MSNBCW All In With Chris Hayes February 10, 2015

It does not make sense to sour the negotiations a month or two before theyre about to be completed. Tonight, the growing movement to delay Benjamin Netanyahus speech to congress. Plus shades of George Wallace as a constitutional crisis royals alabama. And the plaintiff behind a Supreme Court case that could destroy obama care. Who also calls the president the antichrist. A shocking twist to im going to let you finish 2. 0. He should given this war it beyonce. And tandem computers. The 80s called, they want their store back. What the bankruptcy means for brick and Mortar Stores everywhere. Good evening from new york. Im chris hayes, the brewing conflict between president obama and Benjamin Netanyahu reached a whole new level today with the leaders taking shots at each other in public from different sides of the globe. At a press conference with german chancellor, president obama was asked about the controversy over netanyahus march 3rd address before a joint session of congress that seemed to lobby against a nuclear deal with iran. The speech planned with john boehner has been criticized, and politicizing u. S. israeli relations. President obama threw shade in netanyahus direction. We have a practice of not meeting with leaders right before their elections, two weeks before their elections. As much as i love angela, if she was two weeks away from an election, she would not have received an invitation to the white house, and i suspect she would not have asked for one. I suspect she wouldnt have asked for one. Minutes after the president made those comments netanyahu sent out a series of tweets reaffirming he is going ahead with the speech. That rational points to the fundamental conflict at heart of this very public and unprecedented diplomatic flap. Its not about their personalities or whether or not it violated protocol. It call comes down to a very real substantive disagreement of relations. If president obama gets a deal on Irans Nuclear program, it would be the most monumental achievement since the camp david accords. It could cement his Foreign Policy. And reshaping the political dynamics of the entire middle east. At his president conference today, the president said negotiations are coming down to the wire and is now a question of irans political will. At this juncture, i dont see a further extension being useful if they have not agreed to the basic formulation and the bottom line that the world requires to have confidence theyre not pursuing a nuclear weapon. We now know enough that the issues are no longer technical. The issues now are does iran have the political will and the desire to get a deal done . At the same time, the isreali Prime Minister seems to think that any deal that comes out of a deal with iran will be a bad one. He long sounded the alarm about the threat. They have voiced concerns that the new landscape after the deal would be an uncomfortable place. For the state of israel. His attempt to run around president obama is not. One prominent columnist wrote obama is wrong and youre right, but if there is any chance of bumping him from his position, then youre making every possible mistake and turning him into an adversary. How many clues do you need to understand you should change direction. 47 verse 34 say he should go ahead with it. Many prominent Jewish Americans think the space is a bad idea too. Like abe foxman. Isreali diplomats have been warning that israels friends in the west would be harmed and threaten to cut ties. Democrats who favor new sanctions decided to give the president another two months to reach a deal. Now a growing number of democrats are planning to skip netanyahus speech all together. Inshrewding some members of the prominent black caucus. Joining me now is steve cohen who is asking to postpone netanyahus speech until after israeli elections. Why have you signed on to this letter . What do you want the speaker to do . I dont think we should have a person up for election in two weeks and a person being used politically to attack the president s position on negotiations with iran that are so important. I would like the speaker to put the speech off until after the latter of the two circumstances so the president yettiana hugh can have a dialogue that is not considered political and isnt political. Right now it is turned into a political theater. A few weeks ago there was an attempt to pass a bill that would revoke rowe v. Wade. It was during time there was a pro life crowd marching on the passage of not the passage but the declaration of roe v wade. And it was done for political theater. This is political theater too and the United States house of representatives should not be used for political theater. There is so many people including myself who are strong supporters of israel who dont think this is good for israel. Israel needs to be close to the United States and close to the president for its protection and its future. Let me ask you this. How many people, when push comes to shove of the 435 members of the house, and the 100 senators, how many people are going to make good on a threat not to show up . It seems to me there is a game of chicken being played by netanyahu being played here saying, im going to show up, and i care you not to come. To some extent, that is going on, and i think by going, and having to determine what