MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Craig Melvin December 8, 2020

Good morning. Im Chris Jansing in for craig melvin. The word of the day is vaccine. Just seconds ago we received the important first analysis of phase three human trials for the vaccine by oxford and astrazeneca, and the news is positive. That comes on the heels of a 90yearold grandmother in the United Kingdom to become the first to receive a clinically approved vaccine from pfizer, 334 days after the first reported covid death in china. The name of the second person and first man to get the vaccine, william shakespeare. Yes, you heard that right. Here are the facts on the pandemic at this hour. It is being dubbed v day in the uk. The country has kicked off what will be an unprecedented Global Vaccination Campaign including the largest ever attempted by the uks publicly funded National Health service. Moments ago results from a pier review of astrazeneca and oxford vaccine, showing efficacy of around 70 . The conclusion about the twodose regimen, tested by over 11,000 volunteers, results suggest its safe and it works. Here at the home the fda is giving its first analysis of pfizers vaccine, saying it offers strong protection days after the first dose. That vaccine has a 95 efficacy rate, and it could be approved by the frktsda for distribution aserly as the end of this week. Dialing up the urgency for a vaccine, our country just passed 15 million confirmed covid19 cases. It took us just five days to add 1 million cases to our total. But lets start with that Major Development in the united kingd kingdom. The first doses have been administer, kicking off what will be a Massive International immunization effort. Nbcs Richard Engel is in covington, england, where an almost 91yearold grandmother got the first dose. Tell us more about the vaccine rollout there and what are the main takeaways for our country as well. Reporter so were talking about margaret keenan, maggie to friends. Shell be 91 next week. She worked as an assistant in a Jewelry Store up until just four years ago, and she is now, as they call her here, patient a, the first person to receive a clinically approved and tested vaccine. Shes doing well. So she came in. She was given the vaccine. I spoke to the nurse who administered the shot. She said that she didnt even really notice the injection. Had no pain. No side effects. Has gone home and is still feeling well. A little bit surprised and overwhelmed by all the attention, but thats understandable and normal. Physically shes doing great. This is an important state in the United Kingdom in the history of the pandemic. Theyre calling it v day here for vaccine its very evocative of vj day of the districtries during world war ii. Thats the way this country is presenting it, that this is a battle, ha the counteroffensive has begun and it began at this hospital. Thats what it means for the country and what countries potentially could benefit or learn from this experience. On an individual level, it also has profound significance. I spoke to another nurse. Today it was mostly the elderly and those who care for them getting the vaccines. This nurse i spoke to, right after she had gotten the shot, has severe asthma. Because of her delicate health, she has been sheltering for almost the entire pandemic. She hasnt been able to come to work or go outside her home. She has a small back garden and shes been confined to it. I spoke to her. I said what does todays vaccine mean for her, and she said its giving her her life back. I have the flu vaccination every year. So the alternative to me is worse. I didnt have any problems with the vaccination. Do you have any message for people out there who might be skeptical or nervous or watching this whole process today and wondering what its all about . Go ahead and have it. Its about safety of yourself, but also your loved ones and family and the rest of the world. Its a way forward. Reporter chris, this is not a massive, fastmoving vaccination program. Today was the first day. It began at 6 30 in the morning with patient alpha, patient a. But at this hospital theyre already wrapping up for the day. They only did 100 patients. Theyre hoping the do 400 patients a difficult starting next week. Being the first day, they wanted to make sure they had it right and it went smoothly. The vaccine from pfizer is difficult to handled. It has to be stored in these super cold temperatures weve been talking a lot about. It matters. What it means is they had to be bringing patients to the hospital instead of, at least for now, pushing the vaccine out into peoples homes or smaller care centers. Thats the next phase. But phase one today, so far, so good. Boy, is that good news. Richard engel, thank you so much, from coventry. I want to turn to dr. Vin gupta, assistant professor at the institute for Health Metrics and evaluation and an msnbc medical contributor. Ive got to tell you, doctor, its always great to talk to you, but can we just take a moment here so often when we have these conversations, theyre all downers. The first confirmed cases of covid19 here and in the uk were late january. Here we are in december and we have a vaccine. How remarkable is that and how important . Good morning. Its extraordinary. It should give us all hope that even though there are warnings for the next few months, lets focus on the positive, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we can all hang our hats on that. Thats vital. What youre seeing here stateside is that the Advisory Committee on vaccines is convening to discuss the Pfizer Vaccine. That is going live today in the uk. Assuredly, based on the briefing documents that the fda has provided, it would be a big shot if an eua emergency use authorization was not actually provided after this meeting, because what we do know of the Pfizer Vaccine is its broadly effective across age groups. It prevents something called severe pneumonia from covid19. So that really sick state that causes people to see me and my colleagues in the icu, it seems like its effective at preventing that, especially in older individuals, chris. Lastly and critically, at least on the two months of data that we do have studying this vaccine, it doesnt look like there are any serious adverse events, maybe ridness and pain at the injection site at most for a few days, but if thats the worst of it, thats no different than any other shot that our children would get on an annual basis. Its really, really good news. And its remarkably effective even pretty quickly after just the first dose, right . Thats what the data suggests. The key piece here, it looks like you still need that second dose 28 days later. Its going to be important to get that second dose for longlasting