MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Alex Witt December 9, 2017

Good morning everyone, i am alex witt. It is 9 00 a. M. In new york. Here is whats happening. Why some say President Trump should not be at the museum at all. Get out and vote for roy moore. Do it. One more time. One more time President Trump doubling down on the Alabama Senate accused of the conduct. Fbi warning of new details. One of the president s top aids rather. And the al franken fallout and new reaction. But, we begin with politics and the president s ramping up his support for roy moore on twitter this morning saying a big contingent of very enthusiastic roy moore fans at the rally last night. We cannot have a pelosi schumer. Here is what the president told in florida. It is time to get our priorities straight. This guy is screaming we want roy moore. Hes right. Just so i can satisfy this gentleman out there. How many people here are from the great state of alabama . Whoa. The future of this country cannot afford to lose a seat in the very, very close United States. We cannot afford it folks. We need somebody in that senate seat wholl vote for our make America Great again agenda. Get out and vote and vote for roy moore. Do it, do it. Meanwhile, democrats ramping up their get out the Vote Campaign for doug jones with cory booker and john lewis. While the president is heading to jacksonville this morning. Hes expected to say a remark as we take a look at air force one. Well see if that is all turning to snow. So probably we dont want turn to snow there. Snow is headed our way here. Several civil rights speakers are boycotting the event. Kristen welker is live with us. Reporter a lot of people here are saying they are honored to host the president while others are saying theyre outraged. On t President Trump reaching out to the black community over night and a rally in pensacola. I love this guy. Lock at this guy, black for trump, i love you. John lewis at odds again and lewis cancelling his keynote address at the Opening Museum along with mississippi representative Benny Thompson saying in a joint statement President Trump attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people at the museum. The president created a hostile climate in the nation. The white house is fighting back. The president is reaching out going to the museum and celebrating it. While campaigning right here in jackson. A predominantly africanamerican city. I say get that son of the [ bleep ] off the field right now. Hes fired. He deepens frustration over the summer seeming to equate White Supremacists with counter protesters. I think there is blame on both sides. I have no doubt about it and you dont have any doubt about it. Mississippi are divided. Some are worried it could turn the celebration to c confrontation. President trump will tour the museum and deliver remarks. He maybe greeted by protesters who are expected to turn out. Alex. That would not be a surprise, kristen welker. Thank you for that. Lets bring in eugene scott and kate martell. Well go with you first, kate. Why is it important for the president to make this trip happen despite all the backlash . It is important for the president to be making this trip because all the racial tensions thats been going on and this could be the opportunity for President Trump to come out and have diplomatic words and say things that are necessary controversial. Well be interested to see how controversial it ends up being. It is important of all the racial tensions. We are talking about the kkk and nazis coming up in previous statements. It is a shame that we are ta talking about this. It is interesting to see how the president is coming out and the reaction. Is there any consensus or had the president not gone to mississippi today . Well, it is not consensus and part of that is the president won the state of mississippi and there is a lot of voters in the state who are looking for ward o sing. It is not something that you see often for the president visits to the deep south. What the president is going to be able to do is garner a favor with many of his people who are already on the trumps train. The question is will he be able to attract people who are not specifically black voters. Any consensus by john lewis or ben thompson did the right thing by cancelling their appearances there . They did the right thing people are frustrated that the president has done an insufficient job and supporting black voters. We have to remember this museum is about honoring civil rights activists. This is something that the president repeatedly criticized, nfl players and black life matter protesters. What these people are doing is highlighting inconsistency in the white house. Get out and vote for roy moore. You heard it in the speech in florida as well. Kate, even though the white house maintained that mr. Trump is not going to alabama to campaign for more. Inside one of alabamas largest media market. It was there and televised and there you got it. Why you got this approach . And why not go to alabama . Thats the question that i was asking myself. 40 of the media market in pensacola is coming from alabama citizens. The fact that President Trump came on and said he would not be supporting and actively campaigning for roy moore and he comes out and hold a Campaign Style rally. Hes not fooling anybody here. It was not a subtle way to be campaigning for him. Hes using all caps coming out and being proroy moore right now. It is interesting for me in this whole race to step back from this and say that we are not seeing many people voting for against doug jones. This is all about roy moore. That could end up helping roy moore. I have seen some studies that show that 58 of alabama voters have no negotiations when it comes to abortion and that could actually, the issue itself could load to roy moore end up in the nate. So to cates point of being about roy moore and less about doug jones. Democrats are sending some of the most high profile lawmakers to alabama. Theyre trying to energyize the africanamerican votes to help doug