Your ballot back by mail and are voting absentee, at this point you should drop that ballot off in person. Really the theme of the day is florida. Both candidates in the same city today, tampa. In just a few moments well dig into new nbc news polling that might explain why. While the campaigns focus on florida, florida, florida, it is hard to ignore, as President Trump puts it, covid, covid, covid. The reality, our country reported more than 80,000 new cases wednesday alone. That is, once again, a new record. Lets dive right into the focus on florida today. Monica alba is in tampa ahead of President Trumps rally. Mike memoli in coke cut creek in allimportant Broward County. Mike following the Biden Campaigns swingthrough state. Steve kornacki standing by at his trusty big board. Before we check in and get the latest on the campaigns in the ground, lets get a lay of the land. Walk us through this new nbc news poll of allimportant florida. Craig, obviously the headline here, biden 51, trump 47 in florida. Obviously the margin of error here is four, so it remains a very tight race in florida. Of course, you already knew that. Every four years its a very tight race in florida. Every four years it seems it comes down to just a few votes. We certainly seem on track for Something Like that in florida. Obviously this is a pivotal state, particularly when you look at the president when you look at those roadto 270 scenarios. Its very hard to find a path for reelection for the president that doesnt involve winning florida. This one obviously crucial. What is going on that gives joe biden the advantage right now . Here is a big shift were seeing in this poll from 2016, Senior Citizen voters. Donald trump won them by 17 points in florida in 2016. Big reason he got the Sunshine State in 2016. In our new poll, look at this. Look at that reversal from trump plus 17 in the 2016 election, biden with the lead with seniors. Weve been seeing this a while. Thats a hugely significant shift. Thats why biden is up in the poll. You might say, with a shift that big, why isnt biden up more in florida . Why is the margin only four . Theres a reason for that. Latino voters in florida, also very big constituency. Clinton won them by 27 in 2016. Biden is leading in a telemundo poll, only five, bidens lead. Whats the shift all about there . Very specific. Cuban American Voters, think of south florida, Miamidade County. Among cuban American Voters massive trump advantage theyre finding in the telemundo poll. Among pouerto rican voters, a bg part of the constituency, biden enjoying the advantage. Cuban American Voters in florida, a long history going back a ways of that being a very republican constituency. Drum did not get the traditional republican advantage among cuban American Voters in 2016. This is a big group of voters in florida the polling is suggesting hes made gains with since becoming president. Youve got two things happening, biden making gains with Senior Citizens, but trump making gains with cuban American Voters in florida. It results in biden leads in the poll, but slightly very competitive race. Steve, two questions here. The top line, biden being up by four points, is that inside or outside the margin of error, and how does this snapshot in florida compare to previous snapshots over the last few weeks . Is this a lead for mr. Biden that seems to be stable, is it widening, narrowing . The last time we took an nbc maris poll it was dead even, 4848, to 5147. Always read the fine print. Margin of error of four points. When you see 5147 with a margin of error of 4. 5 points by the way, every other poll in florida right now showing one point this way, two points that way, it really does suggest this is a very competitive race in florida. All right. Our man Steve Kornacki there digging through those numbers. Monica alba, as steve laid out there, a tight fight in florida. Whats the Trump Campaign doing today to try and eke out a win in five days . Reporter its those very important latino voters that steve was referring to that the president is going to try to make a pitch to here in tampa, florida. The Trump Campaign has poured a lot of time and emergency into reaching out and appealing to them specifically here in this state. Its also the place where the president has spent the most time in the last couple of weeks since he recovered from the coronavirus. It was his first stop and his first return to the rally trail when he did that. Its a place he will absolutely return to before tuesday, if not once, maybe twice. Its his adopted home state, craig. I can also tell you, theyre going to be touting the economy and the gdp numbers extensively. Already in the pre grm we have montages cut together with the Trump Campaign and reelect effort pointing to the perceived gains on the economy and those promises. That will be a centerpiece of his message here today. After hes in florida, hes going to head to North Carolina. Thats another state that, if he doesnt win florida, if he doesnt win North Carolina, the path