And it has also become whether it is civil aircraft or over the last four or five years, these four sectors have contributed 20 billion to the relationship between india and the u. S. A lot of this is due to the policies and the diligence of President Trump. Im fully confident that in the years to come this will further grow. As far as bilateral trade is concerned, our summit has had very positive discussions. President trump and i, we have both agreed that our that the understanding coming to these terms will take it forward to give it a we are also we also agreed to initiate negotiation for a bigger deal. We are confident that this deal will result in our mutual interests. Friends, cooperation between india and the u. S. At the global level is founded on our common Democratic Values. Especially in the indopacific region and others. Both of our countries agree on the importance of sustainable and transparency in the development of connectivity infrastructure across the world. A mutual interest for both of us. President trump has played an historic role in strengthening our relationship. Once again, i wish to express my heartfelt thanks to President Trump for coming here and taking u. S. Relations to new heights. Thank you. Well, thank you very much. And Prime Minister modi, this has been a very special visit. Unforgettable, extraordinary. What can you say . Very, very wonderful to be with you. Thank you very much. And melania and i have been awed by the majesty of india and the exceptional kindness and generosity of the indian people. Well always remember the magnificent welcome the citizens of your home state showed us upon arrival. It was a profound expression of strength and of real love. Really, it was love, and i think everybody saw that, everybody witne witnessed that for themselves. The first lady and i also reflected on the memory of Mahatma Gandhi at his ashram. This morning in delhi, we laid a wreath in his honor. We visited one of your countrys most stunning cultural treasures, the world famous taj mahal. We look forward to continuing our visit tonight with a state dinner with the president at the palace. I know Prime Minister modi will agree this has been a very productive visit for both of our countries. Earlier today we expanded our defense cooperation with agreements for india to purchase more than 3 billion of advanced American Military equipment including apache and romeo helicopters, the finest in the world. As our militaries continue to train and operate side by side. In our discussions, Prime Minister modi and i affirmed our two countries commitment to protecting our citizens from radical islamic terrorism. In this effort, the United States is always working productively with pakistan to confront terrorists who operate on its soil. Together, the Prime Minister and i are revitalizing the Quad Initiative with the United States, india, australia and japan. Since i took office, we have held the first quad ministerial meeting, i guess you would call it a meeting, but it seems like so much more than that, and expanded cooperation on counterterrorism, Cyber Security and Maritime Security to ensure a free and open indopacific as we deepen our partnership with india. We remember that our two countries have always been united by shared traditions of democracy and constitutions that protect freedom, individual rights and the rule of law. During our visit, we discussed the importance of a secure 5g Wireless Network and the need for this emerging technology to be a tool for freedom, progress, prosperity, not to do anything where it could be even conceived as a conduit for suppression and censorship. To guarantee that the infrastructure of the future is built in a safe, transparent and accountable manner, the United States is working with a range of partners, including australia and japan, to create the blue dot network, a Major Initiative to ensure countries around the world to have access to private sector led, sustainable and trustworthy options for highquality infrastructure development, and thats whats happening. Another major focus of my discussions with Prime Minister modi is forging bilateral economic relationships that are fair and reciprocal. Our teams have made tremendous progress on a comprehensive trade agreement, and im optimistic we can reach a deal that will be of great importance to both countries. Since i took office, u. S. Exports to india are up nearly 60 . And exports of highquality American Energy have grown by thank you very much 500 . Thats great. As india grows, so do its energy needs. Yesterday exxon mobil signed a deal to improve indias Natural Gas Distribution networks so that the u. S. Can export even more lng to india. We are pleased to be joined by the chairman of exxon mobil, lng Market Development alex volcof. Thank you, alex, where you may be. Thank you very much, alex. And the ceo of chart energy and chemicals. Thank you very much. Thank you both. Thank you, jillian. Thank you very much. Thats a big deal, alex, right . Can you handle it . I think so, right . Its great. To further strengthen our economic ties, the United States is pleased to announce that the u. S. International Development Finance corporation will be establishing a permanent presence right here. Americas especially committed to working with india to improve development and empower women entrepreneurs. That is why my daughter ivanka attended the Global Entrepreneurship summit inna e have since launched the initiative now spear heading projects supporting women in the economy from new delhi to colcota. In our meetings with the Prime Minister, we discussed and agreed to create a Counternarcotics Working Group to confront the growing threat of elicit fentanyl and opiate production. We must rid our societies of these lethal, horrible poisons. We will rid our societies of these bad drugs that are pouring in. Prime minister modi, we have made tremendous advances for our people over the past two days, and working together, i know that our two nations will continue to achieve new breakthroughs, unlock new potential and forge even brighter futures in the years ahead. We think were at a point where our relationship is so special with india. It has never been as good as it is right now, and i think thats because the two leaders of each country, really, we feel very strongly about each other, and we have we have done something thats very unique and weve made some wonderful deals for each of our countries. Once again, we want to thank you and the entire nation of india for honoring the United States with its outstanding welcome, and im pleased to say that the u. S. Indian Partnership is now truly stronger than ever before. This was a great visit with a tremendous friend and a tremendous leader, Prime Minister modi. We wont be taking questions now. Ill be having a News Conference at 5 00 and well take plenty of questions. Thank you all very much. Thank you. Thank you. This concludes the presentation. That is President Trump, of course, speaking with Prime Minister narendra modi, describing it as an extraordinary visit, a magnificent spectacle. And described his rally attended by more than 100,000 people as, quote, love. He and the first lady have visited the taj mahal. They paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He