I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle. And i will never, ever let you down. Its Election Night in california this tuesday, june 7, 2016. The 10 news on ktvu fox two news starts now. Good evening, everyone. Im frank somerville. And im julie haener. A historic night for women in politics. Hillary clinton took a call from president obama with congratulations on her victory. And two daughters of immigrants are likely to face off in the race for barbara boxers senate seat. San francisco d. A. Kamala harris and Orange County congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Right now Hillary Clinton is holding a solid lead in california over Bernie Sanders, the latest numbers, clinton with 62 , Bernie Sanders with 37 . Only 15 of the precincts are reporting at this moment. The former secretary of state has already talked up wins in new jersey, new mexico and south dakota tonight. Bernie sanders won the caucus in the state of north dakota, still a tight race in montana. Right now what youre looking at is a Bernie Sanders rally going on in santa monica. We do expect to hear from Bernie Sanders at some point during this newscast. Donald trump easily won californias republican primary with more than 70 of the vote. A look at the numbers, donald trump with 78 , john kasich 11 , ted cruz 8 . Thats with 15 of the precincts reporting. It was a clean sweep for donald trump, declared the winner in new jersey, new mexico, south dakota, and montana as well as california. We have Live Team Coverage with ktvu reporters on the big races, the election i celebrations and local issues tonight. We begin with ktvus Jana Katsuyama on the race for president. Reporter tonight there was a huge gravitational pull between clinton and trump, both of them gave speeches, both of them claimed their success marked a moment in history. Thanks to you, weve reached a milestone. Reporter Hillary Rodham clinton took the stage savoring the moment. Her speech came directly after a Campaign Video showing images of women in u. S. History and she paid tribute to her late mother born on june 4th, 1919. Went and thanked her supporters, many who had lived through her disappointing primary loss in 2008. She also gave praise to Bernie Sanders and his supporters. Let there be no mistake. Senator sanders, his campaign, and the vigorous debate that weve had about how to raise income, reduce inequality, increase upward mobility have been very good for the Democratic Party and for america. [ cheers and applause ] reporter Republican Donald Trump spoke from Westchester County calling his campaign and historic moment. Our campaign received more primary votes than any gop campaign in history. Reporter trump kept to a scripted speech that seemed aimed at unifying the party after top leaders sharply criticized him tuesday for his comments about a Mexican American judge. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle and i will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. Reporter trump blasted Hillary Clinton saying he was part she was part of the rig political system. To all of those Bernie Sanders voters, who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system, of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms. [ cheers and applause ] reporter trump said he would deliver a speech on monday focused on hillary and bill clinton. Clinton said in her speech that trump was temperamentally unfit for the presidency so you can see where they were drawing their battle lines tonight and it is going to be quite a battle when it comes to the general election. It is. Thank you. Now to analysis of tonights returns in the race for president , ktvus ross palombo is here joined by analyst brian sobel and usf professor of politics james taylor. All right. Look at those numbers that just came in tonight. 30point spread, no one expected a spread like that. Do you think its going to hold . I dont know. Its early. Its a bigger gap than i expected. If this is maintained and its a stunning way for hillary to go out what about you, brian . No. I dont think anybody predicted this. People thought it would be a lot closer. This is a real knockout blow if it holds and i think it has to hold. Bernie sanders is expected to speak in just a few minutes down in santa monica. What can possibly say at this point . I concede but i will keep my campaign in Movement Mode and continue to try to influence. But he has to concede at this point. Tonight . I dont think hell concede tonight but he is laying off half of his staff. That is a huge story. And something he is going to make clear as time goes on, hes got to recede now and start turning it over to hillary. President obama calling Hillary Clinton, the presumptive nominee. Is this just another kick in the head for Bernie Sanders . Its the same as nancy pelosi, jerry brown last week, the establishment has lined up with hillary as they have the entire time. The big question for Bernie Sanders. If these numbers hold, 30point deficit to Hillary Clinton, what went wrong . Bernie sanders campaigned up and down the state. Refocused everything in this state. He didnt campaign in any of the other ones. My feeling is that the electorate finally said, its time to