to 270 doesnt really exist. He needs to eke out a win here, and in North Carolina and really his campaign is feeling most optimistic at this moment about pennsylvania. Thats why youre going to see him concentrate his time in those three final states in these closing days. Hes going to have 11 stops in the final 48 hours before election day, craig, with advisers telling us the reason is they think his projection of energy and enthusiasm, making all these trips, could help him up his percentage point. Of course, the backdrop to all of this continues to be the coronavirus pandemic. Cases are high here in florida. Restrictions statewide have been lessened in the last few weeks. By my count and view here, very few people are wearing masks. Thousands are expected to gather on the fairgrounds here outside of the bucs stadium in tampa. The Biden Campaign frequently refers to those rallies as super spreader events. Mike, walk us through, take us through what youre hearing with the Biden Campaign. Reporter in contrast to what monica is talk about, every once in a while youll see the cars driving behind me as they fill up a parking lot for another drivein rally. This is the way the Biden Campaign has been conducting their public events, socially distant and fully compliant with local health restrictions. If you want a sense of how a democrat wins florida, if they do win florida, you can see it in bidens schedule today. First coming here to Broward County, the second most populous in the state. Hillary clinton won more than 500,000 votes here out of 4. 5 million statewide. You have to absolutely run up the score here in order to offset what was the surprising strength in 2016 that we saw among President Trump in those rural counties. So biden coming here, also neighboring Miamidade County where the latino vote is so critical. On the heels of his trip down here, the Biden Campaign announcing on his first day in office if elected, joe biden would sign an executive order to try to create a task force to focus on rejune 9thing those 500 families separated at the border. Immigration such a critical issue to latino voters. Then hes heading up to where monica was in tampa. We talk about turning out the base here, in south florida youve got to get the swing voters up along that i4 corridor. Thats where biden will head next. Biden spent two days, most of them in his home state of delaware, not a swing state. That will change now in the days ahead. After he leaves florida today, hell be both in iowa and wisconsin tomorrow. Then he heads to michigan on saturday. You want to know why, how the Biden Campaign thinks about michigan . That will be the first time we see joe Biden Campaign together with his former running mate, former president barack obama. We expect several veents of those two in michigan on saturday as they kick off that final sprint to election day, craig. Mike, really quickly while i have you, the Vice President making news this morning about a task force he would appoint if elected. What more can you tell us about that . Reporter that, as i mentioned, is part of the appeal to the latino vote. We saw the former Vice President in that last debate hammer the president over his child separation policy. The questions especially prompted by jacob soboroff, Julie Ainsley and others about the separated families at the border, biden offering concrete steps beyond his broader immigration policy for taking and addressing that issue head on, craig. All right, mike memoli there for us in coconut creek. Thank you. Monica alba there in tampa, thank you as well. This morning, the number of Coronavirus Infections and hospital stays are ticking up to astounding new levels. Here are the latest facts on the pandemic. 80,000 new cases reported wednesday. Thats another record high. The third time in a week that weve set a new single day record. The most cases in the last week have come from the state of illinois. The number of patients being treated in hospitals has climbed 46 from a month ago, and that is raising fears that more hospitals across the country could soon reach capacity. But there is some encouraging news when it comes to treatment this morning. Regeneron says its antibody cocktail trial is showing a significant reduction in medical visits in patients with covid19. This is the same experimental treatment cocktail that President Trump received earlier this month. Im joined by dr. Vin gupta, a pulmonologist, an msnbc medical contributor, hes a Global Health policy expert. Dr. Gupta, lets start with regeneral john. We heard a lot about it over the past month or so. How promising is this news . Good morning, craig. Always good to see you. Its promising, theres no doubt about it. Whats the upshot . The upshot is who gets access to it and how quickly can they ramp production. What youre hearing from the president is that this is going to be free for all. Lets be clear, these Monoclonal Antibody cocktails, whatever you want to call them, they are most effective in the individual thats walking well, craig. Meaning theyre asymptomatic but have a diagnosis of covid19. Thats a lot of people. If were saying that this therapy is most effective early on for those walking well, a lot of people will want this, deservedly so, this intervention. Its expensive. We know its supply constrained. So were going to have to think about equity in distribution just like we think about the vaccine, but its going to be even much more of a difficult conversation because theres not nearly enough of these vials, this therapeutic that will be available when we need et most in the coming months. Lets talk about the number at the bottom of the screen. 