Investigation. It shares plenty but keeps a lot hidden. The filing gets into flynns lies to federal agents. The addendum, thats what explains his cooperation. About 60 of it is blacked out. And two other investigations that flynn is cooperating with. This thing says flynn convicted of lying about his interaction with the russia ambassador before Donald Trump Took Office is provided interactions between the Transition Team and russia officials. Flynns, quote, decision to plead guilty and cooperate likely set the decisions of related firsthand witnesses to become forthcoming and cooperate. Heres the thing, gang, nothing that we can see explains two things. Why flynn lied and whether anybody directed him to. Im joined by National Security reporter ken delaney. Ken, you had some time to digest this thing. Popped out at 8 32 last night east coast time. Is there anything to have in this day talook through this and change your view of what we know or what we could learn . I think the thing you just said, the fact that those questions were not answered. Particularly, did donald trump know that mike flynn was going and communicating with the Russian Ambassador and when did he learn that mike flynn lied to the fbi. We know he was asked those questions by the special counsel and he answered them and theyre not in this document or blocked out. What that suggests and all the redactions suggest is that there is a lot more investigating that Robert Mueller is doing. People say this thing is wrapping up may have jumped the gun. A lot of threads to pull on here. As you said, the other major thing that jumped out, they looked like there are three separate investigations referenced here. Two of them appear to be under the special counsel. And one of those may be the obstruction of justice inquiry. That may be one of the things that is blacked out. The third thing is a special counsel investigation and we have no idea what that is. That is the thing that flynn gets the most credit and he gave substantial assistance. So, those are the things that jumped out at me, haley. Roger stone was talking about this. Talking about it with laura engram and somebody else caught in the crosshairs of this investigation and decided to weigh in on mike flynn, general flynn. I want to play if you what stone had to say. Im going to paraphrase for you what he had to say. I think general flynn is a patriot and trying to create some implication that he has testified against the president. We dont know that. We dont know that at all. Nobody knows what exactly is behind the black bars other than Robert Muellers team. Thats absolutely true. When Rudy Giuliani told you last night that he thought there is no way that mike flynn said anything incriminating about the president , he has no way to know that. Mike flynn has been cooperating for a year and it turns out mike flynn and his lawyers didnt leak either. But heres what we do know, the special counsel said in a really telling part of this document, his early cooperation was particularly valuable because he was one of the few people with longterm and firsthand insight regarding events and issues under investigation. Then he said, additionally, the defendants decision to plead guilty likely related firsthand witnesses. That suggests that he was very valuable and, look, we know that mike flynn. You know better than anybody, mike flynn was in the room with donald trump and on the plane with donald trump all through the campaign and transition. He is a person who calmed donald trump. Many hours of conversation because he had strong views about russia. Presumably he would tell the special counsel what Donald Trumps mindset was about russia and potentially lifting sanctions after he took office. Many things directly relevant to this inquiry. As Robert Mueller and his team have so often done or in the time of these memos, kind of coded little easter eggs in these documents and one line in particular that stood out where the memo tooked about flynns military and Public Service as a mitigating factor and senior government leaders should be held to the highest standard. Do you see that as a shot to the white house . Both things. They noted that mike flynn was the only person theyve changed that served in the military. That means a lot, i think xh, coming from Robert Mueller who volunteered for vietnam. The idea that government officials should be held to the highest standards. That is a bob mueller maxiand looking at the Trump Administration that many analysts say are not acting that way. Quite apart from criminal standards. Just the way donald trump behaves every day on twitter. So, yeah, i think that was a really telling passage. One thing that is interesting to me is that the president as far as weve seen him today laid off the twitter as it relates to mike flynn. Little bit on china, but we havent seen that michael cohe tweet storm. I think he has gotten some advice that the Michael Cohen stuff came up to witness tampering, obstruction of justice. We were all waiting for the angry tweets about how flynn had betrayed him. That suggests to me that some lawyers told donald trump that he was on perilous ground criticizing witnesses in a federal investigation in which he is the subject. Ken delaney, i appreciate your perspective and analysis of all this. Thank