MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Ali Velshi November 9, 2017

Start with robert costa from the Washington Post, the paper that published the story. What did you learn in the story . We all learned a lot from this story. The Washington Post, high colleagues here in the newsroom, have been reporting on judge moore and his relationship with the people who are under age and also over 18, but alarms reporting, people going on the record, women going on the record about their experiences with judge moore when he was 32 years old, and a prominent lawyer in the community. One of the things that come the out here is that roy moore, this was all happening about 34 years ago. Roy moore has come out and said that he denies all the allegations. I guess in the process of the Washington Post, going to roy moore for comment that must be how he got this information to breitbart, which put out an article before the story came out . That is true. Breitbart actually said in their story that the Roy Moore Campaign through some person provided the information to the Washington Post had shared with the campaign looking for comment. Its also important to read in the Washington Post story that my colleagues went down to alabama. They met with these women. This was not opposition research. This was something the Washington Post found throughout the course of its reporting on this senate race. It has become a real challenge for the Republican Party today in washington. This is a closely watched race. Even though its in a ruby red state. And it is one of those races in which roy moore is ahead of his democratic contender. Some cases, low double digits, mostly high single digits, depending on what youre looking at. In other words, not a given roy moore would win this but he was ahead . Democrats have a question facing them right now. Do they pour more resources into Doug Jones Senate campaign ahead of the special election . Do more to see democrats come back in the south . And then the republicans have a question, too. They have to ask themselves, could there be a writein candidate to maybe step up in alabama, and counter moore, should moore kmochoose not to s aside. That writein candidate could be luther strange. He didnt answer a question when asked, whether hed consider doing that. He is certainly one of the senators asked. A dozen before me said this, if the allegations are true, he must step aside, almost as if theyre reading from the same script. What does this look like if roy moore does step aside . Theyre still figuring it out. Just on the phone to a longterm adviser to mitch mcconnell. And mcconnells political here in washington, reflects what a lot of republicans said today. Pedophiles, if the allegations are true, pedophiles dont have a place in the Republican Party and theyre trying to adjust the situation. John mccain, senator from arizona, has said moore should step down regardless if the allegations are true, because hes so deeply disturbed by the post reporting. Other republicans have the caveat, if true, theyd like to see him step aside. Nbc news political analyst at the Washington Post, thank you for your reporting on this, robert. Lawmakers and highprofile figures in the Republican Party have had very strong reactions to this so far. Theyre ripping this up, folks. Its tile. Im so happy theyre upsencht. Im going to that is the no the reactions theyve had. Across the board, reactions have been remarkably strong. Bring in Garrett Haake from capitol hill, gathering many of these reactions. Garrett, a lot of the republican senators are skipping right by the typical, well, lets wait to find out more. I havent read the article, seen the story. Theyve gone right to, if its true, roy moore needs to step aside . Reporter that caveat, what you just said, ali. If its true. The followup question were trying to get is what more information do they need . The Washington Post has four on the record interviews with these women including the one who has the most salacious accusations from back when she was 14 years old. The question is what more do you need to hear to get beyond there, if its true . John mccain so far being the only person ive seen to come right out and say, because of these allegations, he should go. John mccain seemed to be the one person to say i believe this woman. Its also striking, ali, over the last couple weeks weve been trying to ask republican senators about roy moore. Hes a very controversial figure. Right. Hes said things like homosexual access should be illegal. Second time he got kicked off the bench in alabama, was for refusing to enforce a Supreme Court decision about samesex marriage. He says keith elson shouldnt be in congress because hes a muslim. All of these things. When you ask republican senators last week, i dont have to agree, im going to support him. Disagreements in the family and thats good enough. This is apparently a line not good enough for republicans and youre seeing republicans get off the roy moore train, like the last person has to pick up the check. Getting as far from him as they k. It wouldnt have taken much for some republicans to get off the train. This was not the republican establishments choice. There is a sitting senator from alabama who was defeated in the primary. Luther strange. Big luther, as President Trump calls him. Roy moore didnt have a lot of friends on capitol hill to start with. Reporter no, but was getting more and here last week. Remember, meeting with senators. Yes, you talked to him. Reporter i tried to talk to him and he wouldnt answer questions about his past position. Up to five outspoken claimed official endorsements including john cornyn from texas, the number two senator republican. Thats about as establishment as you can get. Cornyn, by the