The play structure was badly burned. You can see its now roped off with caution tape. Park officials dont know when it will reopen because they dont know how they will get the money to replace it. Families, especially children visiting the koret playground shocked and baffled to see this, rides melted, bridges charred in the hands of vandals. I feel disappointed because this is one of my favorite parts of the park. Kind of sad really. Who would do that . Reporter many children unsure who did this. Many traveling from out of the area their first time at the park. Theres no reason to vandalize a kids park. Its pretty innocent. Its definitely disturbing. I mean where im from we dont see many parks vandalized. Reporter Authorities Say the fire was reported at 12 30 in the morning. Fire crews responded and immediately put it out. The cause is still under investigation. No one was injured. On an annual basis we usually see things like broken glass, graffiti, but this is a pretty rare occurrence. Reporter the San Francisco recreation and Parks Department has no idea who is responsible. The last time any of the parks were monitored. I just think its weird someone would think to do it at a playground of all places, you know . This is where small kids come to be safe and play with other kids. Reporter park Officials Say it will need to be replaced based on their experience of rehabbing playgrounds. They estimate it will cost 1 million originally opened in 1888. The playground reopened in 2007 after 3 million renovations. Well, 1 million, thats not an expensive thing. Reporter despite the high cost to replace it, visitors hope it will happen soon. A lot of things happen that they dont need to have it happen and it does not need to happen. And also you need to do it because it had is a wonderful Gathering Place for children. Reporter we are told there are no security cameras in this area. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco fire department. They also have extra patrols in this area in light of what happened. Frank, i want to mention we ran into a San Francisco Police Officer just a couple of minutes ago also disappointed in this saying this is a very peaceful park. Yeah, it is a head shaker.