move on. They are registering with their votes tonight. The primary system had included independence all along, hillary would not be where she is tonight. If independence were allowed to be a part of this process from day one. They have not in all of these primaries and caucuses be allowed to purchase paid. Thats been hillarys strengths. Its her weakness going forward. Regardless of whatever Bernie Sanders decides to do, what does Hillary Clinton do first thing tomorrow . When she had her speech tonight it was probably the biggest speech of her career. She managed to capture the emotion, historic moment tonight, can she sustain it and is that where this turns, as she starts being more emotional and less clinical and analytical . I think james and i were talking earlier about the fact that this was a different Hillary Clinton tonight. Much more president ial. Much more moderate. A good time to speech. It was a different Hillary Clinton. All of the visuals, all of the focal points, which we see on that stage, she looked perfect. Not trying to be sexist commenting on her appearance. Im saying in terms of anybody whether she was a man or woman, that visual, the crowd, dressed in white, arms spread like here i am, im here to lead you, was a powerful moment. Im sure were going to see that image a lot going forward. Do you think she sealed the deal, that she had the moment . I do. But she also took a lot of Bernie Sanders talking points. Inc. Them in her speech. Already starting to try to bring the sanders voters in. Lets talk about donald trump really briefly. He did pretty well tonight. Obviously he was going to win each and every state as the presumptive nominee but he had to keep 80 of the vote to prove that the gop is still behind him. Did he do it tonight . It appears so. Oh, yes. No question the gop across the nation and in california supports donald trump. How that works out over time is the real question. This is one of the most stunning moments in political history. The mixture of whats going on, all the dynamics of a woman candidate, donald trump, unprecedented Bernie Sanders, socialist, this is a phenomenal moment. Never seen anything like it. Trump is doing well. Despite the controversy talking about his Mexican American heritage, california getting 78 of the vote with 15 of the precincts reporting. We will raj the rest of the returns all night long. Thank you so much, send it back right now to frank and julie. Hillary clinton supporters gathered for a number of watch parties here in the bay area. This one was at audio nightclub south of market, oakland mayor libby schaaf was among those celebrating clintons big night. She said clinton has the qualifications, the ability and the grit to win the white house. Republicans gathered at a party in twitters building in San Francisco to watch returns and cheer on their candidates. Ktvus amber lee is there tonight. Amber . Reporter frank, dozens of people attended this event. They included current and former party leaders. A lot of them were focused on a number of races but the main intention was on donald trump. One man even brought the so called trump money to liven up the party. The party was held in whats called an incubator. A space on the fourth floor of the twitter building for startups to grow. Though twitter was not involved in the event. Hard to miss one man wearing the red trump supporter cap who handed out funny money. The Presumptive Republican nominee represents common sense and change. Trump is fun. I think among the candidates, this is fun too. Reporter some republicans including u. S. Senate candidate Doug Sondheim are not finding humor in trumps accusations that a latino judge presiding over a case involving trump is possibly biased because of the judges race. I found it very offensive personally. Extended it to muslims, his attack on the governor of new mexico, it shows a pattern which is very disturbing to me. Thats why i have not endorsed him yet. Reporter he doesnt know whether he will eventually support trump. Others say trump has their vote. What people like about him, hes expressing other peoples opinions. Thoughts. And so what you dont like about him, because he is outspoken, he is not pc. I will support trump. Let me make it very clear. We do not want Hillary Clinton has the next present of the United States. Reporter it was a mixed bag here at this party. Some republicans tell me they are ready to vote for trump right now. Others tell me they are going to wait and see if trump can unite, not divide the party. There are several months to wait and see what happens. Amber lee in San Francisco tonight, thank you. The Associated Press reports the only proposition on the statewide ballot has passed. Prop 50 would amend the state constitution to allow legislature to suspend members without pay while they are being criminally investigated. The proposition was drawn up in response to a number of recent scandals in the legislature, most notably the corruption investigation of former senator leland yee of San Francisco. Returns show right now the measure has broad support, 77 in favor, only 23 against. Again it is being declared the winner by Associated Press even though only 18 of the precincts are