way, is now one of those people, again, saying, if these allegations are true, moore should get out of the race. As early as an hour and a half ago, he was an on the record endorser of roy moore. More than a dozen republican senators, most you got for us, saying what theyre saying. What is roy Moores Campaign saying . Reporter roy Moores Campaign put out a lengthy statement trying to tie this entire article to sort of a Democratic Left Wing Smear Campaign against the former judge saying that hes endured most outlandish attacks of any candidate in history. Saying his democratic opponent is in a death spiral and this is a lastditch hail mary. The last part is objectively not true. Hes down about ten points not out of the running by any margin but calling this defamatory fake news. In that printed statement. Fighting back about as aggressively as they can without putting their man on camera to actually answer questions about any of this. And what happened . Whats the logistics of this . The National Republican senatorial kwcommittee, the sam memo. If true, he should step aside. The ballot is printed, i think sent out to early voters already . Reporter heres the key thing, ali. There is nothing that republicans can do to force roy moore off this ballot. Remember, this is a guy who the whole rap on his originally, somehow too embarrassing, too outside of a figure to represent republicans and then won the primary. This is someone who doesnt particularly care what Establishment Republicans think about him. Hell remain on the printed ballots, those mailed out on the absentee ballots. The question, i dont know the answer yet, calling trying to get reporting from the alabama election, about writein candidates and what else can be done to force someone else into the race. The fact of the matter, no one can pull roy moore all that ballot except roy moore. No kidding. Thanks very much. Garrett haake on capitol hill. Well keep you updated and revisit it about how they got the information they got and what they make of it. Breaking news on the trip that the president well, donald trump, when not president , took to moscow in 2013. After a business meeting before the Miss Universe pageant a russian participant offered to send five women to Donald Trumps hotel room. What the president s bodyguard, Keith Shiller, told congress this week according to three sources there for the interview. Joining me now is nbcs ken delanian, who helped break the story. Ken, tell us what youve heard . Reporter ali, the most important thing about this is that Keith Shiller testified he thought this offer was a joke. So he took it as a humorous offer and then he later discussed it with donald trump as they were walking back to trumps hotel room that night in moscow, ali. According to his testimony. And the reason he was asked about this, of course, is because theres this dossier out there written by a former British Intelligence officer alleged donald trump was covorting with prostitutes at this hotel on this trip and shiller is denying it saying it didnt happen. Heres he said what did happen. He testified that he basically watched donald trump go to bed that night. Stood in front of his hotel room for a time and eventually went to bed himself and democrats drilled down on the fact that he, of course, couldnt say what happened for the rest of the night. He wasnt there, but he answered, according to my sources, he didnt believe anything happened and that donald trump went to sleep alone, ali. Ken what do we think this has to do with the reports in the dossier . Could it be the same source of information that has been misconstrued or put into the dossier . Whats the connection . You know, thats a great question, and katy tur has been reporting that this story, this sort of alternate story harks been out there for a while. The idea that, no, what was alleged in the dossier didnt happen. Instead, Keith Shiller, an offer con sheaed to Donald Trumps longtime bodyguard of these women and he turned it down. Its unclear where its coming from but remarkable were even having this conversation. Really remarkable pap response from the trump camp on this . Reporter there has not. Shillers lawyers issued a statement decrying what they called selective leaking about this, but no response so far from the white house. Ken, thanks very much. Ken delanian, nbc news intelligence and National Security reporter. On capitol hill, the house ways and Means Committee finished marking their version of the tax cut bill as republicans forge ahead on their effort to overhaul the u. S. Tax code. Changes include keeping the adoption tax credit and final markings do not include a repeal of the obamacare mandate. The senate side, republicans are unveiling their own version of the tax cut plan but more than a few differences between these two dills. With all the changes happening on capitol hill i want to look into the tax rates and deductions that lawmakers are revi reviewing. To start, state and local Tax Deductions known at s. A. L. T. Causing debate. According to the finance Officers Association around 30 use this deduction, particularly suburbs in states like new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, hurt by the removal of his tax break. The senate does, house limits some of the deductions to 10,000 in property taxes. Secondly, medical expenses. Most people who benefit from this deduction make less than 100,000 and are older than 65. Not great for the middle class or the elderly, if you lose the ability to deduct medical expenses. Third, the estate tax. This is the tax you pay on inheritance, only have to pay the estate tax on that portion of what you inherit that is greater than 5. 5 million of your inheriting from one parent. 10. 