Anthony bow when says the biggest difference between being a stewart i and aggressive is how your words and or behavior impacts the wellbeing and rights of others. A lot of people want to be lead oars, they just dont know how. So, by teaching these kids at a young age that the root is lump and loving yourself first so you can then love others i think by starting with that we have a very good chance, we have a very good chance. I didnt learn how to be a leader until i was in graduate school. Why is that . Kids want the attention, whether its positive or negative. They want it, you figure bullies have people rallying around them for fear. But they if they learned how to be a successful or how to be a leader in a positive way theyd have a road map on how to do that. I find myself through reading to my two little boys im recovering, we blew through charlie and the chocolate factor row. I like saying mommy had her teacher read this to her when she was in first grade and now i get to read it to you. Do you find you pass that on to your little daughter . Absolutely. She is 12 now. She wouldnt want to be called little. Her name is mylan. When i was little i loved dr. Seuss, my
Favorite Book call add panda cake, my mom would read that to me when i was young, i couldnt read but i would memorize it it so would come to her and say look mommy i can read. A panda cake was my favorite story, i loved all kinds. I definitely share them with my daughter. And your daughter was the inspiration for your first book. What was the inspiration for you to write . Sit down and to do what you did . So, when mylan was about sixish, she had this fascination with tails. She would tie anything to her and really only harass me with it, she didnt want to show anybody else. Im lucky, thank you. But, i started off as journaling exercise just documenting that she used to do that because i wanted to embarrass her when she got older. It evolved into so much more. It really did. It turned into a story i could share with others that was centered around her journey of accepting who she was, whether that be different, she is loved exactly how she was created. And then she becomes a child entrepreneur in the book. I love it. Well
Micah Montgomery, thank you for joining us, bringing a gift of reading to us on the 29th. Little house on the prayer rye. Loved those books. So if i tried to pull a fast one on them. We invited a

Many of these students come from single parent homes, facing financial struggles. Dads in prison, been in prison all my life. The students say this trip to south africa is a journey about self discovery and seeing others who survived. These are students in south africa singing to a group of students who made the journey last year. Organizers say this is not a lease your trip but a necessity. A transform testify experience. The students will travel to cities, townships and rural areas. Meeting piers, visiting government and historic sites. Travel has the ability to teach you things. So many lessons at once that it will take you years and years and years and multiple experiences, you have the one opportunity. Even before em bing on this trip there were

Im trying to get some of that childhood out before the real world hit me. These students tell me they will have memories that will last them a lifetime. Sfo amber lee ktvu fox 2 news. Jane bradbury is joining us to talk about a special back she has been able to put together, she worked at a number of museums on both coasts. Tomorrow night in advance of this event she is joining us in studio, tomorrow she is speaking at the womans club about her book. Called american style and spirit. It sells the story of the discovery of more than 300 items of clothing as well as accessory from her an crester, what we see here are some what she was able to cure rate from her aunts attic. Intricate and amazing designs, we are happy to tell you that the exhibit is running and i will give you more information on that. I like to welcome jane to our studios. Thank you for having me. This book is stunning. I cant believe the condition you found some of these items. As if they were preserved but they werent done anything special. I dont know why the moths were not up there in that attic. But, it really was i cant founding. I think whether it was heat or what, but they were really very well preserved. And you are looking at items from the turn of the century into the 1990s. Yeah, actually the first dress is 1856, believe it or not. Worn by a woman who is my namesake, she was an amazing woman, she and her husband started the first methodist thee lodge call school for
African American men in the south, these women not only dressed well but doing things for their community. As you unearthed these treasures that were brought to you by your aunt you are going through history, but its personal for you, you learned about the family itself. Absolutely. So when i first went up there as a teenager she give me a dress worn by that same woman i just mentioned, bought in paris in 1880 and so which had whale bones, a huge long train. When i try dad on i felt myself wrapped answer whole different person, it was a moment that my interest in historic fashion began. Right. But after fashion story of edward may in order and i went up into the attic we started pull out things from the drunks, more and more and more appeared from the 1800s, 190 east, all the way through the centuries, there were examples from every single decade. Hi no idea of the extent and it was if those clothes were looking at me and saying. How did you research, how did you go back an find who is the lady who wore this. Well in the house, not only were there all those clothes and accessories, there were 10,000 letters. Perfect. Dating back to the 1880s. And those letters went into an archive in wisconsin,
Wisconsin Historical society. In addition to that, they had saved 2000 photographs and family films and objects like prom books from a continue. Or menus from luxury ocean liners going to rio or going to europe. There was all this stuff, so we were able to use the objects, use the letters, and learn about these peoples lives. Sort of piece these mysteries together. And cloaks. This book comes alive because we have all those quotes from those letters. Do you ever think about through your research into modern day what we are leaving for our children, i mean so many people spend 20 on a teacher, wear it four times and throw it away. Yes i think from my research i could tell these women did not have the disposable attitude toward cloth that we do. They really very careful when they bought things, no impulse buying. And they tend to remodel them. They went out of date they would remodel them. All i can say now if there are special clothes that you associate with a special memory or special event, put a little tag on it so to say i wore this then, this is how i felt about it, put it on the hanger and so if your children find it, they will know those stories, i wish i had asked more questions to my aunt. We had to dig up those stories again because i hadnt asked enough questions. Leave a little story for them. I love it. Thank you very much. I want to let our viewers know there is information on tomorrows night easy vent with jane. When you are there look for it. Of course find it on the ktvu mobile app. The book is incredible.
