I have nowhere to go ari. We all have some where to go. I want to ask you because long before donald trump was President Trump, you had class with him and tangled with him and now it is proform of how many people we have seen feud with him from civilians and to many prominent people in government. Two days into this experience and suddenly he has nobody to feud with and no words to say in public. He has reached what is for him a speechless stage. We are in this new history of donald trump, this new period where he quite literally does not what to say and he thought he knew what to say late tuesday night at 1 30 in the morning. Thats the last time we heard him attempt to say anything, twitter is that other game he plays just trying to pretend that hes still kind of in the game. But, it is so crucially important that the president elect and the Vice President elect have gone out and addressed the nation and the president of the United States is speechless about that. He cant concede or admit that it happened and so this is the whimper, the beginning of the whimper which donald trump is going to leave office. A lot of fright out there which i think is totally unnecessary fright of him going some kiend f madness, holding onto office and refusing to leave. They were considered by people who did not know enough about the actual inner working of government and the way this makes it impossible because donald trump seems to be doing impossible they thiings all the. Everyone who has had that fright should stare at the silence of donald trump for these days that well surely continue and that silence is the proof of the powerlessness of which that man sits tonight staring at the end of his presidency. Well put and no surprise. Something to think about. Well dig into it with a lot of people. I hope you enjoy the rest of your night off. I like watching you and rachel and others as this news broke yesterday. Can you believe it yesterday . Thank you, ari. I am ari melber, i want to welco welcome you to our special coverage. As the saying goes, everyone knows what happened. Joe biden is the president elect of the United States. Donald trump is on his way to the exit of presidency. Hes headed there quietly, seating this stage to biden and scenes like this right now you are looking at black lives matter by the white house. We have been tracking ongoings and spontaneous celebration over trump being out and biden coming in. No signs trump will break of any public appearances which we noted in our coverage is unusual for his defeated candidate. President elect biden attended delaware today visiting the grave of his son beau. The current president is out back on the golf course. He continues to resist the traditional concession. We know that. We have been discussing that. He has no ability to speak on these events that are playing out in front of everyone. Former president george w. Bush congra c c congratulated biden today and Mitch Mcconnell has not said anything. Whats notable is how little impact trumps approach is having. I want to speak on this for a second. Take the music out. This president failed to give any spoken response on saturday or today. It may have deny others the final vision of donald trump having to address his loss. Let me begin tonight with this. Whether trump concedes or not, thats about it. The wheels of government goes on. Joe biden transitions tomorrow. The courts are upholding all these state election results, speech or no speech, this outcome is fitting in its own way. A man more interested in p. R. Than tweets than the substance of the job finding in defeat hes focusing on the resolution and the work and yes, the governing is up to others in this famously loud president has turned unusually quiet. A man who beeves and loud finds he has no words left. That had trumps critics celebrating with some iconic lines and many remembering, all beef returned, well done, filet mignon. Lets get right to it rejean robinson and juanita, your thoughts. You said it ari. Filet mignon. What we are seeing is hes trying to grasp the reality or rejecting it. Biden does not need to wait for him to call or the country does not need to wait any kinds of k acception. Whether thats removing the muslim ban or setting up a Coronavirus Task force. Honestly my mind goes to the question of what would we be experiencing now if the Task Force Biden is setting up had been in place on day one earlier this year when we first had the virus in this country. I think a lot of voters are looking for biden to have that direction and clarity and rely on science and give this country a path forward. Michael steel. Share us your thoughts on this first day of the rest of your life . As i noted yesterday morning in america, there was as certain palpable sense of relief. People were dancing in the streets, our allies around the globe are shooting off firework and here in washington the president was doing trying to figure out how to respond and pushing out some circuslike Rudy Giuliani and a few others to claim massive lawsuits to come. The reality is there is no case. The truth as hard as it is and resounding truth is delivered by the American People that we are ready to move on from you. We are ready to lead whatever baggage that came with donald trump in the middle of the road and keep trunking. You also made it sound like a relationship when you said we are ready to move on. I would say some people would say it is you. It is not me, mr. President. The country is saying it is you, not me. Thats actually important because