Good evening, im julie haener and im frank somerville. The republican candidates held the final debate and the show went on without donald trump. Ross palumbo is in iowa where trump made good on his threat to boycott. Good evening. Good evening. Donald trump came out saying that fox news did apologize but it was too little, too late. He was on one stage on one side of town. And the debate was here on another stage without him but no matter where he was physically, his presence was certainly felt. Donald trump was not on this stage. Lets address the elephant not in the room tonight. He was still on everyones mind. Im a maniac. And everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly and, ben, you are a terrible surgeon. Now that weve gotten the donald trump portion out of the way. And jump to trump who walked across this podium. The very issue he inspired within the gop himself of course establishment versus antiestablishment candidates. A 45yearold construction out there. He does not want to talk about the politics who is part of the establishment. I guess im establishment because barbara bush is my mom. Ill take that. They took on traditional topics. Google says that foreign terror is number 1. Isis is the most dangerous group in the history of map kind. Hunt them down and completely destroy them. And comments were aimed squarely at the. Ted, please attack ted. Jeb, please attack ted. If you guys can one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage. Dont worry, im not leaving the stage no matter what you ask me. Hillary clinton was the other frequent target. She is not qualified to be president of the United States. But those wanting to be president here also discussed abortion. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of children being murdered in the womb, i cant think of anything bigger than that in obama care. We have seen in six years of obama care its a disaster. Have you already proved you cannot be trusted on this issue . If you look at the quote. You went on i support a path to citizenship. So do you. But echoes of donald trump still persisted. We need to stop allowing Political Correctness to dictate our policies and in the end, paradoxally, his absence may still have been felt on stage. You want to trump trump on education but we are not going to beat Hillary Clinton who is willing to say or do anything to win an election. Reporter even though donald trump was not here, he still managed to. Com name. Take a look at this graphic. Google was tracking internet searches and can you see right there on top, donald trump throughout the entire debate. Every now and again, marco rubio and ted cruz did peak but it was donald trump all the way. Marco rubio was not speaking to reporters afterwards. Ted cruz, we caught up after he tried to get out of the back hallways. We need a leader that we can trust. Thank you so much. Senator, how does it feel having the focus on you for the very first time. You are not supposed to be back here. Reporter senator ted cruz had very little to say about his performingance. As for viewers, frank and julie, seems as if many people and many analysts do believe that ted cruz and marco rubio came out on top. From your perspective, being there and watching the debate, who do you think did well . Reporter you know, i think that the data that google gathered was pretty accurate. Ted cruz and marco rubio got the most time it was actually marco rubio who had a little more time. This was a difficult time. This was the first time that the moderators played clips. Marco rubio was shown how he was flip flopping on immigration and ted cruz the came. Those were intense moments, very difficult for both of them to respond to but they both handled it very well. I think that they probably kept the standings pretty much the same. Donald trump still on top followed by ted cruz and marco rubio. Ross palumbo is in iowa tonight thank you. Stay with ktvu for the latest from iowa russ will be in des moines right on through mondays caucuses hell post an update through twitter. The question now, how did the candidates perform tonight . Let us bring our guests in. On the left of the screen is james tailor, a professor of Political Science at the universities of San Francisco. And the political analyst, brian sobel. Thank you for joining us. Well start with you, brian. What did you think about the debate without donald trump . Some analysts say it was boring. I thought that was interesting. I didnt miss any oneliner. I agree with you. I think it was a good debate. The World Without trump. I thought that marco rubio did a very good job tonight, actually. Cruz was being assaulted by a number of other people on the stage. But at the end of the night, again, i think marco rubio comes out on top. Professor, lets go to you. The same question to you about the impact without donald trump. Yeah, i agree with brian on every subject we have been on so far. Today, i found rubio to be impressive each time. I think im going to go against the green this time and say, i dont think rubio did so well because he was shown to be a flip flopper in his own face on the issue of abortion and immigration rather, excuse me, on immigration. Every line he offers was a punch line like he had practiced and rehearsed his line. He just kept trying to hit a home run and looked desperate. I think the same thing with chris christie. Their teams overprepared them to take advantage of the absence of donald trump and i think they looked desperate. Brian, back to you. Was this a tactical mistake, do you think, by donald trump to miss this debate or, in the end, it wont make any difference . Time will tell, frank. At the end the day, it wont affect donald trump. He was lacking for the spotlight. He had his own counter event tonight watched by a lot of people. And, so, it was a calculated risk he took. And at the end of the day, i dont think that it does anything to change the numbers. Professor taylor, the candidates didnt seem to go after each other or go after donald trump. They seemed to spend more time going after their democratic opponent. Did that surprise you . No. Cruz and rubio have been stalwarts or attacking Hillary Clinton can her ethics, intentions, mistakes in benghazi and ubiquitousey mails. Hillary clinton seems to be the formidable front runner even though you cant dismiss bernie sanders. They seem to be aiming at hillary. They want to aim high, rather than lower with people withing Single Digits like, say, fringes, carly fiorina. Is monday make or break for any of the candidates in the top tier. Probably not monday but after new hampshire, some of these people in the republican field have to really take a hard look, frank, at whether they can stay in the campaign and be a legitimate candidate. Brian sobel, james taylor, thank you for joining us tonight. My pleasure. Hillary clinton took to social media to share her thoughts on the gop debate. The Democratic Candidates ran a series of tweets ending with this one, with a quick video of herself looking a little bored and it reads, quote, lots of bickering, no real plans to strengthen families or keep us safe.