reporting. We want to let you know youll find uptotheminute results for all the local races at the bottom of your screen, also turned to ktvu. Com for results anytime, look for the red bar on the side. Still ahead a closely watched congressional race in the bay area, late results as the ballots continue to be counted. Apply online or at a bank of america near you. Now back to our you decide coverage, the race for the senate seat being vacated by barbara boxer. Kamala harris has a sizable lead. We inadvertently called her the San Francisco District Attorney earlier. That was of course her previous post. We apologize for that error. Loretta sanchez a congresswoman from Orange County is in second place, because this is an open primary the top two vote getters will face each other in a runoff in november. Right now the current numbers, Kamala Harris 40 , Loretta Sanchez 16 with 18 of the precincts reporting but Kamala Harris is being called the winner tonight. Ktvus Paul Chambers is live right now in San Francisco with what is shaping up to be a very good night for harris. Paul . Reporter that is so right, breaking julie, the excitement is in this crowd, still working the crowd here behind us. Talking to a lot of people who came out here to see her at delancey street, a place she is very familiar with to talk about how shes going to win the election and how its important to stay together. The state of california represents the rest of the United States. Tonight, california spoke. And it said that we are a state that is unified we are clear of purpose. Our unity is our strength and our diversity is our power. [ cheers and applause ] of. Reporter its been a long day for attorney general Kamala Harris. She started her morning in l. A. And then went to sacramento. Associated press has called the senator harris for the primary senate, people are elated that she may be the next person representing the state. Harris has been basically the front runner since beginning her campaign. If the native wins in november she will not only replace barbara boxer, harris will also become the second africanamerican woman to serve in the United States senate. Although harris has a strong hold on the bay area, her opponent has a lock of a lot of backing in southern california. Orange county will be facing off against harris, a battle that many say will be a tough as they fight to become the first woman of color in the United States in which is a really big deal. We heard from Loretta Sanchez a little while ago. Hopefully, well see what ms. Harrison stands for. I havent really gotten an indication of that yet. I know where i stand on issues. Ive got 20 years of votes. Ive taken the very tough votes against wall street on the bailout, against the iraq war. Against the socalled patriot act. So i know i stood up under pressure for those folks. Reporter it will be very interesting because we havent seen either women in the bay area campaigning but now its all going on, they are going to hit the ground running and interesting thing there, julie and frank, this will be the first time in more than 100 years that a republican will not be a candidate for the United States senate seat if the results end up with sanchez and harris moving on. All right. Paul chambers in San Francisco, thank you, paul. There were a few problems with Voting Machines in san mateo county. 10 of the 1400 electronic Voting Machines didnt function properly. Election Officials Say the machines were not coded correctly and were not producing ballots so voters were asked to use paper ballots instead. They say the problem was fortunately resolved quickly. Yes. They did have their work cut out for them. Relatively easy fix and it was within our bandwidth so we handled it in an hour, hour and a half. Officials say the Voting Machines are 10 years old and will need to be replaced. They plan to ask for funding in the next budget but for now they say, this system is still efficient and secure. City of oakland wanted to make sure everyone made it out to the polls to vote today. Members of the National Domestic Workers Alliance team funded Childcare Services for moms and dads who wanted to vote but needed someone to watch kids. The providers on site had games and toys to keep children busy while their parents waited in line to vote. One mother says the Service Really makes a difference for some parents. A lot of people will probably put that as an excuse that they didnt have nowhere to leave their children. Its great to have this opportunity where theres someone available to watch over their kids. The Day Care Services were provided in oakland and los angeles. New development is now following that violent protest outside a donald trump rally in san jose last week. Police have identified a number of people involved, four suspects were booked into the santa clara jail. Three on assault charges, one on a charge of refusing to disperse. Protesters attack several Trump Supporters at the rally. At the time, trump criticized the city of san jose for failing to keep his supporters safe. The police chief, eddie garcia, has set up a task force to review video footage of the protest to identify the troublemakers in the crowd. Foggy outside again