a lot of us were concerned it was us, you know . And not him. There still may be some of us, i know 70 million of us are holding on. I have been in pitch battle the last 24 hours and a lot of my extensiv extensi conservatives. But the People Holding onto that and we are going to have to reconcile with that. We leave that baggage knowing that some of it like a piece of toilet paper on your shoes following. You got to figure out what to do about it. This is not who we are and i think america said as much yesterday. Well, i will just say people wonder when everyone in the press had to stay up straight and khasteve cornacki had to sle in the office and mike. Trump is having a special time of that a little later in our coverage tonight. G. Robinson, it is news and we move fast. Gosh, we are way past saturday morning. We are still in the weekend editi edition. We put something together for u you and our viewers. It came through yesterday. You are above my level and juanita level. You can get into that and speak on the other side of what we put together which is how this all hits when it hits yesterday. We can now project that former Vice President biden has been elected president of the United States. Winning the white house, denying a President Trump a second term. Joe biden has run for president three times and the third time has turned out to be the charm. In the middle of a pandemic, almost 150 million americans voted. Joe biden and Kamala Harris will receive the most votes of any president ial ticket ever. It is easier to be a parent this morning and easier to be a dad. It is easier to tell your kids character matters. It matters. Rachel, the screen right underneath you says joe biden elected, 46th president. I want to go faster like everybody else does but i take comfort in the process. Character matters. People are still dancing in the streets. And so people i dont think the nation has moved past the moment. I think we are still very much in the moment. It will take us some time to digest of what just happened the last four years. You know what happened, tell me. I am trying to figure it out. Looking forward and whatever thats going on inside Donald Trumps head, hes kicking and screaming from the white house. It is necessary it is not just on him of defeat. Those 70 Million People as well who voted for him. They have responsibility and urgency in this as well and just as shocked and stunned and horrified of hillary four years ago it is incumbent on those 70 million voters and other supporters did not vote. It is the outcome and it is what our democracy says it is going to happen the next four years. It is going to happen. We all have to at least buy into the formality of that and so it is not just on him but the supporters as well. To jeans point, michael, having run the Republican Party in a not so far way era. I am curious of what you thought of the war and the path president elect biden offered to those individuals last night. It looked far more welcomed than anything donald trump has done in defeat. Take a look at this moment. It is time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. The bible tells us to everything there is a season. A time to build, a time to reap and sew and a time to heal. This is the time to heal america. Michael. I love the words, theyre powerful and they spoke to me certainly and a catholic christian, i embrace that and even as an old school kind of politician, yes, you win some and you lose some. If you lose, okay, get back in the game in a different way and well come back at it. The problem i have right now ari, people out there want to hold a grudge, they dont want to heal. I saw a couple of pieces out last night talking about well, everybody wants us to embrace joe biden. They did embrace donald trump and my response was you didnt embrace barack obama . And so, come on. The first day the man in inauguration and republicans talking about making him a oneterm president. There was no embrace of healing and trying to bring the country together around some policies. Lets have that discussion but at the end of the day what joe biden is talking about, folks, we cant do it by ourselves. There is no right or wrong way to do this. This is only the american way. Thats what we have always done. We have to figure it out. My fear is i dont think is the vast majority of the 70 Million People supported trump. I think there are just as small harden group of knuckle heads who dont want to let go of the fight. When all of the rest of us are saying okay, you may win the next one, you will want us to stay in with you, right . Why dont we all try to come together right now so we can work on big issues like healthcare and infrastructure and etc. Jean robinson, your final thought this evening. Yesterday, on the day that e biden was declared the winner, we got a new high of coronavirus. We are in the middle of a catastrophe and everyday is getting much worse. We have an emergency to deal with and we do need to pull together and get through this. Another 100,000 people could die before Inauguration Day and thats a real american tragedy. The context of the state here as we move forward. I want to thank everyone. We have al special discussion we are planning. Coming up in our special coverage, well be joined of what happens during a bidens presidency and ahead Valerie Jarrett. Well dig in to Kamala Harris as Vice President elect. We have our panel getting into that right after this break. To that right after this break. Its still warm. Thanks, alice says hi. For some of