MSNBCW Morning Joe June 20, 2016 10:00:00

There will be this and that at the convention. Who are they going to pick . Ive beat everybody. But i dont mean beat. I beat the hell out of them, right . Beat the hell out of them. And were going to beat hillary. And it would be helpful if the republicans could help us a little bit, you know . Okay . And good morning. It is monday, june 20th. Welcome to morning joe. With us on set along with me and joe, we have legendary columnist and msnbc contributor, Mike Barnicle. Former Communications Director for president george w. Bush, nicole wallace. Managing editor of bloomberg blocks and cohost of with all due respect that airs at 6 00 p. M. On msnbc, Mark Halperin, and msnbc political analyst and professor at the university of Chicago School of public policy, democratic congressman, harold ford jr. And joe, if i didnt have nbc sports intern graham tremly trailing my daughter everywhere and in my life, i would not understand this cleveland thing, but i do. I have been given the speech. It was amazing. It was an amazing comeback for a team that hasnt that wasnt expected to win. Had the best player in the nba, and yet he went down to miami and promised to bring a champ n championship back to cleveland. Nobody thought lebron james could do it. He did and he came up big near the end. With an unbelievable block and then cleveland, winning their first championship since, i guess, 64. Loserville, no war. And as somebody that grew up in atlanta, georgia and understands what its like to be called loserville, usa, i know that is a heavy sports burden that they gladly have lifted off of them. Were going to talk about that a little bit. But mika, lets talk politics very quickly. For those who were hoping that there was going to be some turnaround, some pivot for donald trump this weekend, i wrote it down, he talked about profiling mosques, of course, hed been talking about a muslim registry. Hes even talked in the past about making muslims carry cards. Sounds a lot like nazi, germany. Why dont you just put a patch right on their shoulder. And then started talking about getting guns in the hands of people and nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. A position so extreme that even the nra had to come out and call him out on that. This is there is no pivot and it continues and thats why the gop appears to be in open rebellion right now. Well, it seems so. And by the way, there was a cop in the nightclub. It did not really help the situation, given the gun that he had. Donald trumps complaints about party unity come amid newly revealed plans to stop his nomination from delegates to next months convention. Antitrump delegates, many of them former ted cruz supporters, hope to change party rules that would allow them to vote for whomever they want. The change would come in the rules committee, chaired by excongresswoman, Enid Mickelson of utah, along with ron coffman, an ally of mitt romney and the bush family. Mickelson has been critical of trump in recent weeks saying, neither Hillary Clinton nor donald trump are going to be people that we poison our children toward and say, i want you to be just like them when you grow up. Responding to the heightened speculation, the rnc Communications Director put out a statement. There is no organized effort, strategy, or leader of this socalled movement. It is nothing more than a media creation and a series of tweets. But last night, supporters in aGroup Calling itself free the delegates claimed several hundred delegates are behind them. And that they will raise money for a staff. On meet the press, House Speaker and Convention Chairman, paul ryan, addressed brewing signs of a rebellion, while trump shared his thoughts on multiple platforms. Shouldnt delegates, if they have a if theyre having Second Thoughts about it, have an opportunity to express those Second Thoughts and be unbound and let the will of the convention decide for sure they want him . Thats not my place to decide. My place, because of, again, this role i have, which i feel has very important responsibilities is to call balls and strikes and just play it by the rules. It is not my job to tell delegates what to do, what not to do, or to weigh in on things like that. They write the rules, they make their decisions. But all i want to make sure of, its done above board, clearly, honestly, and by the rules . I think were going to have a Great Convention and i think were going to go into a great victory. It would be nice if the republicans stuck together. I think because im a different kind of a candidate. And you know, paul ryan said that. Im a different kind of a candidate. I think i win either way. I can win one way or the other. With them or without them . I do believe that. I think because i obviously won the primaries without them. Im an outsider and i won the primaries. I do believe that we can win either way. But it would be nice if we stuck together. How would you like to have a party where myself and others travel the country and worked for a long time. Now, were shorter than i thought, because remember, i was supposed to maybe be able to pull it out at the convention and we pulled it out two months before the convention. And one of the people who probably hasnt quite given up yet, one of the people was trying to buy up all of the second ballot people, right . And ikei kept saying, let them have them, because its expensive to get them. The largest audience in the history of cable television. Now, i dont think it was for jeb, but maybe im wrong, okay . By the way, jeb is working on the movement, just so you understand. I love competition like that. I love it. So, so, look, look. Low energy. I didnt say it, you did. I get a kick when these poor, poor people that have been fighting me forever, they just dont understand. They cant beat me. They just