tonight, we had a big dose of it this morning, pushed well inland, dropped tempter , 15 degrees in the inland pay valleys. Highs in the 70s. Instead of the 90s. And low 100 like we saw last week. The reason is theres a week low pressure to the north of us, inversion or the fog, marine layer, the fog bank if you will has expanded. So now its coming up over the hills. Tomorrow morning, most of the bay area has cloud cover in the form of fog. Temperatures mild right now, or kind of cool where they were last night, a degree or two off. But the real story is this, this lifting of the fog bank pushing it inland, not just for tonight and tomorrow but the next couple days. Fire danger takes a break. Airquality gets a good cleaning. Increasing the winds as well while you drop the temperatures. Tomorrow fog footprint, there it is. 9 00 am, starts to burn back. By lunchtime all the way back to the waters edge. A few high clouds, look at these 70s where there were 80s and 90s a few days ago. Temperatures definitely cooler. 50s around the bay, 70s in the warmest inland valley with a few low 80s showing up in the sacramento valley. A 19yearold man was shot and killed outside of the Bottle Shop Liquor store on spring street in vallejo this afternoon. Skyfox flew over the investigation scene, police have not released the name of the victim. If you have information that could help police make an arrest, they want to hear from you. Oakland man was charged today with a deadly shooting of a San Francisco muni driver. Police say jackson was sitting on his harley outside shooters bar near san leandro when he was shot and killed last friday. They say it was an unprovoked attack by 34yearold sofie kong who is also accused of the whipping and wounding a second person. He allegedly shot at another man and missed. Investigators say they have surveillance tape of the killing and the arrest but the motive for those attacks is still unclear. We do not understand why this gunman did this. Theres no rhyme or reason for it. This is a very cowardly, callous, and coldblooded attack of people that were doing nothing wrong. Jackson had worked as a muni driver for four years. His wife of 18 years and his four children are heartbroken. Prosecutors have charged kong with murder and attempted murder. He could face the Death Penalty if convicted. San jose police will be equipped with body cameras. In a vote held this evening the city Council Voted to approve body cameras for police on patrol. The vote sets aside 5 million to add nearly 1000 body cameras, software and training for officers. San jose will now join other major cities across the country to add Police Body Cameras to their force. Supporters say body cameras provide more transparency and account ability for police. A group of residents was out today protesting against trains carrying crude oil. Venetians for safe and Healthy Community are fighting against a plan by valero to transport crude oil by train. Today they cited a derailment and explosions in oregon that contaminated the Columbia River as more proof that its too dangerous for an urban area. They have been fighting three and half years to keep the city from issuing a permit to valero. Todays protest came ahead of a City Council Meeting and discussion about the hiring of attorneys to defend the citys landuse authority against valero. Election coverage continues, right after the break. Voter turnout in Santa Clara County could be much higher than the last resident of primary. We are here with workers as they tally votes. We will have the latest results in the south bay including a hotly contested congressional seat. Back now to our you decide coverage of the california measure primary and the big races being decided tonight. Right now the top two candidates for congress from the south they are both democrats, mike honda leads only by a thin margin. The numbers right now, very close, this is actually a dead heat, 38 to 38 . 23 of precincts reporting. Ktvus Azenith Smith has more now on this race from the Santa Clara County registrars office, very close tonight. Azenith . Reporter yes. A very close race and these workers will be working 24 7 and until theyre finished, take a look. It is a welloiled machine. Here in Santa Clara County, voter turnout is predicted at 55 tos 85 that is a big increase from the last president ial primary back in 2012. I one of the races we are following as these votes are being counted, the congressional seat, we caught up with a 39yearold ro khanna at his Election Party in santa clara tonight as the results were coming in. Hes optimistic for a rematch, two years ago ro khanna, a virtual unknown democratic challenger, was 20 Percentage Points down during the primary. Then in the general election, that here, he came within four Percentage Points of unseating the 74yearold after an expensive and at times bitter race. He tells us tonight losing has helped him grow the candidates to grow as a candidate. Were in a very good position. I will let the pundits talk about how close but i think anyone looking at these results, exceeded so far, my expectations by far. Theres going to have to be a lot more work done regardless of the outcome right here. We are fighting tooth and nail