mentioned various trade and military and business deals, as well as efforts to fight terrorism. Lets go back to our Kelly Odonnell who is in india. Kelly, i guess no surprises in the speech here. Reporter and no real headlines. These were the kinds of outlines of the meetings that we anticipated, and in part this seems to be a desire by Prime Minister modi not to have an opportunity for questions. That was clear, and the president certainly signalled that by saying hes going to have his own News Conference later. Often when a u. S. President is with an ally in a democracy, there would be a push to have questions from both press corpss, the indian press corps as well as the u. S. There will be a chance for american reporters to talk to President Trump later, but it is notable that indian reporters who have been following this were not given that opportunity. Now, separate from the trump visit, there has been some violence and unrest in this area in the last couple of days. Unrelated to the trump visit, but part of an indian policy that is dealing with immigration. Thats another area where President Trump and Prime Minister modi have some significant overlap in their interests politically. The circumstances and the particulars are different, but making immigration an important issue is something that both have talked about in their political lives. So the violence is certainly something that Prime Minister modi would not want to talk about. Including the death of a Police Officer with some protests related to that immigrationrelated policy that is discriminatory towards muslims who are trying to seek entrance into india from neighboring countries. One of the messages the u. S. Has tried to send on this trip, although if you werent wellread in on that, you wouldnt have necessarily picked up on it, where the president talked about tolerance today as well as in his speech before the huge crowd at the cricket stadium is concern that the u. S. Has about religious freedom and about tolerance in a society that is democratic. Certainly this is a predominantly hindu nation, but there is a substantial, although minority population of muslims, and theyre in a neighborhood in the world where the muslim faith is certainly prominent, and so any perception of discrimination against muslims is a concern to u. S. Policy. I know that might sound striking when you consider that the president has also tried to put a ban in effect on trade from certain countries that are muslim dominant to the u. S. , but still, u. S. Policy is not in favor of that. So we did get a sense of the relationship, the friendship of the two countries, and some some of the topic areas on the bos n business side of this meeting, the twoday visit to india. As the day progresses, im sure well come back with the president conducts his own press conference. Kelly odonnell, thank you so much for us. Nonetheless, the president longtime trump buddy and associate roger stone. Nonetheless, the president nominated her for a top sanctions job in the treasury department. Then about two weeks ago the president abruptly yanked her nomination. At the time it was unclear exactly why he changed his mind, but now the story is being filled in. Axios reports that shortly before withdrawing the nomination, the president reviewed a memo of her alleged misdeeds that had been prepared by a group of outside conservative activists including ginnie thomas. If that name rings a bell, she happens to be the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence thomas. This group is waging a kind of purge against officials they see as insufficiently pro trump. Their reasons for wanting this u. S. Attorney gone are deeply unnerving. They include not acting on criminal referrals on some of Justice Brett kavanaughs accusers. Signing asking for jail time for flynn. And adjusting the information. The motives are the people advising them and purging perceived enemies are precisely as corrupt and authoritarian as we feared. Im joined now by Washington Post Investigative Reporter carol leonnig, coauthor of the book a very stable genius. Carol, this has been a subplot of the administration from the beginning. I want to say that a president should have people that he trusts and is loyal to. But whats going on here seems different than anything ive ever encountered before. For us, too. I have to say, chris, the last two weeks have been really shocking in terms of what we expect about a Justice Department and the u. S. Attorneys office in the district of columbia is a part, a very important part of the Justice Department. The idea that it should be without fear of favor and blind and objective, and in this case you have people who have a very vested interest in some of the plaintiffs who appeared before this forgive me, the suspects that appeared before this court trying to whisper in the ear of the president that this this group of prosecutors went too hard on these individuals, and, therefore, this u. S. Attorney should be bounced from any future jobs. And in case barbara ladine is a close associate of Michael Flynns. Has a very vested interest. That shouldnt be the controlling opinion, necessarily. Im very Close Friends with the flynns, the ladines are and her husband cowrote a book with Michael Flynn. They were there for his sentencing that did not go as expected when judge sullivan said Michael Flynn would likely do jail time and was not convinced they should proceed with the sentencing at that time until he had seen all of his cooperation. He basically accused Michael Flynn of selling out his country, which shocked all of Michael Flynns allies in the room. They expected something quite contrary, but your point about the purge is really something striking because here you have secret memos written under dark of night shared with the president , almost like a whisper, trying to in a mccarthylike way tell you about how somebody isnt trustworthy enough. Jessie liu has a reputation of being a pretty solid prosecutor who didnt exactly, you know, go against the president s wishes. She was a political appointee who served him, and he or shes being cast aside as somebody who wasnt hard enough on the president s enemies. Theres also one of the more worrying aspects to me, and thats my editorializing here, its just the nature of barr in all of this. It seems that barr is kind of of a type with some of the folks like the guinea thomainnie thom barbara ladines, he feels hes a warrior on the president s behalf current and former justice officials describe an attorney general who doesnt rhode island take advice and prone to rightwing conspiracies he reads on fringe conservative sites on the internet. And honestly, that makes sense of a lot of his behavior, to be honest. You know, cant be in bill barrs head, but there are some actions hes taken that tell you he is the president s lawyer and an ardent supporter, you know, the most classic example was what he did very soon after becoming attorney general, his fourmajor memo right. Explaining that the president had been exonerated. There was nothing to see here when, in fact, there was plenty to see here. This current moment, though, strikes me as something where barr is actually feeling the heat. Interesting. 2,000 more than 2,000 Justice Department alums ar