you. You bet. News out of washington we are also witnessing a cold war flashback today. Russian president Vladimir Putin is threatening an arms race if the u. S. Pulls out of a Nuclear Treaty with moscow. Shorter range nuclear missiles. The u. S. Says russia violated the intermediate range and mike pompeo is giving moscow 6 odays to basically get in line. So, heres the news. In response, putin is denying moscow did anything wrong. A statement says our American Partners apparently believe that the situation has changed to such an extent that the u. S. Should have such weapons, i would like to transmit the message through you to your superiors that if the agreement is broken, our side will respond. So, tough talk from Vladimir Putin there. That is a story line we are watching. We are also watching what will happen when the markets open back up tomorrow morning. After yesterday when those numbers tanked big time and President Trump is now trying to reassure investors that the deal he made with china is real and that it really will be okay. On the heels of his tweet calling him a tariff man and before heading to todays Funeral Service for the 41st president , not to sound naive, i believe president xi meant every word of what he said at our long and historic meeting. All subjects discussed. The reaction not super optimistic, fair to say. Wall street journal board said he belly flopped with that piece. And nbc news team points out this trade tariff standoff with china is a crisis that donald trump created and its a crisis that he ultimately might not be able to solve because he doesnt understand the tariffs mean higher prices for American Business and consumers. Im joined by nbc News White House correspondent kristen welker. The president has layed low ahead of his appearance at the National Cathedral. The one thing he did want to be talking about was this exact issue. China trade. Tweeting about china trade and really trying to change the tone after that tariff man tweet yesterday. In addition to what you read, the president also tweeted very strong signals being sent by china. Once they returned home from their long trips including stops in argentina. You were there at the g20 summit in argentina where President Trump emerged and said they had a deal to keep talking and while that was taking place, they were going to press pause on any new tariffs for 90 days. One reason why you saw the markets respond the way they did yesterday, haley, is because there is so much uncertainty about what was accomplished in the wake of that dinner. What exactly has been agreed to. President trump today really trying to say, hey, look, president xi and i are absolutely on the same page. Trying to get a broader deal here. They have 90 days to do it. The president making it very clear that that clock started ticking basically after that dinner. There was confusion about what that 90day period looked like and that may have also had an impact on the markets. I asked larry cabout this yesterday. He struck a note of optimism and another point of dispute over fentanyl. President xi agreed a controlled substance, meaning those who are selling it here in the United States would be subject to stiff penalties in china. But chinas official statement didnt say that. Larry kudlow yesterday said, look, that is exactly what china agreed to and President Trump reiterated that in his series of tweets today. Strike a note of optimism and, again, its important to underscore this point, nothing has officially been agreed to yet. This is an agreement to keep talking. Kristen welker at the white house for us, great to see you. Thank you, my friend, appreciate it. Today thousands of people gathered at the National Cathedral and lined the streets of washington from capitol hill here to northwest d. C. There to remember through laughter and tears George Herbert walker bush. After a flyover from special air mission 41 and service at houston, he will be buried at his president ial library near his wife, barbara, and daughter, robin. People who loved president bush shared their favorite stories, but you would be forgiven for choking up at this moment when a frez a president and a son shared a tribute. Showed me what it means to be a president to serve with integrity and acts with love in his heart for the citizens of this country. When the history books are written, they will say that george h. W. Bush was a great president of the United States. Through our tears, let us know the blessings of knowing and loving you. A great and noble man. The best father a son or daughter could have. And in our grief, i just smile knowing that dad is hugging robin and holding moms hand, again. More on the emotional service, im joined by nancy the editor at large for times magazine. Im also joined by joe watkins, a former white house aide under george h. W. Bush. We watched it all unfold live here but even watching it back is so emotional. And, joe, you had an opportunity to be there today. Can you tell me what it was like to be inside. Just incredible. You could feel it. People were crying all around me and so moving. It was funny and moving at the same time. Whether it was john meacham or former Prime Minister or alan simpson the former senator from wyoming that was hilarious and also so on point or george w. Bush former