Located in south america just off the caribbean in africa, just off the caribbean and from africa. Parts of the world that presumably, according to the president of the United States, you will find shithole countries from which the United States should not accept immigrants. The breaking news out of washington, d. C. Should come as no surprise to any american but should be embarrassing to every american. This afternoon the man who was elevated to the presidency of the United States, trump, who was sued by the Nixon Administration in the 1970s for refusing to rent apartments to africanamericans, who rose to political prominence by questioning whether the first black president was really an american, who kicked off his campaign by calling mexicans rapists, and who as president said that there were good people among the nazis who marched in charlottesville, and who killed a woman by ramming her with their car. That man, donald trump, during a meeting in the oval office, inside the white house, did the leastsurprising thing of his presidency today. Both nbc news, which cites a democratic aide, and washington post, which broke the story and has two sources report trump became frustrated when lawmakers proposed reinstating protections for immigrants from haiti and from amp can countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal. The post reports el salvador was also among the nations mentioned. The Trump Administration had moved in recent months to end such protections after lawmakers made their proposal the post reported trump said, why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here . Adding the u. S. Should have more people from places like norway. Why do we need more haitians, citing people familiar with the meeting, take them out. Later the white house didnt even pretend trump didnt say it. Its response to the reports reads in part, certain washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American People. It should not surprise you at this point this is reportedly not the first time donald trump has uttered these kinds of comments. During a discussion on immigration in december the New York Times reported that trump slurred haitians saying they all have aids. And that once nigerians, whose country of 186 Million People has lots and lots and lots of big cities, once they had seen the shiny, gleaming United States theyd never go back to their huts in africa. Remember trumps comments are not just idle talk. The white house statement confirms that it is the position of the president of the United States in an Oval Office Meeting with top elected officials working out a deal on our immigration policy that we should discriminate about who can come to america, based on the color of their skin and their nationality. Less people from sholes, more people from norway. Joining me to discuss immigration and respond to the president s comments, one republican and one democratic congressman, larger marshall, republican of kansas, and congressman Luis Gutierrez, democrat of illinois. Congressman, what is your response to Donald Trumps statement that countries in parts of the world where my parents are from, by the way, are shole countries . Joy, thanks for asking me. I think that those comments, if true as reported, are wildly inappropriate and thats certainly not where i stand. My family have been so fortunate, weve done mission work in haiti, in guatemala, in Central America in africa. Ive had nothing but great relationships with those people and blessed to be with them. And so, you know, do you think then in that case, and thank you for saying that, do you think that donald trump should apologize . Do you condemn the comments . I condemn the comment, if its reported as true. I condemn it, i dont agree with it at all. I would hope that President Trump would reach out to those people. Those certainly are not what his actions are. I think quickly, were so close to getting a daca deal done. We need to finish the job. Were so close. I just hope this doesnt get us off track. But youre saying that those are not his actions, those are only his words. But trumps actions have pretty much matched his words. He has repeatedly disparaged haiti. You said your familys done mission wark work there. He rescinded protective temporary status for haitians. Tomorrows the anniversary of the 2010 devastating earthquake that sent many haitian migrants here. He rescinded that tps. You say those are his words, not his policies. But on every policy that comes to people of color, whether el salvador ens or haitians, donald trump is rejecting people, deporting people, saying they shouldnt be here. Those are his policies. After i was in haiti after one of these huge earthquakes, absolutely devastating, i couldnt believe what i saw. I think what we have is a president whos trying to push people to solve problems. I think it was genius to take people going in different directions, the house, the senate, republican, democrats, going in different directions. It was genius to put them together in front of the tv cameras and say, lets solve this problem for daca kids. Every group, theres a whole lot of different issues. We need to get daca solved, we need border security. If we can get border security, we can get daca solved. Were this close. There are lots of other immigrations we need to solve. We need to tone down the rhetoric a little bit. Miss pelosi maybe said a couple things she shouldnt have said as well wait a minute, its the president of the United States thats characterizing whole parts of the world as being comprised of shole countries. The president of mexico, former president of mexico, vicente fox, had choice words for donald trump. And donald trump wants to deport millions and millions of people to mexico. And on the daca issue, some of the very countries that these daca kids parents came there are the ones hes characterizing the way he did today. Well, i