jones win. I know you are talking about this in this article. The timing of this, why would it take them so long and is the conservatives too late . There is concerns too late. We are passed the registration deadline. The idea that john lewis and booker could inspire some people to vote. One of the reasons this is so late because in the earlier days, the jones method was not reaching out those white voters. But, there is a chance that this is a long range, longterm game plan. We know the cory booker is someone that the Democratic Party is looking at in the 2020. And he actually defended some black civil rights workers in the state who had chargers brought against him from jeff sessions. They are hoping to get people engaged beyond this race. All right, guys, i want to thank you very much for joining me. Cate and eugene, it is good to see you both. Coming up, the backlash against President Trumps visit to the Civil Rights Museum. Whats next . I am going to speak to the prominent leader of that movement. Next. For this white house o of when it is very well thompson and lewis. This is an interview with my colleague andrea yesterday. Joining me now democratic member, al green from texas. Thank you very much for joining me on a saturday morning. Are you willing to give the president credit for at least visiting the Civil Rights Museum opening today . Thank you for having me. The president is there for reasons associated with things that are not going to be beneficial to the people that are within the museum. The people that made the history that we plan to celebrate. Hes there for a photo opt. Hes not there going to announce hes going to do something significant to change the lives o f africanamericans. Hes been to the movement that are in place currently to help africanamericans. He opposed to black life matter and taking on police brutality. Hes just going for the wrong reasons. He can have his photo opt but he wont have the ability to have the credibility to have rich history and social rights to adeiny degree of his efforts. Congressman, do you think congressman lewis and congressman thompson are boycotting this and trying to share common grounds. Yit is just a photo opt. Thats not what they are about. They are about making significant change. John lewis was there on and beat the march and peacefully protesting all the way back to the church where they started. Benny thompson have been apart of the civil rights movement. Hes trying to make sure that people get their fair share of the economic order. You got a civil rights leader and they want to get things done. They dont want to show up and shake hands. John lewis, there is no one greater and the fact that when he stands over the microphone, people listens. Did he miss the opportunity that i understand scheduled to make the remarks. Could he make remark to the president specifically. He can always make his remark to the president. The president is not there to be moved by remarks. This president seems to be totally deaf when it comes to issues of concerns to africanamericans. We have concerns of healthcare and he does not seem that concern. He does not care much about the minimum wage. They wanted him to do something about good tax bill, they could add the minimum wage to it and lift it up to 15 or 20 an hour and let it bubble up. There are other ways for the president to be helpful and a photo opt is not helpful. Backing up to what you are saying, you took that in terms of putting together some impeachment effort and they did fail this week. I want to outline the two articles, one for associating the presidency of White Nationalism and a bit later today, i am speaking with congressman emanuel cleaver. Do you this morning feel let down by your fellow democrat sns. No, i dont. The honorable john lewis voted with us and Benny Thompson did as well. When rosa park took that seat on the bus, she did not do it assuming that she would end segregation in the south at that time. She did it because it was the right thing to do. Sometimes you have to do the right thing and perhaps, it will become a spark. We had 58 votes. Thats nearly a third of the democratic caucus. About 57 more than people thought we had. When doctor king went to jail, he did not think he will end segregation but he did the right thing. You have to stand up to hate and you have to fight it. You have to stand and look at it in the eye and let it know that you are there to defend and protect people that would be victims. Let me add this. When the president associates the presidency with the neo nazi and hate mongers to charlottesvilles. These people leave and they go back to jobs where they are serving food to persons of color. One can imagine what they do to the food. One can only imagine why people dont get loans they qualify for because of a neo nazi being the person taking the application. What we got to do is stand up to hate and the person who did not vote with us, i ha. This is the first step and it is a process. I wont falter and give up and give out. I am going stay on this fight. I did not come to congress to placate hate. Will you wait to put forth talk of impeachment again until after the Russian Investigation or as i am looking at the reasons of your article that seems to stand independent of russia. It is time for us to put the hate agenda on the congressional agenda. It is time for congress to weigh in. I would add this as an important point. Due process is impeachment. Thats why it is an article of the section. The president gets his due process and hes being troeated fairly and it would come to the house. This would mean by which a president can be made accountable for his insidious n excitement causing people to do harm to the country. It may take generations over coming some of the ugliness bei being recorded. It is time for some of us to take the stapnd. Maxine waters was there and Benny Thompson was there and Cedric Richmond was there. We had many people. People who are determined to fight hate and not placate and not wait and not wait until there is a better time when doctor king wrote his letter from the birmingham jail, he wrote it because eight members of the clergy were saying this was not the time. Wait until the judicial system cannot handle it. Let the Law Enforcement officers hand it. This is the business of congress. We ought to take care of our business. Democrat senator al dpreegre thank you for your time. A firsthand look inside one of the clashes, next. All right, dont need to push. We turn ourselves directly in the middle here. To most people, i look like most people. But on the inside, i feel chronic, widespread pain. Fibromyalgia may be invisible to others, but my pain is real. Fibromyalgia is thought to be caused by overactive nerves. Lyrica is believed to calm these nerves. Im glad my doctor prescribed lyrica. For some, lyrica delivers effective relief for moderate to even severe fibromyalgia pain. And improves function. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or actions. Tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worse depression, unusual changes in mood or behavior, swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling, or blurry vision. Common side effects dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain, swelling of hands, legs and feet. Dont drink alcohol while taking lyrica. Dont drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. Those whove had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. With less pain, i can do more with my family. Talk to your doctor today. See if lyrica can help. Welcome back everyone, i am alex witt. It is 27 past the hours. Here is following the clash after jerusalem is recognized as the capitol of israel. Troops rallied for the third day. Nbc correspondent Richard Engel got caught up in one of them. Reporter palestinians claim that jerusalem is their capitol, too. Okay, you dont need to push. We got ourselves directly in the middle here. These Security Forces are trying to break up the demonstration before they are able to congregate for the palestinians, this is their way of showing they dont accept the rally claim jerusalem. It was an aggressive crack down but over quickly. Richard engel deserves to be applauded. On saturday, air strikes from fire coming from gaza. New today, a New York Times report, one of the president s top aid with Robert Muellers team on thursday and friday. The fbi officials woarned hicks that some of the people reaching out were russian operativeopera. Joining me now is chuck roseb g roseburgrosebur rosenburg. Good morning alex, this is fairly routined c. It happens more often than you imagine. If one of our Intelligence Services pick up the fact that the foreign power trying to reach american citizens, it seems to what they did here. They are called defensive briefings, someone come to you and say alex, the person contacted you may not be the person they are representing themselves. That sounds like the fbi did the right thing. I am definitely talking to my executive producer of what we got here. What do you think the odds are of hicks never telling about the these. Hard to say. Most people would do what you do, alex and brief up. Theyre trying to reach you. I dont know what she did but i know what i would do and i understand what you would do. Talk about the gop, of course, led by the president stepping up the attacks on the fbi up to michael flynn, he pleaded guilty lying to investigators and agreed to cooperate in muellers team. 59 responded saying they believed senior official had inappropriate contact with russia. How much does it may a role in an investigation like that in. Not at all. If you are talking about bob mueller perspective and the men and women working for him, they dont care. In the end, theyll follow the facts and apply it to the law. There is a group of people that matter a lot and that would be a jury of twelve men and women, beyond that, public holding, meaningless. All right, regarding donald trump jr. , seven hours before the house intel committee, his lawyer planing they they realized that information about the interview had been linked and one email that was mischaracterized by reporters. Everything we know of the russia story comes from leaks. Does he have a point that this underminds the investigation at all. Does it under mind the credibility of the investigation . Well, only if the leaks are coming from the prosecutors and the agents and my guess is they are not. Here ais a good reason for it. It would be a crime for them to disclose what they are learning there in the investigation. Those rules dont apply to anybody else so for instance if you are my lawyer and i am a witness and we go into talk to the investigators, those grand jury, those secrecy rules dont apply to me and you. First of all, they are not leaks, depending on whos saying it and where it is coming from. Second, again, the mueller team is going to file the facts and they are not going to be knocked off track by this stuff and i know some of the folks from that team and i had the privilege of working for bob mueller at the fbi and theyre going to stay focused on their mission. Given that you know these folks on muellers team, you know mueller as well. What do you supposed they wanted to hear from her . A lot of threads from this garment, right . It is not surprising that theyre going to have her there for a long time. Shes been with the president for quite a bit and a lot of the senior white house officials and for quite a while now. It is not surprising. I have done big complicated collar cases, when i was prosecutors i met with witnesses for days and frankly for multiple times. So, would not surprise me if think had her back. This is the way you make investigations and you spend a lot of times asking good questions and follow up on leads and if you need someone coming back, you have them come back. All right, chuck rosenburg, i will look forward to speaking you again. Thank you, chuck. Happening right now, the deadly fires, and confirmed of a woman died on the crash. The thomas fire is 10 contained and 143,000 acres. Lets go to scott cohn, good morning to you, how abou
