We begin in morocco where were starting to understand the scope of a devastating earthquake where 2000 people are dead after 6. 8 magnitude earthquake rocked the country late friday. Another 2000 people are hurt. The u. S. Geological survey says that the earthquake was in americas high atlas mountains, about 50 miles southwest of marrakech. Meanwhile, its still very early and its not hard to see that the city has been left in shambles. Extensive damage, morocco today announcing three days of National Mourning. Adam parson of sky news is in marrakech with the latest. Here in marrakech, theyre having to come to terms with this burden of grief and the chaos that has followed this natural disaster. There is still real fear about what could happen. Heres a very good example of that nervousness. This restaurant behind me was badly damaged by the earthquake on friday, but it only actually collapsed hours, and hours later. And it is that nervousness thats affecting so many people here. Its what you see Hundreds Sleeping Rough because they are fearful that their buildings, their homes may yet collapse. Marrakech is a huge city, its a Tourist Capital of the medina here, its a famous cultural site. Weve seen the buildings there have fallen to the ground. Of course, this is a unesco protected city so very hard to make those ancient buildings earthquake proof. We were up at the airport and the military planes that are bringing people back from the worst affected areas, i saw a crate next to an airplane there a helicopter was about to take off and shuttle people, but thats the big question here. Those villages up in the mountains are very, very hard to get to. At the best of times. Now, of course, those roads have been damaged. We simply dont know how many more people have been injured or killed up there in the atlas mountains. Morocco has declared three days of National Mourning for this tragedy that has happened, and its having to come to terms with it and cope with the ramifications. Adam parsons following what has happened for us and morocco more as we have it. Now to the efforts to hold donald trump and his allies accountable for the scheme to overturn the 2020 election. Our system has at least two tracks to hold the coup plotters responsible for their actions. On friday, a federal judge denied mark meadowss bid to move recultures against him in georgia to federal court. Meadows served as trumps final white house Chief Of Staff, this is important watch, because trump has also signaled he might seek to have his case moved to, you guessed, it federal court. Trump and meadows are just two of the 19 people charged in the Fulton County criminal racketeering case. However, new revelations from an unsealed report from the special grand jury that originally heard the case show jurors recommended charges against 39. People of the 39 people, 21 were not charged last month by Fulton County a fani willis. Those 21 people, includes South Carolina senator lindsey graham, former Georgia Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. While the report doesnt spell out out loud why purdue and loeffler should were left out, their role are well documented. Both georgia senators refused to acknowledge President Biden s election win in the state. They both urged georgia secretary of state, brad raffensperger, to resign. The accused him of mismanaging georges election without providing any evidence of wrongdoing. Loeffler took one step forward, to vow to reject the Voter Certification in january. But something changed her mind. This is loeffler in january 2021 before and after the capitol riot. I have an announcement, georgia. On january 6th, i will object to the Electoral College vote. The violence, the lawlessness, and siege of the halls of congress are an a direct attack on the institution. My egyptian was intended to protect the sanctity of the American Democratic process. I believe there were lastminute changes to the November 2020 Election Process and serious outbreak you larry days that resulted in too Many Americans losing confidence, not only in the integrity of our elections but in the power of the ballot. Only after the insurrection. Loeffler realized the coup went too far. Just on friday, she stood by her actions claiming that she was defending, quote, election integrity. But the tape does not lie. Loeffler was one of the voices in georgia giving rise to the big lie. That has caused republican candidates. Since 2020, one georgia voters have rejected Election Deniers in statewide races over, and over, and over again. So whether its a courtroom, or at the ballot box, georgia serves as a warning for Election Deniers that there are several paths to accountability. Joining us, now msnbc legal analyst and former u. S. Attorney joyce vance. She is the cohost of sistersinlaw pot cast. And former florida congressman david jolly, and Georgia State representative jasmine clark, shes the cohost of the suburban women problem podcast. It is good to see you all, joyce, when it comes to the three u. S. Senators named, graham, purdue, loeffler, i wonder what you make of the decision of fani willis to not charge them in the rico case. I think this is such an important question because it highlights georges process. Trying to use this to separate grand juries, the investigative grand jury, theyre the ones that name the three senators, and a separate grand jury that indites. In front of the investigative grand, jury the only decision is whether there is probable cause, a very low standard. Once that decision is made by the investigative grand jury, than fani willis, the Fulton County d. A. , has to evaluate the evidence to see whether rises to the much higher standard she must meet in the courtroom, proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Here, it seems like she took this many months where people were critical of her, not only putting together her case but making very careful consideration of which of the defendants there was probable cause to proceed on. Actually, they had accumulated sufficient evidence to be confident of a conviction on trial. That is the court of, law jolly, lets talk about the court of opinion. Specifically left or who i think is important to point. Out she still has its important to remind people of the role that she and other members in the Republican Party played in the spot. I wonder when you hear her, the rally that she was that, and her just getting up those supporters in advance of january 6, what that tells you about accountability, about her role in all of this, and the fact that there are people like her who dont believe the fact that they defended donald trump is a career breaker. Alicia, i would say for carrie loeffler, and i would include perdue and other senators as well, they are cases of profiles and the lack of courage because Kelly Loeffler in that needed the donald trump base and so loeffler and perdue were willing to kind of peddled the Conspiracy Theories and the big lie to try to get reelected. And when you saw the more conciliatory Kelly Loeffler, that was the Kelly