After decades of discussion, the Golden Gate Bridge officials are installing a suicide barrier on the bridge. Rob malcolm joining us with a look at the safety changes ahead. Rock. Yeah, good morning, guys, we have been here all morning, and we know there has been an effort to prevent suicides here at the Golden Gate Bridge with all sorts of signage up where people can call a number, if they find themselves in crisis. Now, this suicide barrier, expected to be constructed later this year has a cost of about 200 million. Its also designed out of wire metal rope, and designed to have a hard surface. In 2016, 40 people jumped to their deaths from the Golden Gate Bridge. The suicide net will cost to 0 million, and 200 million, and the net will be attached to the base of the bridge, extending 20 feet down from the sidewalk and 20 feet out from both sides of the bridge. It will span more than a mile and a half over open water. The work should be completed by 2021. And those behind the project tylotes the net wont tell us the net wont take away from the look of the bridge, and this morning we heard from a spokesperson who told us what we can expect to see early on. The first things well see are the again of may, some contractor fencing is going to go up along the approaches, the contractors will be working underneath the bridge for several months to come, taking specific measurements so they can go away, and manufacture that net to specific, precise measurements. They created a reenactment. The officers did order him to drop the knife. He did not drop the knife, and the shots were fired. Reporter two plain clothes officers first to arrive identified themselves and lopez advanced with this kitchen knife making slashing motions. Hehe says lopez was going to kill him if given the opportunity and anyone in the way. Reporter but the knife has been a point of contention during two years of protests. Witnesses differ. Some said perez lopez had dropped the knife before he was shot. Gascon says its location doesnt support that. The knife was thrown into the street, well into the lane of traffic, several feet from perez lopez hand. Reporter they questioned why five of the six bullets hit him in the back if he was advancing. Gascons explanation. Perez lopez would have been able to turn 90 to 180 degrees by the time the first bullet hit him.
