it was a narrow victory for him given the size and the shape of that district. and that would be his last race for public office. after hedid get re-elected in 2006 he announced he would retire and he wouldn't run again. he said it was time for him to take on new challenges. and so instead of running for reelection the next time around in 2008 he endorsed a new republican to take his seat, a guy named chris lee. and chris lee seemed like a real up and comer in the republican party. this was a really republican district. chris lee was a vocal anti-gay, anti-abortion republican, a married family values kind of guy who really campaigned on that as one of the reasons he should be in congress. he voted against the repeal of don't ask don't teleabout gay people serving openly in the military. he voted against the fair pay act for women getting equal pay. but even though chris lee was this up-and-coming conservative
