And the support is pouring in for a former 49er dwight clark following his announcement that hes been diagnosed with als or lou gehrigs disease. Clark is 60 years old and made that announcement yesterday. He said he started having weakness in his left hand a week and a half ago. Now he says the same weakness affects his right hand, lower back, and right leg. He cant walk long distances and he cant do simple things like button his shirt. He says it is hard to lift anything over 30 pounds. Doctors say the disease progresses overtime and the average Life Expectancy is three to five years because unfortunately there is no cure. It affects the nerves and the brain and the spinal cord, causing progressive painless weakness. Niner fans, of course, they remember clark for this. The catch. That incredible play that sent the team to the super bowl back in january of 1982. And i dont know how many times where she look the at that catch. Sports director mark ibanez joins us now. The big question, i dont think anyone could answer those hits on the football field tributing to what they know it will happen. The top of your mind, follow their career. And it is unfortunate, but it looks like a case of football glory colliding head on. With gruesome reality. If you take a look back at their nineyear nfl career, we want to show you some of the video. Now dwight, he played wide receiver, of course in the glory years of the 49ers. And usually that is not a position for you that you dont always equate with the constant pounding of the linebackers, even the quarterback. Now yet you could imagine the longterm damage just from a possibility reached by these particular hits. The recent studies would show nfl players are now four times more likely to be stricken with neurodegenerative diseases like als. More studies are in the works and they want to better understand how head injuries may trigger this and result in related injuries. These kinds of damages can be done. Take a look at this quick clip of dwight clark talking about some of the physical damage he sustained early on in his career. Hes got the speed and i dont. We usually send freddie deep and i go across the middle to try to mix things up. Dwight clark back in the early 80s. You know, saying he was the guy that went over the middle and did the heavy lifting if you will, catching the tough passes in traffic and, you know, ive known dwight for more than 35 years now. I know one thing about his spirit and the way he attacks life. He will not be one of those people wanting to throw a pity party. After the 1984 super bowl. He was just, you know, he had that boylike enthusiasm. He came back to me and said i want a big ring for winning this super bowl. Throughout his career in broadcasting after his nfl career, fans would just approach him. He was the most approachable guy you would ever want and he never got tired of talking about the catch in particular, but he was just a football fanatic. He loved to talk about football. You know, what was wrong with the 49ers and how it could be fixed. You know, like i say he will not feel sorry for himself and im sure he wouldnt want anyone to either. You know sometimes players are one way or just people are one way and in front of the camera. As soon as it is off theyre another person. Dwight clark was the same person both in front of and behind the camera. Oh yeah, literally there are thousands of people that would attest to that. Very approachable. He saw fans come up to him and wanted to rehash the catch and his entire career and he always acted like it was the first time he ever told the story. Yes, and he has five super bowl rings. I mean people forget. He was in management too with the 49ers. He went on to be a general manager of the cleveland browns. But he never did it in kind of a bragging way. it was like can you believe this happened to me . An excitement. Yeah, he wasnt a highly touted player coming out of college. He hooked on and he was kissed by the fate if you will and he loved every moment of it. Like i say dont be sorry for him because he wont feel sorry for himself. We wish him all the best and his family and those prayers and wishes, he deserves it. Yes, hes a hero. Mark, thank you. The disease dwight clark is battling was also at the center of an a enormously popular social media fundraising drive three years ago. It was nearly impossible to go online without seeing someone get dunk with a bucket of ice. The ice bucket challenge ended up raising an estimated 115 million for als. Researchers say that money helped pay for a Ground Breaking discovery. Scientists were able to identify the gene that causes als. Still ahead tonight.
