A crucial question posed by my colleague, Peter Alexander. Were going to allow the process to move forward, as the facts unfold and we make a determination for ourselves, based on the facts that are presented for us, the United States will determine what the appropriate response might be. Sir, is he did . Is he did . Sir, is Jamal Khashoggi dead . All of this is happening as the president loses white House Counsel don mcgahn, the man who took on several critical roles, including counselor to the president in special counsel Robert Muellers investigation. For the latest, im joined now by nbc newss Peter Alexander at the white house and nbc news chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel in istanbul, turkey. Peter, you put that question to secretary pompeo that you just watched and he was focused quite a bit on saudi arabias leaders, it seemed, and what they wanted to do it. Did he talk at all about his conversation with turkish officials and what do we know . Reporter yeah, he did, not just with turkish officials, but with turkeys president , president erdogan. He said he met with him during his travel there. Said that the president assured him that they are conducting their own investigation right now. He said he met with some of that team of investigators, as well. And he said that the turks told him, told the secretary of state that they would share their results with saudi arabia, as well. He said he believed, according to pompeo, that between those two efforts that they ultimately would have a better, more complete picture, as he described it, of what took place. He said he was looking forward to wrapping that up quickly. But i asked the secretary of state basically why the saudi arabians should be trusted. Heres that exchange from only a couple of hours ago. Were going to allow the process to move forward. Allow the facts to unfold. And as they unfold, and as we make a determination for ourselves about what happened there, based on the facts that are presented to us, the United States will determine what the appropriate response might be. Thank you all for your time today. Sir, is Jamal Khashoggi dead . Sir, is Jamal Khashoggi dead . Reporter at the end of that exchange, you can see me asking him if Jamal Khashoggi is dead right now . Asked him repeatedly. At one point, it appeared we made eye contact, he heard my question, but quickly wrapped up what was a brief set of statements to the press before walking back into the west wing. Kasie . And Richard Engel, the turkish forensic teams searched the consulate in istanbul overnight, but Police Sources are now telling us that they have expanded that investigation to two new locations. What do we know . Reporter so, the turkish officials are absolutely convinced that Jamal Khashoggi is not only dead, but that he was killed by a 15member Saudi Hit Team that went to the consulate, was waiting for khashoggi when he went in to pick up some paperwork. That they trortured him, interrogated him, and then killed him. The question on many peoples minds here is, what happened to the body . After this alleged murder, two chartered aircrafts left the country, only one of them was searched. There has been some speculation [ inaudible ] i think we may have lost Richard Engel there. So, Peter Alexander, i want to go back to you at the white house, if i could. Reporter yeah. Richard was talking there a little bit about the turkish investigation here. Whats the political pressure like on the white house right now to kind of accelerate their response in the face of this . Because this really has been kind of a waitandsee game, and you know, these days are stretching longer. Reporter cakasie, youre right, but its clear as evidenced by what we heard from the secretary of state earlier today that they are going to try to wait and see a little bit longer, hoping if they add a few more days to this whole situation, that may relieve some of the pressure. Not sure that thats going to be the case. We have heard from some members of the senate, including republicans, like bob corker, expressing real frustration that they are not receiving the information they want to receive, in terms of intelligence, what the u. S. Knows, to try to get more details about this. Marco rubios been outspoken in his frustration, as well, saying that the u. S. Needs to be needs to be strong in its reaction to whats taking place there. The white house, though, again, we heard from the president and mike pompeo reiterated it today, basically saying, this is a strong, strategic relationship, it dates back for decades. Were going to let this play out, infect, is what they said. And that appears to be what theyre sticking with right now, with the president about to head out of town. Hes going to be gone for the next several days, including leaving here within the next hour. As soon as were done with this conversation, ill walk over to the south lawn where we hope to see him as he boards marine one before heading off to montana today, where he will be campaigning. So hell be focused on some domestic politics, even as some of this International Political mystery continues. Peter, thanks so much. And keep us posted if he happens to stop by those cameras and chat with