for every vote and were going to continue to fight every vote until november. Reporter that is mike honda s campaign manager. The congressman is on a plane to washington, dc for a legislative session. At hondas campaign headquarters, they tell us they are focused on winning the general election. Khanna has been hitting honda hard with mailers. In the middle of an ethics investigation for using office funds to support his campaign. He has not served in elected office before, saying he has no record to stand on, honda has served in Congress Since 2001. I spoke to his political analyst, who said if khanna is within 10 Percentage Points and as you can see its a dead, close race, that may signal danger, back out here live you can see at the registrars office, workers are busy counting, im told they will be updating Election Results every 45 minutes on their website. And it is fair to say this will be a very long night. Azenith smith in the south bay, thank you. Voters in all nine bay area counties voted on a measure that is meant to restore bay wetlands, measure aa would add a 12 annual parcel tax for 20 years. It would raise 25 million to restore marshes and improve flood protection. It needs a two thirds vote to pass. Right now voters saying yes at 68 , 32 saying no. Going back now to democratic president ial primary Hillary Clinton still holds a big lead in california over Bernie Sanders, 25 of the precincts are now reporting Hillary Clinton has 61 of the vote, Bernie Sanders only 38 . You recall all the polls had this race neck and neck but right now, not looking that way. Sanders way behind, Hillary Clinton with 25 of the vote being reported. A big lead right now. Lets go back over to ktvus ross palombo and our panel of analysts tonight. That lead appears to be shrinking. Most of the night it has been over 30. Right now were down to 23 points. What do you think . Do you think the numbers are going to change . Only a third of the vote in. So far theyve held all night. Since the first came in. A 30 gap, if it holds all night, this is over performance by Hillary Clinton. What do you think . No way back . Not at this point. Youve got so many votes in already. I dont see how he makes up ground. Its a trend and Hillary Clinton is already speaking tonight in new jersey, she tried to seize the moment. Now has the democratic receptive nominee, she spoke of history, it was a big speech, lets listen in for a moment. [ cheers and applause ] there are still ceilings to break for women and men, for all of us but dont let anyone tell you that great things cant happen in america. Barriers can come down. Justice and equality can win. Our history has moved in that direction slowly at times, but unmistakably thanks to generations of americans who refused to give up or back down. Now you are writing a new chapter of that story. This campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings, no limits on any of us and this is our moment. To come together. Such an interesting speech tonight from Hillary Clinton. Was it her moment . Did she take it . For the first time we saw Hillary Clinton unscripted it appears, she was emotional, she was powerful, interestingly enough, eight years ago to the day when she made that speech when she conceded to barack obama she was emotional again. Remember that . The cracks in the glass ceiling. Eight years later shes back to being emotional. I thought it was an excellent speech. Weve watched Hillary Clinton dozens of times. I really think this was an a speech out of Hillary Clinton. Was it enough to change the course of her trajectory . Her trajectory when it comes to how she is campaigning. Shes had some recent setbacks. But overall, she has run a good companion overall. And if she maintains and continues to learn the lessons from the bernie contest and applies them, shell be fine. She made mistakes in 2008 when she thought name recognition would be bigticket people, the names would carry them but you had to have a ground game. You heard her say tonight, we need volunteers in all 50 states. As you said, all night, this is a 50 state campaign. Not a very strong tonight. The best weve seen her in months. Bernie sanders will be speaking momentarily. By the way were keeping an eye on that for you. Lets talk briefly about the 17th congressional race. If we can listen to the numbers, mike honda, ro khanna, neck and neck, a virtual rematch of what we saw two years ago when honda only squeaked by with a 3. 