We are continue to follow the breaking news from San Francisco, a crowded area in the Mission District is shut down tonight after a 5 alarm fire broke out at a store this afternoon on Mission Street. Bright orange flames and thick smoke shot out of the building around 1 00 p. M. This afternoon. Firefighters are on the scene now checking for hot spots but the damage is still impacting the area. We have also learned the store that burn said may have had problems in the past. Ktvus patti lee is live from the scene. What have you learned about the business . A couple things. It has not been sited but there are complaints about the way the merchandise was stored, a fire hazard but no citations. The main concern right now is that parts of this building could still collapse. The fire is not yet out. It is mostly contained. Investigators are here, they are trying to find the cause of the fire, which started around 1 00 p. M. And devoured this building which was made mostly of wood. Three other buildings were also damaged. Including an Apartment Building where 20 people live. These buildings built before fire codes existed and firefighters say they were lucky this had retrofitted brick walls that made it more sturdy but the fire chief said it is the merchandise and the way it was stored that led to complaints in the past and made it a danger today. I was just told that with this particular property i believe they were sited in 2009 and 2013 with over crowded much much merchandise.
