Her over the finish line . And dems on offense. Democrats about to take control of powerful committees come january are vowing to investigate the Trump Administration, but the investigations might not just stop there. Will his family also be under strutny . Well look at that in a moment. We start with two breaking news stories on the Mueller Investigation. President trump offered what appeared to be, perhaps, a prebuttle to the eventual muell robert. And cover si is an ally, a former trump adviser roger stone. He says the plea deal is on one count of perjury. Here to wrap it up kristen welker. Lets start with the president. What did he say . A quick backdrop before we get to the president s tweet. Remember, the president submitted answers to Robert Mueller last week. And so his legal time tells me theyre expecting to hear back from mueller perhaps by the end of this week or perhaps before the end of the year. Let me read you the president s tweet given that backdrop. He says when mueller does his final report, will he will covering all of his conflicts of interest in a preamble . Whatever happened to podesta, and will he put in statements from hundreds of people closely involved with my campaign to never met, saw, or spoke to a russian during this period in so Many Campaign workers, people inside from the beginning asked me why they have not been called. They want to be. There was no collusion and mueller knows it. So the president reiterating that familiar phrase there was no collusion, and to your point clearly with the prebuttle there, hes set to argue that Robert Mueller has various conflicts of interest. Muellers team would push back on that characterization. This comes as roger stones associate, jerome corsy says hes been offered a plea deal hes not going to take. They want me to say i willfully lied. I did not intentionally lie to special counsel. Im not going to agree that i lied. I did not. I would rather sit in prison and rot for as long as these thugs want me to. Saying they now say i willfully lied on an amended statement. I did not. At issue here is whether he learned about those hacked emails, John Podestas hacked emails hacked but the russian intelligence. Did he share that information, for example, with roger stone . Was that information shared with the campaign . They deny that ever happened. Bottom line, craig, to all of this, the Mueller Investigation is entering a new phase. We knew it would after the midterms, and we do anticipate there will likely be more indictments, more plea deals and potentially that report that the president was tweeting act today. Kristen welker at the white house where the rain appears to have started. Thank you. President trump also on his twitter megaphone today stoking border tensions. Trump calling on mexico to move migrants back to their countries and once again threatened to close the southern border. Those comments coming a day after Border Patrol agents used tear gas. Hundreds rushed the border. Some used rocks and bolts to assault them and forced a major Border Crossing to shut down for hours. Lets start on the southern border this morning in San Diego County at a port of entry with gaudy schwartz. We also have ceo of vohoo latina. Whats the scene like today, and explain exactly what happened yesterday. Reporter i dont know if you heard that, but that car over there. They stopped right here and said they dont want the hon due rans here. Thats a part of what were hearing from some of the people that live here in tijuana. Other people have been coming out to support the Migrant Caravan. That goes to show you the tension were seeing here in tijuana around this area. The big question is will we see a disruption to the flow of traffic between the United States and mexico again. Im going to give you an overview of the geography of what happened yesterday. Over there where you see the signs, thats how close the Migrant Caravan is. Theyre camping in a neighborhood over there, a Sports Facility about 5,000 and that Migrant Caravan is growing. What happened yesterday was that Migrant Caravan started to move. It came over here trying to get on this bridge. This bridge that were standing on overlooks where people usually come to have their asylum processed, claim heard. Over there, that group of people, even though its pretty early on the west coast, that group of people is already waiting for asylum. Theyre not part of the Migrant Caravan. Usually theres about 150 people on any given day waiting there to be allowed to present themselves for asylum in the United States. What happened yesterday was this Migrant Caravan came on this bridge. They were repelled back by riot police in mexico. They started spilling over into the river. Theres a lot of different fortifications before they get to the port of entry complex. They spilled through here. Down here you have a bunch of police waiting today. Weve seen a lot of the riot helmets and the riot shields at the ready. But at this point theyre kind of just waiting to see whats going to happen. When they made their way past this area, they were able to hit a bunch of other parts of the fences and thats where we understand there were some breaches into the United States. At one point the u. S. Customs and Border Patrol says there were about 40 people an mended on the United States said. Here in Mexico Federal police apprehended about 39 people, Mexican Police say theyre going to be turning those people over to immigration authorities here in mexico. And see if they will be possibly deported back to their country. In the United States obviously there were some issues with tear gas being deployed on the side of the United States. That tear gas blowing over into the mexico side and several people here in mexico experiencing that tear gas. I know those agents, they were defending their use of that tear gas, as i understand it. Is that right . Yeah. Thats right. And weve actually seen videos where members of were not sure if they were members of the caravan. There were a lot of other people who came out during that time. We saw video of several men picking up what looked like rocks and throwing them across over toward where the United StatesBorder Patrol and customs agents were. Thats when the tear gas was deployed. Here in mexico, its unclear who is responsible. Those arrested yesterday by mexican authorities, some of them were mexican nationals. Some of them were hondurans who were members of the caravan. A lot of sorting out to do. The big question today is this going to happen . Is this going to shut down traffic at the busiest port of entry in the world . 