you guys on his way out of town. Peter alexander, and richard eng engel, thanks to both of you. President trumps response to Jamal Khashoggis disappearance and reported death has raised new questions about the business relationship between the president and saudi arabia. The president tried to put the issue to rest earlier this week when he tweeted, quote, with for the record, i have no financial interests in saudi arabia or russia for that matter. His son, eric, repeated that point during an appearance on fox news this morning. Theres zero investments in russia. Theres zero investments in saudi. We have absolutely nothing to do with those countries. The president s latest Financial Disclosure form did not list any interests in saudi arabia. But he does have a history of doing business with the kidnapping come. The Associated Press reports that in the 1990s, saudi prince, now fallen out of favor with the government, helped save trump from bankruptcy by buying his yacht for 20 million. A few years later, that prince joined with other investors to buy the plaza hotel in new york city from trump for 325 million. The ap also reports in 2001, the saudi government bought the entire 45th floor of trump world tower, across the street from the united nations, for 12 million. And in 2015, the Washington Post reported that trump had registered eight Shell Companies in saudi arabia. According to the post, they were all dissolved by the end of 2016. And then, theres all the things trump has said himself while out on the campaign trail. Saudi arabia, and i get along great with all of them. They buy apartments from me, buy 40 million, 50 million. Am i supposed to dislike them . I like them very much. The Washington Post also reports the that the saudis have increased their business at trump hotels in washington, with new york city, and chicago since trump became president , hoping to increase revenue at all of those properties. All of this has prompted a group of Democratic Senators to write to the president , demanding that he and his children disclose information about their business ties with saudi arabia. One of them is oregon senator jeff merkley, and he joins us now. Senator, its good to see you. Thanks for taking the time. And do you expect the president and his family to respond to this request . I mean, do you have any tools right now to try and force them to . Well, i think its going to be difficult to get him to respond, for the same reason that he hasnt responded with his taxes over time. He has found that he can just wait it out. Obviously, as he talked about the saudis buying his apartments, theres a lot of connections here that he has not been he has not detailed to the american public. And here we are, in a situation where he continuously is saying, well, now, wait, dont get too upset about this situation with this journalist in the Washington Post. After all, we have all of these wonderful financial and economic ties with saudi arabia. Well, we really need to know the details. After all, the emoluments clause of the constitution is all about having a president who does not have financial conflicts of interest and clearly, President Trump has massive conflicts. Senator, whats your sense of the political will among your republican colleagues in the senate . And if you had any bipartisan conversations about trying to press forward independent of the executive branch, to try to hold saudi arabia accountable for whats happened. Well, there is a lot of bipartisan concern. There is a sense that america is missing on the world stage, on human rights, in general. For example, the president has never said one public word about the genocide in myanmar, which not only killed a lot of people, but drove 700,000 people into bangladesh, but not one word from the president. Now we have a journalist from an american newspaper who apparently has been killed by saudi arabia in a very brazen act and the president s team is continuing to repeat, well, we have all of these important ties with saudi arabia. Theres no sense that theyre pressing strongly. Meanwhile, i hear my colleagues talking about using the various levers we have, the foreign assistance act, the arms export control act, the war powers act. We saw, in fact, 44 members of the senate in a bipartisan fashion support the Sanders Lee Murphy proposal that is related to stopping support for saudi arabias assault on yemen, both stop the fueling of the planes by american planes and stop the intelligence sharing. So already, even before this happened, theres been a lot of concern about saudi behavior in the world and the complicity of the United States. Do you think that theres any chance that congress would step in and try to block this arms deal that the president has kept talking about . Or is that off the table at this point . No, its not off its not off the table. Most of the focus has been on the precisionguided munitions or pgms. There was support for giving pgms to saudi arabia, so they would quit hitting civilian infrastructure in yemen. And then after they were provided, they continued to hit civilian structure in yemen. You have a famine thats affecting millions of people. Its hardly touched the american consciousness, but there are