5 , 5000 votes. What do you think this time around . Looking strong tonight. is he going to take it . Well see, but you have an incumbent that the been there for a very long time and then you have this guy who was there two years ago. Fought it out, walked and worked like crazy. Were seeing one of these classic rematches. With hillary and Kamala Harris making history, California Democratic voters in the mood to make history . This would also be history. What do you think push them over the top . President obama did not endorse mike honda. Do you think that made the difference . I dont think so. He did before and then he declined to do it this time. I think people know these two candidates in that district very well. Absolutely. Three years of campaigning. So i think a lot of the votes were sealed in coming into the contest. Im not sure the president had a lot to do with changing minds. Interesting to see how ro khanna does. He practices intellectual property, so thats certainly relevant to the Silicon Valley area. Neck and neck, a close one to watch. Keeping an eye on this one, waiting for Bernie Sanders, for now back to frank and julie. Bernie sanders and a lot more numbers to come in tonight, thank you, german. Still tracking temperatures out there, its cool, cloudy, a little drizzly at times, ill let you know what to expect. And of course the allimportant bay area weekend. Ambulance taken on a wild pursuit. Thats not fair, he should give you your rollerblades back. And, shes back. Storm coming . A very dangerous cheese storm. Presenting the American Express blue cash everyday card with cash back on this. Mouth toys. That really takes me back. Cash back on this. Baloney and medical gauze. And even this. Who said shrimmpppppppppppp . Ahhh, shrimp. The lobsters little brother. Great choice. Ughhhhhh, im so shrimp rich. All with no annual fee. Cash back on purchases. Backed by the service and security of American Express. Police in San Francisco arrested a woman who they say stolen ambulance and then crashed into a guardrail. [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] thank you [ cheers and applause ] let me let me thank let me thank [ chanting ] let me thank [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] oh let me thank, let me thank all of you. Let me thank all of you for being here tonight. [ cheers and applause ] and let me thank all of you for being part of the political revolution. [ cheers and applause ] i especially want to thank the tens of thousands of volunteers here in the state of california. [ cheers and applause ] and i want to thank the people of california for their incredible hospitality. [ cheers and applause ] it has been one of the most moving moments of my life, to be out throughout the state in beautiful evening and seeing thousands and thousands of people coming out. [ cheers and applause ] people who are prepared to stand up and fight for real change in this country. [ cheers and applause ] all of you know, all of you know that when we began this campaign a little bit over a year ago, we were considered to be a fringe campaign. [ booing ] but over the last year, i think that has changed just a little bit. [ cheers and applause ] by the end of tonight, well have won, i believe, 22 state primaries and caucuses. [ cheers and applause ]. We will have received well over 10 million votes. [ cheers and applause ] and what is most extraordinary to me is the fact that in virtually every single state, we have won by big numbers, the votes of young people. [ cheers and applause ] young people understand that they are the future of america, and they intend to help shape that future. [ cheers and applause ] and i am enormously optimistic about the future of our country, when so many young people have a come on board and understand that our vision, a vision of social justice, economic justice, [ cheers and applause ] Racial Justice [ cheers and applause ] and Environmental Justice [ cheers and applause ] must be the future of america. Our vision will be the future of america [ cheers and applause ] our campaign, from day one, has understood some very basic points. And that is first, we will not allow rightwing republicans to control our government. [ cheers and applause ] and that is especially true with donald trump as the republican candidate. [ booing ] the American People, in my view, will never support a candidate whose major theme is bigotry. [ cheers and applause ] who is so who insults mexicans. [ booing ] who insults muslims and women. [ booing ] and africanamericans. [ booing ] we will not allow donald trump to become president of the United States. [ cheering ] but we understand that our mission is more than just defeating trump. It is transforming our country. [ cheers and applause ] the vast majority of the American People know that it is not acceptable that the top one 10th of 1 owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 . Were going to change that. [ cheers and applause ] and when millions of americans are working longer hours for lower wages, we will not allow 57 of all the new income to go to the top 1 . And we will end a corrupt Campaign Finance system. [ cheers and applause ] democracy is not about billionaires buying elections. [ cheers and applause ] and we will end a broken criminal justice system. [ cheers and applause ] and we will break up the major banks on wall street. [ cheers and applause ] and we will join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee healthcare for all people as a right. [ cheers and applause ] and we will bring about real Immigration Reform and a path towards citizenship. [ cheers and applause ] [ chanting ] and we will, and we will tell the billionaire class in Corporate America that they will start paying their fair share of taxes. [ cheers and applause ] and what we understand and what every one of us has always understood is that real change never occurs from the top on down. Always from the bottom on up.