my position should be on that day, but by going youre being assured by speaker boehner. Boehner should havent invited netanyahu. Netanyahu should have understood that let me interrupt, from all of the reporting we have seen, this was not sprung on Prime Minister netanyahu, and he understands the circumstances under which he is coming to the country. Im not suggesting they didnt each have mutual motives, and there are mutual motives. Speaking before a congressman with congressman standing up and applauding will probably help netanyahu in his election, and it helps boehner with republicans appeal to people supportive of israel. Particularly the apek pac pac crowd meeting that week. It is like which ever crowd comes to washington, the pro life crowd, january, or apac in march, congress is like a Television Studio to help promote the republican tide of that group. We should be legislating, not interjecting politics and Foreign Policy the president controls Foreign Policy, if these negotiations dont work, if there is not an agreement, there is going to be war. There will be bombings in iran. And if israel does that, which most likely they would do, they need the United States help or support. Were their strongest allies, and you dont cause problems with the president who controls the military at a time like this. I think this whole series of events is hurting israel and putting them in a bad position. It is just not good. Congressman, we will eagerly await your decision if it is not postponed and we will check back with you. Thank you very much. As president obama pursues a nuclear deal, his critics continue to call for increased military engagement on all fronts and this has been one of the central dynamics of the president s second term. The hawks condemn him for standing by while the world burns. President obama has shown a profound reluctant in getting involved. Although, lets be clear, that reluctance could give way in the face of us stained pressure. Just ask the 3,000 troops in iraq, and the pilots flying Bombing Missions against isis. In an exclusive interview, the president explained his Foreign Policy striking a balance between realism an idealism. The goal of any good Foreign Policy is the aspirations and ideals but also recognize the world as it is where it is and figure out, how do you attack to the point where things are better than they were before. It doesnt mean perfect, it just means better. That was one part of an indepth interview. He got philosophical about his pry forts country and approach to governing. The two people conducted that interview are joining me now. Let me start with you, matt. You did the Foreign Policy stuff, and you asked him about sort of what grand theory is here. He gets attacked a lot for essentially what his critics view as an ad hoc approach. What do you think you learned . Were you satisfied with his answer there is a coherent vision there . I think one of the most coherent things that guides the president is a fundamentally optimistic belief that in a lot of ways, the big trends in the world are positive ones. What is important for him, the leader of the most powerful influential country on earth, is to be overreact and not mess things up. He emphasized that violence is down around the world. Poverty is down. What lands on his desk are the crisis of the day, the crisis of the moment. That excessive focus on crises and military focus can distract attention from the dynamics that are more optimistic and a risk that the United States will do too much, go to far, and expend its strength. In some ways, i think the way he views the domestic sphere, on the inequality front, he basically, it seemed to me, he says look, we can get a Better Business cycle going. We can hopefully get job growth and wage growth and stuff like that. The longterm trends were here before i was here and it will take a long time to undo. Absolutely. What is important is the degree of control he has over the two dimensions. When he talks about inequality, he talks about pretax and posttax. He talks about how in the past more was done before taxes. More was done at the corporate level. More done in the culture. It was considered unseemly to have the ceo pay that you have now. There was not as much of a need for the government to get involved, but it is important for the government to use redistribution to alter the simple tax and transfer dynamics to reduce inequality and alter things like shareholder representation and to alter the distribution of prepay tax. It is where he feels the u. S. Is capable around the world and he is much more cautious about the idea that we can have unintended consequences. And to get specific outcomes is weaker than Many Americans in washington would like it to be. Matt, i want you to sort of talk about that. It is one level, it always strikes me, here is someone that so often, come sit at this desk, and another saying you must do something, send arms to the rebels, intervene in syria, and the president is saying no, no, no. At same time there are 3,000 servicemen and women in iraq right now. Were running bombing raids and were at war against isis. We are getting authorization to use military force. I mean, my question is is that reluctance just for show . You know, i dont think it is for show. When we spoke about isis, he says i could send 2,000 troops. That is a reminder there is a