Loeffler that had now lost and realized the gravity of the moment and had nothing more to gain for clearing the water for donald trump. Did she make that turn on conviction, or was she actually elevating something she didnt believe on the front and . Who knows, but what we do know is that theres an entire lack of leadership by loeffler and perdue. Not unlike what weve seen in the Republican Party. The critical moments in our nations history joins of donald trump administration. I try to make sure that when we talk about donald trump in the, show its always through the lens of accountability and what this all means for our democracy so one of the reasons i wanted to talk about georgia s, yes, there could be accountability in the form of legal accountability but weve also seen in georgia the type of electoral accountability for donald trump, for republicans who have Election Denialism does not work. When you talk about statewide elections in georgia, i want you to talk to me specifically in suburban atlanta. The message that voters have sent lawmakers about Election Denialism and the sanctity of our democracy. I think that people are really ready to move on from what trump tried to do in georgia. And i think especially in my community, we just want to have good elections. We want to be able to vote, we want access to elections, we dont want suppressive laws that take away that access to the ballot box. Thats what people care about when they care about elections. So when donald trump spread the big lie, it really disrupted our communities but not only did to do that, it also led to policies being passed that really took away that access to the ballot box for a lot of georgians. And thats what people are talking about. That is what, in my community, when i talk to the people and in the suburbs of atlanta, thats what they care about. So when we keep playing this over, and over, people are tired of it. Theyre ready to move on. I agree, and i hear you. And yet, representative clark, if voters are ready to move on, republicans dont seem to have gotten that memo or gotten on board with that. Because if trump allies who are now saying they want to investigate d. A. Willis even defend her office when the purport to be this party of law and order, it doesnt actually want to see any law order. I wonder how that, those efforts from republicans are landing with voters. Theyre not landing at all. Heres the truth of the matter, you have senators, like state senator colton war who are trying to beat this escapade of defunding fani williss office. But at the same time, you have republicans in leadership that are like, listen, stop. Youre not doing us any favors. Yes, this might be raising you some funds in your campaign account, but you are literally chipping away from our efforts to move away from this. So i would say that there are some that are just holding on to this. They really feel like grabbing on to trumps coattails is the way to win elections and maybe in their communities they can because theyre in the place where theyre not so worried about a general election. However, overall, throughout the state, it is a losing strategy. Republicans in leadership are telling them, calm down, stand down, stop it. Joyce, i wondered as i watched news of mark meadows this week not getting moved up to federal court as he wanted, does that inform how it judge may rule on a simple request knowing its coming from trump . I think it does. I think mark meadows had the strongest case of any of the defendants here. His attorneys has made this point, even when donald trump was acting in his personal capacity, meadows is the Chief Of Staff was forced to keep his official job head on. And of course the judge rejected that and said it defies belief that when meadows is violating and engaging in political activity to believe that thats part of his job, working for the president of the United States. Thats a campaign function. So the judge rejected meadows argument. Trumpist just that much worse off because hes clearly acting in his capacity as candidate. Trump, not as President Trump when hes trying to overturn the outcome of the election in georgia. I think its a Stone Cold Loser for trump. Stone cold loser congressman julie, i need not remind you or any of the guests or audience, as all of this unfolds, theres a president ial campaign unfolding in the background. We have nbc news reporting that trump allies are sounding the alarm over his liking Iowa Campaign operation, which is interesting to me given that you have the Desantis Allies coming out saying, even a number two placement would be great news for ron desantis. It doesnt even seem like anyone thinks that theyre gonna win iowa. I do wonder for donald trump specifically if he does not plays first in iowa, just how about that is for him. Oh, i mean it is really, really bad. Your talk about seeing the heavyweight champion of the world hit the. Met with a punch. So donald trump does not want that to happen. Thus far it appears there is nothing that really would allow donald trump to be taken out in iowa. The numbers seem pretty set. But we are still four plus months out and ron desantis, tim scott and others are going to spend a ton of money in iowa and we still dont know what we dont know about trumps legal jeopardy. It does not seem that there is any scenario in which he would base standing trial prior to the iowa caucus decision, which is what i think is a pretty firm prediction to suggest trump still winds iowa. But theres a lot unfolding. As we know, day by day, with his legal turmoil. Who knows what much change the minds of iowa voters. Choice you were a target of donald trump today on his truth social. I want to make sure i give you a chance to respond. Well, i think this is what we have seen trump do from early on in his tenure as president. The fact that he is still doing it, but has a much greatly reduced mouthpiece. He is on truth social, not on twitter these days. It is tough for him to land much in the way of criticism with a much smaller audience. But the point i think people need to still be aware of, despite that, is that this is someone who is very interested in targeting people he perceives as enemies. And this burden falls the hardest on fani willis, the Fulton County d. A. Right now. Hes been critical of her. Hes been critical of two of the women who are victims and that case, ruby freeman and her daughter shape moss, who are election workers. And i think we need to continue to insist that Republican Leadership condemn donald trump every time he pulls one of the stones. Its something they refused to do and as long as they condone it, they are sending a message to their voters that its acceptable behavior. And it is not. Especially because we have seen the consequences. That comment and its wake. Joyce, as always, thank you for your time. David and jasmine you are sticking with me. Next, republicans are desperate to win in 2024. It numerology slip some heat on and always policy that no americans reject. And later, Hurricane Lee is turning towards the u. S.
