To other news we have been following through the morning. A controversial measure to declare california a sanctuary state is heading to the capital. Rob malcolm is live in pittsburg where the issue of providing sanctuary to undocumented immigrants is a major topic of debate there. Reporter yes. Pittsburg is in the process of voting on their sanctuary status. We had a chance to talk to people about the decision last night. Yesterday the state Senate Approved legislation 2712 by party lines. This is similar to other cities like San Francisco, oakland and san jose. It prevents local and state Law Enforcement from using their resources to investigator arrest people for immigration violations. But the policy is facing opposition from police groups. Senate pro testimony kevin of los angeles amended the measure to allow the department of corrections to notify the federal government up to two months before an undocumented immigrant convicted of violent or serious felonies is released. Personally i think it is important for everyone to feel safe at home. They made this their home. It is a slap in their face. It is okay to work in the fields and take the jobs we dont like, but then you turn around and theyre trying to get their education and a lot of these kids are born here. They know nothing but where they live in the u. S. , in california. Sure, there are processes to become legal. And thats fine. But turn around and allow these kids to have safety. You know. Allow the parents to be safe. We should become a sanctuary city. I think we already are actually. We are united so i think we already are. I think we should. It killed four people and forced 80 others out of their homes. The fire was started by a candle inside of an apartment. Ten people are still staying at the west oakland youth center. However the shelter will end or close by 7 00 this morning. The red cross and the city of oakland are trying to find other housing options. Donations are being collected. A lot of the members of the Community Say really a Second High School is desperately needed. The existing high school, dublin high, where we are this morning has seen crowded classrooms as of late. And they are expecting a jump in enrollment in the next several years. Enrollment in the School District expected to increase by more than 6,000 students over the next seven years. Thats the prediction. Its been a year already since the school board agreed it would build a Second High School here in dublin that would accommodate at least 2500 students. There are also two online petitions that are circulating right now, calling for this project to get started as soon as possible. Parents and students say its time to build. Im hoping im hoping it gets built soon. Honestly we need it. We need it a lot. You were saying you might try to work there. Yeah. I want to be an art teacher. Trying to get my bachelors degree. But i need to get the credentials and everything before i get there. Kids are coming into dublin. Talk about families with kids. With little ones now. You look at the future too. Theyre going to really need to have that high school. Reporter right now, the school board is considering several possible sites for a new school, mainly on the east side of dublin. In terms of how to pay for the prong, voters last year pass the a 238 million bond measure that will in part go to Fund Construction for a Second High School here in the city. So the money is already there. And a lot of parents and a lot of the members of the Community Say the District Needs to select a site and move forward with this project. But even once they do that, that Second High School here in the city of dublin likely will not open to students until at least the year 2021. I would have to say in the bay area we have an excellent caliber when it comes to using social media for messaging our residents. Especially here in Mountain View, i am proud of the efforts that we make on social media. But palo alto, san jose, they all do excellent jobs when it comes to actually utilizing social media to the best of their ability. And in creative ways to get their messages across and just to communicate with the public. At the end of the day, thats what we do to talk with our residents. Unfortunately crimes are also happening on social media. You and the department and departments being on it, that helps you track down the crimes taking place. Correct . Correct. Officer nelson, can i have you talk about a recent case on the news, on our broadcast, the case out of chicago where two young boys are accused of raping a girl and putting it on facebook live. We were having a good talk in the news room about what is the responsibility of those people who are either intentionally watching the attack online or come upon it and cant make sense of what theyre seeing. Do those two people have a responsibility in reporting what is going on or are they just able to say, i didnt know it was going on. It wasnt me . It is interesting the way that facebook is actually the way that the code is written for social media sites, especially facebook, the algorithm says that if you you are more likely to see live video or highly produced video based on what that social media site wants you to see. So if it passes you by and it is in your feed and you dont actually watch it, you probably wont see it later on or youre not going to be susceptible to seeing Something Like that, especially if your friends are not sharing it. If you see something disturbing on social media, report it. It can be a little difficult especially if it is online and happening halfway across the country. Anything that you can do to try to alert authorities to what is going on and what you may be seeing, that is important to do. In this case, if the attack is happening in chicago and im in Mountain View, do i call 911 . Do i try to look up chicago pd . How does somebody report something disturbing that they see online . If you can find out where the crime is happening, absolutely call the local authority for where you think the crime is occurring. You can also report something to the fbi online.