long way to go from 3,000 to what is sort of all in on iraq like that. He says he doesnt want to do it because he doesnt think it will work. He thinks you can have Ground Forces in there and keep a lid on problems, but they could never leave. He doesnt want to overcommit to the situation. At the same time i think it is difficult for him politically because he doesnt want to draw a bright line against getting involved. It would be simpler or satisfying for people to wash our hands of some situations, but he feels the need to be involved to some extent, and to try to do what he thinks he has to without getting sucked as far in as he might go. The r paradox of the United States military is it is the mightiest military in the world. It can do a lot, but it really cant do everything. We cant be in ukraine, syria, iran, and every place simultaneously. You have to pick what you do and it winds up being difficult to communicate and difficult to rally supporters behind, but there is a logic to it. Part of the story is the white house has made an effort to go to new venues. They are doing an interview on buzz feed, fox, your thing. There is an Interesting Exchange you had about polarization. He thinks part of what is polarizing people is the media itself. Are you sold on his understanding of what is driving polarization . I dont think there is any doubt that the media is polarizing people. I dont think there is any doubt at all. I think there are parts of his description that i am skeptical off. He assigns gerrymandering a higher weight than i would. I think there is some role in polarization. But not as big as folks intuitively believe. The place where i think i part with the president s understanding of the situation is i think he is fundamentally more hopeful about it than i am. Once we sort aggressively into parties, we can reinforce those party identities. Those have become very powerful. I spoke to him about the way they have become important in racial identity too. Back in the 90s, republicans and democrats found no difference if what they thought about the o. J. Simpson verdict. Now, you see huge differences in republicans and democrats on the zimmerman verdict. I think polarization is a trend that will keep continuing and we need to figure out ways to governor amidst it. I think there are ways for a president to get around polarization and speak to a nonpolarized medium in the electorate. He needs to speak to things like his work on youtube, between two firms, some of the more nontraditional efforts he has made. Thanks a lot. Thank you. Here is a quick preview from Mike Huckabee speaking this morning about which religious groups get more support from president obama. Everything he does is against what christians stand for, and hes against the jews in israel. The people who know they will have his undying, unfailing support, is the Muslim Community. It doesnt matter if it is the more radical Muslim Community or recent Muslim Community. I assure you that a beheading is worse than a sunburn. Wait until he hits the campaign train. This morning for the First Time Ever in the state of alabama, samesex couples got married legally. Legally sienksed sanctioned by a court. Two women were the first in montgomery county. Getting their marriage license at the probate office. Some major counties were ready by forms from the department of health. Jefferson county judge allen king made it clear yesterday he is prepared to go forward. We usually have one window open. We will plan to have two windows open. Well be ready with the forms and multiple windows open and it will be like, well just whatever happens in jefferson county, we will be ready. In birmingham, a judge asked for a picture with the newlyweds in some ways this is remarkable in the sense that 36 states already sanctioned samesex marriage and alabama became the 37th. But in other ways the path to this was more contentious and hard fought thanks to a stubborn tradition of thumbing their nose at the federal government. It started a little more than two weeks ago. A federal judge, struck down alabama ban on samesex marriage. A part of alabamas state constitution. The same judge agreed to put her own ruling on hold for 14 days for appeal. The Alabama Attorney general appealed it. But they denied the request for a stay. So the original federal court set to expire there will be a hold on marriage licenses starting today. Not so fast said chief justice roy morrill. That may ring a bell. He refused to remove his ten commandments. But he made a come back. If you were wondering what happened to that guy, the answer is that he is currently serving at chief justice. Of the alabama Supreme Court. Yesterday in that role you will never guess what judge moore did. Instructed pro bait judges to ignore the federal ruling on gay marriage and stick to what he said is the alabama constitution. The Supreme Court in 72 vote refused to extend that hold. So you have the u. S. Supreme court refusing to stop gay marriage in alabama, and they now have a choice. Do they follow the lead of the heist court in the nation and issue licenses or listen to judge roy moore and refuse . They basically told roy moore that were going to go to the highest court in the land and grant those licenses. Samesex marriages began today. And alabama is the 37th state to do so. But, and a big but, about a of alabamas county courts