president who moved so many of us to tears. And the preacher and the minister who moved jim baker to tears with his words. All your old pals. Everybody was there. Im the only, i was the only white house staffer who worked for dan quayle when he was a senator. So, i knew dan quayle before he was Vice President and then traveled with him a lot. So, i saw dan quayle and we hugged and he called me by my old nickname, a nickname he had for me. Which is . Gorgeous joe. I love that. I dont know why. President bush bringing people together, again. One last time. You mentioned somebody who is a friend of this network here john meacham who we have some interest behind the scenes reporting on part of his eulogy that i want to play for you now, watch. President bush would frequently ask nearly daily, hed ask himself why me. Why was i spared . And in a sense, the rest of his life was a perennial effort to prove himself worthy of his salvation on that distant morning. To him, his life was no longer his own. There were always more missions to undertake, more lives to touch and more love to give. That is john meacham. So beautiful. Beautifully said. Heres the thing, that was beautifully said today and it was beautifully said, according to our colleague willie geist to geor president bush himself. His response was, that is a lot about me. So characteristic of the president , nancy. Exactly. He was always his mothers son who taught him its not about the big i am and aversion first person pronoun and john did an extraordinary job in capturing as a historian and as a friend someone who really understood the role that this president played in american history. We have been having quite a History Lesson since he passed away and certainly today history was there in a really extraordinary pageant when you looked at the veterans of past wars and wars that are ongoing and then you looked at all the members of the Supreme Court and cabinet officials past and present and all the living president s. Together for the first time, ever. You talk about the president s club because we dont see the images of the president s club. By the way, the Vice President s club. That image before we got to the service of the four Vice President s talking together with mike pence. Rivalries, alliances and even true friendship but no relationship like george h. W. Bush and the man who defeated him in 1992. Bush would go so far to suggest more than once he was the father that clinton always left. A notion that clinton did not push back on. No, it started out, obviously, very bitter campaign. So, it took a while for the two of them to move past what happened in 1992. It was their son that brought them together after the asian tsunami where he enlisted his father and president clinton to help with the fundraising and the distribution of funds and the two of them struck up this really unlikely friendship that became so genuine to the point that he was the bush boys referred to as a brother. One of the many things that was extraordinary was realizing that president bush 41 was the actual or figurative father of the three president s who followed. Since neither bill clinton nor barack obama really knew their fathers and looked to president bush for a kind of role model and comfort and solace that he provided to all three of them. Its almost as though some of those president s there were brothers and you saw some of that sibling relationship on display and i have to talk about the candy moment when george w. Bush walked up the aisle and looked like it slipped a piece of candy. It is a club. Talk about the club and how the person on the end there donald trump fits into that club. Im glad he came today. I think it was a big step for him to come and be there. Would he realistically not show up . I dont think he could have not shown up. Im glad he was there and said what he said beforehand and he was consistent with the spirit of the moment which was honoring t George Herbert walker bush. This is about George Herbert walker bush. He did want donald trump to be there and he did want to interact and have his family interact with the trump family and the president for a very special reason. A moment of healing. For one thing, he would never want anything to embarrass or make uncomfortable the sitting president. This is part of the bond amongst all of them and one thing bush 41 learned with bill clinton, seeing president s of different parties together have a real impact on people especially at a time like this. Nancy gibbs, joe watkins, thank you for joining me. Coming up, following the money trail one step closer to an answer at one of the biggest questions of Donald Trumps presidency. After the break, ill be joined by brian, one of the people behind the lawsuit that alleges that donald trump is making money off his office. Youre watching msnbc. So, a new lawsuit from the attorney general of maryland and d. C. Accuses President Trump from profiting. At the heart of the suit the Trump International hotel here in d. C. , just blocks from the white house. Maryland and d. C. Say President Trump is ignoring the constitution by taking money from foreign and state governments any time those officials. To try to find some proof, lawyers have subpoenas targeting a widerange of organizations like Trump International who tel