cant beat me. So now i hear, and we just finish off. So i hear they want to try to do something at the convention. Wouldnt it be funny if trump gets recordsetting votes, the biggest in history, has an unbelievable number of states. And somebody that was beat like a drum says, our nominee is that. First of all, its not legal. Cant do it. Second of all, the Republican National committee is with me 100 . Over the last week, donaldTrump Campaigned in five states that have republicans and the Governors Mansion, but not a single one appeared with him in public. Governor Brian Sandoval of nevada will not currently commit to voting for trump, while Arizona Governor doug doocy, georgia governor nathan deal and mccrory attended private fundraisers. And none of the republican senators campaigned with him either, although there was business on capitol hill. Joe . Mark halperin, obviously, a lot of Republican Leaders feel like theyre an absolutely terrible position right now and this move quietly grows to try to get donald trump pushed to the side. It is certainly a long shot. But whats it looking like right now . Its a fascinating moment in the history of trumps relationship with the Republican Party. The big turning point is now, the leaders of the party would prefer trump not be the nominee. Theyre willing to have a very messy convention if that could somehow happen. They dont want to be seen as leading the movement. They know it would fail if its seen as elites trying to take the nomination away from them. Theyre hoping to behind the scenes, orchestrate a little bit of grassroots organic support. Trumps right. This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support among some delegates to say, we want to be able to vote our conscience. We know paul ryan said to chuck todd, people need to be able to vote their congress, members of Congress Need to decide on their own, trump is right that people are plotting against him. I dont know that it will succeed, but it is a big moment. He says he wants the party unified, hell have to work to unify it. Because people are not out there, backing him up right now. Well, and nicole, if you look at what donald trump said over the weekend, again, i just dont think it would be that hard for him to actually throw water on this fire. Instead, he just goes out to the garage, gets kerosene, and just starts dumping it on the flames. I mean you lots of kerosene. You have him talking, again, about a muslim not the muslim ban, but profiling. Hes a guy thats talked about a registry for muslims. He talked about people in the nightclub that were drinking. If theyd all been packing heat, there wouldnt have been as many killings. Taking positions so extreme that even wayne pierre has to come out and say, no. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Thats dangerous. I mean, hes not. And listen to his speeches. Hes still talking about polls and cable news ratings like hes running in an early republican primary state. Still doesnt get it. Yeah. I think the story, though, at this point, its never been about the elites, so i think we should resist the temptation to make it about the elites now. My sense is that everyone is waiting for something that will never happen. Trumps waiting for respect that he thinks he deserves for his stunning primary victory, never going to happen. People are horrified by the racial undertones of this candidacy. The republican ruling class is waiting for him to stop cloaking his candidacy and demagoguery around racial issues and crazy statements around the ones you just listened. Never going to happen. The people around trump and his deep inner circle are waiting for him to pick up a book and read it instead of reading twitter. Never going to happen. So this campaign, from now until election day, is going to people are going to make their decision, sort of, in the context, and in the climate of all these standoffs. Theyre not going to end. So as joe mentioned, in the wake of the deaths of 49 people in an orlando nightclub, donald trump suggested profiling may be necessary going forward. You said you would check, respectfully, the mosques. How do you respectfully check a mosque . Well, you do as they used to do in new york, prior to this mayor dismantling. By the way, if you go to france right now, theyre doing it in france. In fact, in some instances, theyre closing down mosques. I think profiling is something were going to have to start thinking about as a cup and other countries do it. And you look at israel and others and they do it. And they do it successfully. And, you know, i hate the concept of profiling. But, we have to start using common sense and we have to use, you know, we have to use our heads. And on the campaign trail, trump suggested what might have helped stop the shootings in orlando. What happened was an assault on our country. It was an assault on the gay community. Our whole theme is make America Great again. But ive ive revised it. Its make America Great again, its make america safe again. Safe. If you think orlando was the end of it, with this weak attitude and this pathetic president that we have, it wasnt, folks. It wasnt. President obama is trying to make terrorism into guns. And its not guns, folk s. It is not guns. It is not guns. This is terrorism. Nobody will protect your Second Amendment like Donald John Trump. Nobody. Nobody. If in that club, you had some people, not a lot of people, because you dont need a lot of people, but if you had somebody with a gun strapped on to their hip, somebody with a gun strapped on to their ankle, and you had bullets going in the opposite direction, right at this animal who did this, you would have had a very, very different result. Believe me, folks. Very different result. What donald trump has said is what the American People know is common sense, that if somebody has