90,000 people pass through this border every day. Thank you. Be careful in the overpass, sir. Maria, i know you just came back from el paso, texas where you toured shelters for asylum seekers. What did you learn from the people you spoke with . The individuals coming specifically from honduras are business people. Theyre Small Business owners. Theyre the last wave of hondurans coming and its because they basically say the violence is so steep that the only alternative to save their children, their daughters from prostitution and their sons from Gang Violence is to flee. Its almost counterintuitive. Everyone thinks its the poorest. In the guatemala case, theyre economic refugees. The president decided to close the border yesterday after an injunction by that said that every person who stepped foot on american soil has the right to seek asylum. He prevented them from seeking asylum. Hes breaking International Law that the United States crafted with the u. N. And set the world order to follow. So what he did yesterday was not small by any means. Peter baker, i want to read for the viewers and listeners on satellite radio the president s full Statement Today after sundays events. Mexico should move the flag waving migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals back to their countries. Do it by plus, bus, any way you want, but they are not coming into the u. S. We will close the border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the wall. This is not a message that helped the president save the house. What was his take away on immigration, peter baker, after the midterm defeats . He still thinks its an important issue for him. He thinks its one of the reasons why managed to keep the losses from being worse than they were. Its a matter of politics. Its not like hes given up on this as a salient issue for his core supporters. I think the white house is looking at the images emerge from the border yesterday as validation. Proof that they were right. That there is, in fact, attempt on the part of the hundreds or whatever migrants to actually get into the United States through something other than the legal process. So theyll use these images to buttress their case. Whats also interesting is, of course, it shows the Border Patrol is at the border able to handle this. Its what they do. And the military that was sent down there is not, in fact, doing what i think a lot of americans would have imagined it would be doing if the once the president said he was doing. Theyre standing back for support roles. Theyre not under the law supposed to be doing what the Border Patrol is doing. Over the weekend, peter, we saw the president turn this call to troops into a bit of an airing of grievances on thanksgiving about federal judges, immigration, his agenda. He also said troops may use lethal force. Youve previously written that he, quote, struggles to master the role of military commander. Why is that . Well, hes not the first president who didnt serve in the military, but he is in this interesting position where he basically seems to revere the military commanders. He puts generals in civilian positions like the defense secretary and ambassador positions. And yet, at the same time, he doesnt seem to have a familiarity or Comfort Level with the kind of things that normally come with a commander chief that would be understanding the role of military at the border. That would be visiting troops in afghanistan or iraq which we has not done almost two years into office. That would be going to Arlington National cemetery on veterans day. Those types of things have caused him backlash among some veterans of the uniform, and i think his continued quarrels with people like mccraven have also caused him to lose some support among military folks who otherwise are happy with this administration because they provided a budget increase since he took office. Peter baker, thank you. Thank you all. Just into the news room, General Motors plans to cut about 15 of the work force in north america. The New York Stock Exchange actually halted trading of the stock as a result briefly. It has resumed. The closing plants are in detroit, ohio, michigan, maryland, theres one in canada as well. The ohio facility is just outside youngstown in the northeast. In july of last year President Trump visited youngstown and told an audience that the area jobs were, quote, all coming back. Gm shares, we should point out here right now, those shares up about 6 this morning. A bigger picture. I think weve got the dow board here. The Dow Jones Industrial average up more than 300. Again, shares of gm up on that news. Dems on offense. When it comes to investigating the president , whether to use restraint or brute force. Also all about the base. For the first time in the trump era democrats are poised to have some power, and they have big plans to get answers from the white house. They say they want to protect Robert Muellers investigation and look into potential ties between trump businesses and russia. And it may not just be the president under the microscope. The New York Times reporting its not just trump inHouse Democrats crossing hairs. His family is too. Msnbcs Garrett Haake is on capitol hill for us on this monday. So what can we expect . Were hearing the democrats are going to be exercising some restraint but now youve got the times report indicating the democrats may be looking at some of the president s family members. How do we square the two . Craig, its actually, i think broader than just the president s family members. There are other committees here on the house side who want to go after various cabinet members of the Trump Administration. There are democrats who have been champ ageing at the bit toe investigative steps they have not been able to take under a republicancontrolled congress. Democratic leadership has been cautioning members to hold their horses and not get too far out in front with too many subpoenas too fast and look like theyre just coming for a pound of flesh from the Trump Administration. I think what were going to see first is a continuation of investigations that have already been doing where democrats think republicans have not gone far enough into looking into the president s actions, pl particuy on the security side. They need to know whether test obstructing justice and having the effect of obstructing justice. Whether there was a discussion, deal, bargain arrangement, understanding. Democrats see that investigation as a continuation of the russia investigation that was already going on. Another incoming house chairman is one of the people cautioning democrats and voters who want to see a more robust investigation of the Trump Administration, that this sort of thing has to be done strategically. Hes elijah cummings. Were going to be careful. I dont think people to think the first day i walk in were going to have 38 subpoenas going out the door. Not doing to do that. Were going to do it carefully and make sure its done with integrity. Reporter a managing of expectations. Make no mistake House Democrats in many cases won in cleaning of washington. I think well see this broad scope of investigations into different elements of the Trump Administration beginning almost immediately. Elijah cummings had a busy weekend. Hes going to be a busy man the next two years. And he married someone over the weekend as well. Big weekend. Retiring republican congressman trey gowdy threw out an idea about possible testimony from james comey on the hill. Comey tweeting on thanksgiving in part, got a subpoena from House Republicans. Im still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions, but i will resist a closed door thing because ive seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Lets have a hearing and invite everyone to say. Gowdy says the hearing should not be public but videotaped and released. Whats the difference between the two . Reporter theres a couple different things. First, House Republicans know this is their last chance to go after a perceived enemy of the president in james comey and the former attorney general loretta lynch. They want to get them back here and ask more questions while they have the authority to do so on their own. The idea of a closed door hearing, weve see