children starving right now in yemen as a result. And the difficulty of getting supplies in through the hudada port has really complicated the situation. So there is significant bipartisan concern about an involving set of issues, regarding saudi arabia, including their habit over decades of supporting basically schools that create terrorist training, that have hurt interNational Security. Senator jeff merkley, thanks very much for your time and for drawing attention to another critical humanitarian disaster. Thank you. Youre welcome. Click or visit a retail store today. Many of north dakotas native american groups have launched a plan to work around a controversial state voter i. D. Law that threatens to keep thousands of potential voters away from the polls come november 6th. Last week, the Supreme Court upheld a state law pushed by a Republican State Legislature that requires north dakotas voters to provide an i. D. That shows a residential address. And it specifically bans a using a p. O. Box. The problem is that many native americans use p. O. Boxes for their mailing addresses, as scotus blog writes, quote, native americans often live on reservations or in other rural areas where people dont have street addresses. Even if they do, lawyers for the challengers argue, those addresses are frequently not included on tribal i. D. S. North dakota ranks as one of the Key Senate Races that could cost current democratic senator her. Na native americans were key in delivering heitkamps last victory back in 2012, before the state law was passed. Joining me now is jamie azure, Turtle Mountain band of chippewa indian tribal chairman. Sir, thank you for being here today. I want to start with the response here, because you have started outlining something of a plan to try to address this on election day. Youve only 19 days left. The Washington Post writes that your officials are going to stand outside, polling stations with laptops with access to rural address software and share a database of voter names. Is this how do you plan on executing this . And is this something that youre working with others to execute . Well, first of all, thanks for having me, and its an honor to be on your program today. Were happy to have you. And we are working with many of our tribal officials, were working with other the other tribes in the states, and were in communication with the state of north dakota, so we want to we want to just make it possible for everybody to have that right to vote. So we will have i. D. Machines and we will have all the information at each poll sites in the Turtle Mountain area. And how many people would you say this is a problem for . I mean, for folks, our viewers who are watching who may not have a sense of what life is like on a reservation, is this a problem that most voters who are in this situation will face or just a handful . How big of a problem is it . Well, we have quite a few that dont have the physical address on their i. D. S, but we are a sovereign nation, so we have a tribal i. D. The tribal i. D. S are the exact same size, weights, and all the requirements of the state i. D. S of north dakota. So now we just need to get the people out and let them know that the physical addresses need to be on the state i. D. S for state elections and we are going to provide every opportunity for our people to come out and let their voices be heard at that National Level and the state level. Has the state secretary of state responded at all to this plan . I mean, do you think youre going to face any additional legal hurdles around these i. D. S being allowed for voting . Well, at this point, we are almost in a reactionary mode. We are scrambling to get everything open. I can officially announce that the Turtle Mountain band of chippewa will be issuing free tribal i. D. S starting today through november 6th. So if theres anything that any ramifications that come of it afterwards, we are trying to take care of it now and well just have to deal with it after the 6th. Jamie azure, thank you very much for your time today, sir. I really appreciate it. Thank you very much. Theres another major issue the president has his mind on, as well. Immigration. Just as his secretary of state, mike pompeo, is scheduled to meet with mexicos outgoing president , President Trump repeated his threats against a large caravan of migrants, make its way from honduras towards the u. S. This morning, trump tweeted, quote, in addition to stopping all payments to these countries, who seem to have almost no control of their population, i must, in the strongest of terms, ask mexico to stop this onslaught. And if unable to do so, i will call up the u. S. Military and close our southern border. Then he went on, threatening to upend his latest trade deal with mexico and canada, saying this issue is, quote, far more important to me, far more important to me as president than trade or the usmca. The parents frustration comes as a surge of migrant parents entering the u. S. With children have reached record levels in the last three months. The president , meanwhile, is scheduled to leave the white house at any moment for his third trip to montana. Hes campaigning for scott rosendale. Why is this race so important .