1 million if youre inheriting it from two parents. This, Different Things they want to do with this in the house and the senate bill, but the only thing you have to know about this, anybody tell you this benefits the middle class, it absolutely doesnt. Trump may be a fan of getting rid of the estate tax, by the way, because his family stands to benefit in a huge way depending how much you think donald trump is worth. Heres the fourth one. The Corporate Tax rate. The trump gop plan would be to drop the Corporate Tax freight 35 statutory rate its at now to 20 its not what most companies pay. Effective rate, average companies pay, 18. 6 . If you dont get rid of a lot of deductions, 35 becomes 18. 6 , how low does 20 become . Talking with congressman davis of illinois. Thank you for being with us. Thanks for having me on, ali. What do you make of this . Two Different Things going on in two different bills. Paul ryan today said, not wrong, this is the way its supposed to work. House passes a bill. Senate pass as bill. Goes to conference. They try to come up with a compromise. Which bill are you in favor of . Im, of course, in favor of the house bill. A bill im going to get to cast 0 vote on. Doesnt mean the bill that was introduced earlier this week and marked up this week in the ways and Means Committee still isnt subject to changes. But the goal is, lets get it across the floor and just like the saturday morning cartoon show years ago, if we pass a bill, Senate Passes a bill, then we work out differences and get one to the president s desk thats really going to be great for the middle class and lower income families in this country. I dont know if great is the thing. Average, 1,082, but massive court tax cuts and massive estate taxes. If youre wealthy, great. Middle class, ah, okay. I disagree wholeheartedly, ali. As a matter of fact, if you ask many families living paycheck to paycheck in my district in central illinois, 1,200 is a big deal. A massive break to allow them to do the things they need to do for their families. We believe reducing deductions and loopholes many are criticized for every time we run a campaign, this is an opportunity to be competitive on the global scale and make sure to put more money in the pockets of families right in the middle class. Talk about trickle down economics. Both treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin and gary cohn, the president s adviser made comments. Do you still believe in trickledown economics . I do. We see the whole trickledown through the economy. Thats good for the economy. Years of learning that this isnt really true, and then recently in kansas, weve tried this. This concept. It doesnt really work. I talked to art laffer about it all the time. Do you really believe trickledown economics works anymore . What i believe is we is actually continue to make Economic Growth even more sustainable than what weve seen just recently in the last few months by making our tax code fair, flatter and simpler. Look, the middle class in this country need to put more money back into their pockets instead of sending it to washington, d. C. , and we close the loopholes incentivizes just answer the question. Lets not talk about this. We know the middle class gets 1,200 out of this thing. I dont i think many of my constituents will get more. We need to make our Business Environment more competitive on the global scale. Were in a much higher tax rating. As a matter of fact, look at some of my democratic colleagues who have hauled companies in before Senate Hearings just a few years ago to talk about companies wanting to use the tax code to invert where theyre going to be based. Were closing those loopholes. Why we should have bipartisan support. Many of the things we get rid of are some of the things democrats in the house and senate have been clamoring for get rid of for years. Now they want to protect them. I will say this to you weve seen it under the reagan administration, in the uk recently. When you lower tax rates on corporations, you dont see any corresponding wage increase in the United States. Thats the bottom line. Theres just no evidence of that actually happening. Tell you what happens. If your company, or wealthy in america and lose the estate tax and lose the amt, get the Corporate Tax rate reduced from 35 to 20 . Absolute gains. No question that happens if one of the bill passes, but if youre middle class you know you get an average 1,200 gain and everything is hope. You hope hope growth hits 3 , hope the Companies Take the savings in taxes and somehow build factories to employ more people and not outsource. If youre middle class in america, this is on a wish and prayer. If youre rich, this is a gift. I dont think so. Mask, y in fact, we must have a different idea what the country will do when we put more money in their pockets and allow them to invest more money in their businesses. Theyll buy more equipment, think manufacturing and congressman, theres no shortage of capital in this country for businesses. Interest rates are as low as ever. Money is everywhere to be had. Companies are not expanding, not because of shortage of capital on tax rates are too high. Companies expand when theres demand. You dont give the people the great la break, you give the companies the break. Companies have a lot of money. Look at the individual tax brackets put forth and we are focusing completely on the middle income and lower income families. Theyll be table to ensure their taxable interest continues to go down, meaning a fair tax code to allow them to put more money in their pockets and participate in their low economies. I believe companies in our main streams will continue to invest, grow in the communities to be able to help create the jobs wes know will be a part of this package once it passes. Put it on the screen.