think ive clearly said that i disagree with those reported comments. That theyre extremely inappropriate. And i cant change any of that. But what i can do is stay focused on fixing daca and moving on to other immigration, like the ag worker visa programs we have across the country. Why should democrats sit down across the table and try to work out immigration policy with a president who else spouses racist views, quite frankly, about countries that are mostly populated by people of color . I guess i would answer your question with a question. Why would the democrats hold the daca kids hostage over everything . Its not the Democrats Holding them hostage do they really want to fix this daca was a president ial directive, an executive order. Donald trump did not have to rescind it. He rescinded it. Democrats are not holding anyone hostage, they have no power in washington, it is Donald Trump Holding those kids hostage. I respectfully disagree. Executive order. Do the democrats have the ability to extend those kids stay . Who is responsible for daca . Was daca an executive order or on law passed by dress . Daca was an executive order. Then who is responsible for either keeping that order or rescinding isnt it. President trump correct, donald trump. President trump gave us a chance to solve the problem. By rescinding daca. He gave us six months to solve the problem. It was a brilliant it was brilliant to rescind daca . Okay, it was brilliant to rescind daca. No, gas brilliant for him to give congress the chance to solve the problem. Thats what were supposed to do, were supposed to legislate. Were supposed to solve the problems. The president s supposed to enforce the law of the land, not make up his own laws. I see. So are you proud of donald trump as president . Are you proud to have him as your president . Im absolutely stand beside donald trump, his policies. I think hes moved this country in an incredibly positive direction. Our economy, three quarters in a row that was the same under president obama. Im assuming youre proud of president obama, because the economy whats changed. Are you proud of wait he conducts himself as president . I stand beside donald trump and his policies. I dont agree with everything he says or tweets. Do you think a president of the United States should divide the country . There are statements that staffers, according to cnns Kaitlin Collins, staffers inside the white house arent that worried about trumps shole remark, some predict it will resonate with his base, not ill yep nate it, like his attacks on nfl players who kneel during the national anthem. Do you think that is appropriate for the president of the United States to perhaps intentionally divide the country by saying things he thinks will appeal to racists among his followers . I disagree with the whole premise of your question. Really . I see that staff together sounds like the staff says this is good for the country to say things like this because certain parts of his base will like the idea of calling majority nonwhite countries shole countries. They think that will relevance nail with his base. Thats your base too, right . Youre a republican. Im not sure we dont want to argue about who my base and is who Donald Trumps base is its the same base, republican voters. Certainly were both republicans do you think your base would have approved of these remarks and would you do you think your voters today, your constituents, do you think theyre proud tonight of this president and the way he talks about the kind of countries that the statue of Liberty States have given us their tired and poor, yearning to breathe free . Do you think your constituents will be proud of these remarks tonight . I think the people of kansas would probably agree with me that these are inappropriate country, whether its daca we have 20,000 open jobs in kansas alone. We have 5 million open jobs across this country. What are we going to do to fix the immigration rules so that people that want to live the american dream, people that want to contribute to society, people that cant to work, have an opportunity to do that same thing my grandfather did when he came to this country. My last question, and thank you for staying with us, do you think the people who are emigrating from haiti or el salvador should be free to come fill some of those jobs that are open in kansas . They should never get in front of anybody else, i think anybody that wants to do this the right way, to come across theyre already here. Here on temporary protected status, here on daca. Should those young people be allowed to come to kansas and fill those jobs . I think as long as they have a legal status, they have absolutely a right to come here, as long as they have the legal status. Anyone that wants to work that has a legal status should have that opportunity to work. So as long as they have a legal status, im okay with that. We have open jobs. Bring us your tired, your poor. The Republican Party embraces people. The biggest economic challenge this countrys going to have in the next ten years is a skilled workforce. One of those skills is the ability to work hard. Roger marshall, congressman roger marshall, thank you very much, appreciate you joining me. Thank you, joy, have a great night. Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez of illinois. Mia love, Republican Congress from utah, said the president s comments are unkind, divisive, el elitist, and fly in the face of our nations values. My parents came from one of those countries, took an oath of allegiance to it, took on the responsibilities. The president must apologize to both the mesh people and the nations he so wantonly maligned. Her parents came from haiti. Your comment, sir . First of all, i know why i like mia. Im happy she expressed that. But let me just say that we couldnt we cannot become so hardened during the presidency of donald trump that were not shocked. And that were not hurt. And that this isnt repugnant to us. And it isnt painful. Because it certainly is to me. So if you were born in 1953 as i was, you grew up in a land where separate but equal was the law of the land. Where i was not and people of color werent i love the america that weve grown into. A pickup more diverse america, an american that is much more giving and much more accepting. I love the america that my grandson lucito lives in. He doesnt have to deal with all of the racism and all of the prejudice and the bigotry that i felt personally as a youth in this country and that so many others. And so much was sacrificed, joy. It was sacrifice. People died so that we wouldnt have these kind of repugnant comments. Let me say what the president said today, he keeps telling us, and we just heard my colleague say how brilliant and genius. No, this is ignorance. This is ignorance to speak in such vile, racist terms. So the varnish and the paint has been stripped away from donald trump. And i know we feel it has been in the past. But god, isnt today is going to be a very memorial day. And thats saying a lot in the donald trump presidency. Because we now know that we have in the white house someone who could lead the ku klux klan in the United States of america. Somebody who could be the leader of the neonazi, just his words. Sadly, the horror show that was put on in front of those congressmen today is going to be the matinee show unfortunately for millions of americans who agree with this president. What do you make of the information from cnns Kaitlin Collins whos reporting that staffers, white house staffers, are not concerned about the remarks because they think that it will resonate with his base, not alienate his base, the same way his attacks on black nfl players did . Pretty remarkable stuff, what do you make of that . Wow. Number one, this is what happens when you surround yourself with bannon and you surround yourself with miller and you surround yourself with people who have used bigotry and discrimination and division as political tools. What are you to expect . That means thats what the president is surrounding himself with. And you know what i learned . Id like to hear from mr. Kelley, the chief of staff. They keep telling us, the general is there. Well, mr. General, speak up. Speak up for the men and women of the armed forces. Of different colors and different races and different nationalities who all bleed the same color. Who have served under your command. And continue to serve and protect. And let me just say, joy, can you imagine any other job in which the ceo, right, could Say Something and isnt summarily fired from his job . Can you think of any employee walking into any institution in america and saying these kind of deplorable things and not being fired . And thats why i insist that we need to continue to look at the embalance of this president. And the other day he put on a show for us. Right. The other thing, joy, lets remember that these were democrats and republicans responding to him and saying, okay, were going to give you this is what they said at the meeting, they said, were going to give you money for your wall. I hope the American Public understands that they offered the president 1. 8 million for the wall today. They offered the president to stop the ability of d. R. E. A. M. Ers to apply for green cards for their parents. They said that today. They said, okay, were going to eliminate the diversity program. But were going to give it. And thats where it came in. They said, were going to take the 50,000 visas that you say is a lottery and were going to attribute those visas to those from haiti and those from africa and those from honduras, were going to give them at 25,000 a year so they can stay in this country. The poorest country in the world, the two poorest countries in this hemisphere, they compete, honduras and haiti. Were going to send people back from the richest nation in the world . Shame on donald trump. This is a racist remark and we need to call it for what it was. Well said, congressman Luis Gutierrez, thank you very much. Thank you for being here. Joining me, msnbc political analyst Jason Johnson the root, former senator barbara boxer, democrat of california. Jason, a couple more responses from members of congress to what donald trump said. Ileana russ lateen, she said the president calling haiti an shole country ignores the contributions thousands of haitians have made to this country. Cbc chairman cedric rich man of louisiana, whose population largely was drawn from haiti over overthrowing the napoleonic government, President Trumps comments are another indication of his racially ignorant views. It reinforces concerns we hear every day that make America Great again is code for make America White again. Weve been saying this a long time. The president is a white supremacist. We heard in charlottesville. Our president is a terrorist sympathizer. Our president is a clear and present danger to nonwhite people in america. Its that simple. Theres no reason to pretend thats not whats going on. Whats important is not just how his heart feels. Ive never cared about that and thats not whats important. This manifest in policy, this manifest in judicial policy, this manifest ins in immigration policy, this manifests in how this administration has dealt with american citizens this puerto rico who are dying because they dont consider them to be real americans. Unless the Democratic Party realizes that this man is an enemy to nonwhite people in america, and this is not an exaggeration. Everything in his rhetoric and policy has said so. We will be in danger as a sof rant nation. We have to recognize that this president has made it abundantly clear since he got into office he does not want to make a space for nonwhite people to participate. Yes, there are some people who are not white w