80,000 new cases in one day. What can we make of that . Is this, again, as the administration has asserted, is this a result of simply more testing . No. Let me strongly push back on that, craig. What we know here, and this is not my opinion, your viewers can go to covid tracking project and see the data for yourself. Daily tests have plateaued but case numbers have skyrocketed. That shows theres community transmission. This is an outbreak out of control. Hospitalizations and icu capabilities are being stretched across the country. We still have inperson schooling. We know the environment is playing a big role in transmission. Colder, drier air, thats what respiratory viruss like covid love. This is a really concerning situation. We cant mitigate it. The president shouldnt talk about how this is just about increased testing. Thats not the case at all. Dr. Gupta, were seeing lockdowns in germany and france, from partial to pretty much fullblown lockdowns. From the beginning of this pandemic, weve been a few weeks behind europe. Do you think thats where were headed once again in this country, pretty much a full lockdown . I want to be careful about lockdowns. Unfortunately as some of our elected leaders like to fear monger. Do i think indoor dining, do i think inperson schooling are likely were going to have to reconsider those particular parts of society in the midst of an out of control pandemic . Yes, i do. Right mao the only way you can safely open schools is on site testing. Unless youre an affluent school district, you dont have access to it right now. Indoor dining, we know its needless. Thats been a source of spread of this virus. I do think certain parts of society that are currently open will likely have to close down for a period of time as this outbreak continues to worsen, especially in places like illinois where leadership has already taken the step of doing these things. I think were going to have to reconsider strategic lockdowns . Do i think a whole scale society lockdown needs to happen . No, i think we have to look at science and the facts. Dr. Gupta, thank you. Were following breaking news this morning. Right now folks along the louisiana coastline once again getting a glimpse of another hurricane. This time its the aftermath of hurricane zeta. That storm hammered the shoreline as a category 2 storm. The surge also hit parts of alabama and mississippi. So far at least three people have been killed. And zeta is now making its way towards the northeast. Its weakened a bit. Its now a tropical storm. Nbcs Morgan Chesky is in Saint Bernard parish about 45 miles southeast of new orleans. What are you seeing there this morning . Reporter craig, its going to be a tough day for a lot of people here. Saint bernard parish always a vulnerable area for these gulf hurricanes because its outside only of the protections the city of new orleans has. We talk about this being a category 2 hurricane, onemileanhour shy of being upgraded to a category 3. Those 100mileperhour winds more than capable of tearing off a roof of a nearby business and tossing it onto this bakery here, damaging it significantly in the process. The owner of the baker inside trying to clean up as best he can. Thats really going to be what today is consisting of for so many people around this area. We know if there is any Silver Lining here, craig, this was a fastmoving hurricane when it struck the louisiana coastline. It was moving at more than 20 miles an hour. It hard hard but cleared through this area. Because of that, it has allowed resources, Recovery Help efforts to get into place and help some of these people out who need it. For those others, theyre having to go through this and start to pick up the pieces. One of the big problems here that initially new orleans was afraid of would have been that storm surge, but it ended up being more of a windrelated problem here. Thats why were hearing about a half Million People in louisiana without power right now. In all other states that total is coming close to a Million People here. So this was the strongest hurricane to hit the state of louisiana this late in the season, and people are now just crossing their fingers, craig. Weve got another month to go. They certainly dont want to have to go through this yet again. Craig. All right, Morgan Chesky in Saint Bernard parish. Be careful. Looks likes theres some downed lines of some sort near you.