been there, to stop this faster, fewer people would have died. Thats not controversial, thats common sense. So you dont like the idea of people going into nightclubs armed to the teeth. Of course, no one thinks people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms. That defies common sense and defies the law. I dont think you should have firearms where people are drinking, but ill tell you this, everybody, every american starts to needs to start having a security plan, we need to be able to protect ourselves, because theyre coming. Note to donald trump and to that nra guy, according to police, an orlando officer was working extra duty at the pulse nightclub. There was someone there. There was someone there. So dont change the facts to back up your really bad points. And quote, engaged in a gun battle with the guy, omar mateen, before the gunman went deeper into the club. Joe, its so hard to watch donald trump, because he could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much better. It is an embarrassment, every day, the embarrassment deepens, because he just simply refuses to stop playing to the lowest common denominator. And mike, that lowest common denominator over the weekend got donald trump saying that people Drinking Alcohol in a nightclub at 2 00 a. M. , should have guns strapped to their waists and firing those weapons. He said it, bullets, gunfight at the o. K. Coral. Gunfight at an orlando nightclub at 2 00 a. M. When bullets are flaying across not just there, hes suggesting that people take guns, strapped to their waists, to nightclubs. Something that even the nra will not follow him down that dark rabbit hole. Well, they seem to be no, they didnt. No. They said they said, nobodys suggesting that people drinking alcohol in nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. Should be carrying guns into that nightclub, mike. This is insanity. Well, joe, its a little bit more than insanity, too. I mean, donald trump is running, ladies and gentlemen, for the presidency of the United States. The level of misinformation, innuendo, ignorance, rumor that comprise most of what he says and most of what he said over the weekend is staggering. It is staggering and it lends credence to the fact that apparently there are a group of people, delegates, perhaps, trying to turn this nomination over, before they get to cleveland. Its never happened before in the history of american politics in this country, that you have this level of incompetence confronting another candidate for presidency. Its amazing. Absolutely amazing. Mark halperin, where are we, Mark Halperin. What are you hearing inside the Trump Campaign and around the Trump Campaign . I mean, what ive heard is at least, on my side, a lot of despondents, that this guy cannot grow. Even people close to donald trump shocked that he has wasted the past five weeks the way he has and hes wasted another weekend with nonsense like this. Well, there are a lot of people that are indignant and trying to figure out, as nicole suggested, things arent going to change. It would be effortless for him to Start Talking about the economy, changing washington, not getting on to these side areas, and people around him are amazed at how serene he is. I talked to someone who spent a fair amount of time with him last week who said, east doing what he always does. Hes on the plane, watching cable news. Theres no sense from him of urgency about changing course at a time when the polls, the fundraising, the television advertising, the Political Support are not in his favor. But it would be very easy for him to change, but theres no indication to anyone that i talked to this weekend that he plans to change or thinks he needs to. Which, mika, seems to answer the question weve been asking now for the past three weeks, does Donald John Trump want to actually win . And all of the evidence, if you look at all of the objective evidence on what is required to win a president ial race, the answer is no. He is going to turn the white house over to Hillary Clinton. Hes going to turn the United States Supreme Court over to Hillary Clinton. He can say what he wants, but anybody that knows politics knows that this is the equivalent of a guy training for a marathon and five weeks before the marathon, all hes doing is sitting on his couch, drinking beer, talking about how great of a runner he is. Smoking a cigarette. And dont forget the senate and maybe the house, too. And by the way, these republicans that are saying, oh, you need to just blindly get behind him. They dont understand, hes not only turning the white house over to Hillary Clinton by his actions, and he is, hes turning the Supreme Court for a generation. Those of us who actually care about things like this, and have been worried about things like this for decades, know that his actions today lead to a Supreme Court that liberals dominate for a generation. The senate endangered. You look at the numbers, were starting to see that. And the house of representatives possibly also even in danger. And were making a warning today, or at least i am, because its going to be too late, soon. We were talking about this six weeks ago, before we skidded into the ditch adds badly as he has. He doesnt have that much time to clean things up. And it just keeps getting worse every day. Nor do the leader who still endorsing him at this point. They have a lot of time to clean that up, because what weve got here, at the very least, is their true colors are coming out. Those who we thought had convictions, those who we thought were the great hope. Those who we thought would lead abuse the future are showing their true colors. Theyre fearful, theyre scared to lose certain things in the shortterm, in the longterm, theyre letting themselves down, theyre letting down their constituents. Meanwhile, senator Elizabeth Warren