us, our daily journey is a short one. Voltaren. The joy of movement. What a testament it is to joes character that he had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country and select a woman as his Vice President. While i may be the first woman in office, i will not be the last. Kamala harris making history as Vice President elect. This is such an important breakthrough for the country that at times we have been competing with other big stories including the trumps presidency and coronavirus. We want to reflect on this. I want to start with professor murray, what does president elect harris means to you . As a daughter of an immigrant myself, i am incredibly proud. I have seen Kamala Harris, i have lived in the east bay and i saw her going through being attorney general and senator and now as Vice President. It is amazing, it is especially amazing when you think of all the work that needs to be done in the next couple of years and those children separated at the border from their parents. The person or one of the people wholl be working to remedy that is a woman who herself was a baby cradled in the arms of her immigrant mother. Thats only that can happen in america and it is amazing and poetic and i am delighted. Maya . It is incredibly moving. One of my favorite things is watching pictures and videos that people are going to share young black girls and brown girls looking up at Vice President elect Kamala Harris, theyll be thinking that i can be next. Reputation is a powerful thing and an incredible thing. Well get a chance to see an entire generation. I am really looking forward to those pictures. I appreciate you saying that. We mention the work you are doing throughout of it. Juani juanita, we put a little bit more about on this. I want to hear your response on the other side. Harris came to the radar when she joined the ticket. She drew National Attention early in her career. There is a great District Attorney in San Francisco named Kamala Harris, shes brilliant and smart and does not look like anybody you see on law and order, shes tough, we call her the female of barack obama. This may be easy to forget. Did you know harris won her First Federal office in senate seat on the way to being Vice President elect on the same night that trump won the white house four years ago today. Kamala harris will replace fellow democrat barbara boxer. Secretary clinton has conceded to donald trump. The one star that well be talking about is Kamala Harris. Donald trump in terms of policy is as radical from normal american politics is anything that has happened in our lifetimes. Juanita, that was exactly four years ago tonight. What a long way shes coming four years. What a long four years on top of that. I appreciate you highlighting that. Senator harris is the one seeming that role did not disappoint. Every single turn and opportunity, she leveraged her seat to challenge all the things we saw from this administration as well as prosecute the case against trump in realtime whether it is different policies or actions hes taken in office. Having her step up in that way highlights our preparedness and i also appreciate maya mentioning the inspiration that young girl fs from this. My 87yearsold grandfather elated to experience this at this moment. Do you think hes watching tonight . Absolutely, hey grand dad will you tell him i say hi. I will. Maya, go ahead. Oh, sorry, i was smiling. I thought it was beautiful. I was curious of your reaction because juanita mentioned something you said. Yes, it is young people and older people who never thought they would see this moment. Just seeing people dancing in the streets and overwhelmed by that kind of excitement. It is certainly not a single generation thats doing that right now. We keep oncoming back to the generational piece which is so important when you are breaking barriers because you are talking to people who did fnot get to grow up with one single example and on top of this discrimination of being told oh no, you will never get to do that and it is not your place and all those types of things. Only the part that we want to highlight, some parts that are worth seen more than once was the generational point that Vice President elect harris made. To the woman most responsible for my presence here today, my mother, whos always in our hearts. When she came here from india at the age of 19, she did not quite imagine this moment. She believed so deeply in america where a moment like this is possible. Professor . This really took me back to the day i graduated from law school and my mother approached me sobbing. I was so embarrassed. I said please stop, mom. I grew up in a time where the only thing a woman could be was as teacher or a nurse. It never occurred to me that i would have a daughter who would be a lawyer. I could think about her coming from jamaica to the u. S. To be a nurse and her mother who worked and sold eggs so all her daughters would be able to graduate from high school. This is an amazing, moving story. It is an immigrant story. It is a story of a black woman and south asian woman. It is a story of what is possible when people get out of the way and let people do what they were born to do. Oh, i see heads nodding. Thats a fitting point for us, just take in. I want to thank professor murray and maya rupert and regina for joining us. Thank you. We have news coming out of washington in delaware already on the biden harris trash bansi and what the cabinet is looking like. We have Valerie Jarrett live, next and obama biden is next.