immunity. How long youre actually protected for is the big open question. We have these studies at pfizer and moderna and other companies and they will continue. Well have a sense, as were ramping up immunizations in the world, how long theyre actually being producted for. Well have some lead time and understanding of how effective and long lasting these vaccines truly are to guide potentially a reimmunization effort if one is needed down the road. So assuming everything goes, as you suggest its expected to, and they approve in a couple of days, the lions share of people getting the vaccine wont get it until next year, 2021. That is, of course, when the pandemic is expected to reach new heights after the holiday season. I want to read you something from a story in tthe New York Times this morning, im quoting. A vaccine is like a fire hose. A vaccine thats 95 effective is a powerful fire hose. But the size of a fire is still a bigger determination of how much destruction occurs. It goes on to say, no vaccine can eliminate a pandemic immediately just as no fire hose can put out a forest fire. So give us a reality check. Even with the bestcase scenario that everyone could get a vaccine by late spring or mid summer, does that mean life immediately returns to normal . No, it doesnt. So, first of all, we need a certain percent of the population to consent to immunization. We think at least 70 . That will take time. Just because your get your shot and your second shot, doesnt mean you can stop wearing a mask and those things immediately after. This will take time. Well need everybody ideally to do it. Its going to take time on the back end to make sure enough time has elapsed between the second dose when youre truly protected. Thats one. Number two, lets be clear, any Vaccination Campaign isnt really going to ramp up until early april at the earliest for the general population, meaning that the worse is it of the pandemic is in front of us, we or worried inspite of the vaccination starting during that time, well lose over 500,000 americans in total. Thats why its vital that you dont travel, everything we talk about is top of mind while we look at relief ahead. Stay the course, wear your masks, stay home, wash your hands, all that stuff. Dr. Vin gupta, thank you so much. Youre going to stay with me. The doctor is going to be answering some of your questions about the coronavirus later this hour. You can tweet them to us with msnbcanswers, or send us an email to talk msnbc. Com. So thats coming up in this hour. Meantime, in a matter of hours, well see kind of a split screen moment as the current and incoming administrations lay out their vaccine plans. President trump is hosting a vaccine summit at the white house and president elect biden will formally unveil his health team that will ultimately be responsible for making sure americans get the vaccine. Nbcs monica alba is covering the white house, and mike memoli is covering the biden transition from wilmington, delaware. Good morning to both of you. Monica, youre reporting the white house did not invite anyone from the Biden Transition Team to this summit, and a couple of other notable absences. Representatives from the two leading vaccine makers, pfizer and moderna. What do we know about that . Reporter on your first point, chris, that seems to be completely intentional. This is a president who wants to take full credit for the Vaccine Development so far. Operation warp speed which, of course, was created under his watch during his administration, and he wants to take a victory lap, we understand, even though the game is not completely over to tout just how fast theyve been able to make these developments, though it hasnt been completely approved. Theres a lot of questions about the timing of todays summit at the mouse given that fda approval is scheduled for the next couple days. The other notable absences, those drugmakers. We do know the white house originally invited pfizer and moderna, representatives from both, to attend todays event, a multihour summit, several panels with different executives and experts. Then it was determined that because one of those experts, the fdas dr. Peter marks, who plays a pivotal role in the green lighting of the vaccines was going to be speaking, the Drug Companies thought it wouldnt be appropriate and the white house agreed, for them to be appearing there, since there could be a conflict of interest. They want to steer clear of that. They wont be there. A couple of other people who wont be in the room, dr. Anthony fauci. He has a scheduling conflict. He has repeatedly praised operation warp speed. Were waiting to see what other members of the task force may be there. This is an opportunity for the president , who is afraid his successor joe biden, is going to get a bulk of the kudos since hes going to have to oversee the Distribution Process when he takes office next month, hes very concerned about that. And we know that because he has said it wasnt joe biden who did anything on the vaccines, it was all me, me, me. That seems to be his focus today here at the white house, chris. Okay, mike. We know the key players on bidens health Team Including californias attorney general javier becerra, nominated to be the secretary of health and human services. Beyond the formal announcement, how much are we expected to learn . Will we talk about where they are and how ready they have to pick things up given the time that we have between now and Inauguration Day . Reporter chris, one of the recurring messages weve seen as the president elect has begun on a weekly basis rolling out members of his cabinet and his administration is help is on the way. Thats a particularly interesting message to here today, as you mentioned, where we see the split screen moment of the outgoing and incoming administration, the biden team being the one thats going to ultimately bear the responsibility forgetting this vaccine out and tackling the pandemic once and for all. Another recurring theme that weve heard in these announcements is the highlighting of the personal stories of the nominees and the appointees that biden will be introducing today. We certainly have seen with the announcements yesterday the message from the biden team that this is a team that looks like america. Weve been focusing primarily on xavier ba says raecerbecerra. Dr. Smith is an appointment to an equity board for covid19 response. Thats going to be a particular focus on the biden team. As we know, this pandemic has hit black and brown communities disproportionately hard. The rates of infection and aftereffects have been much more pronounced in communities of color. As for the road ahead, we should expect to hear biden again pushing congress to act on Economic Relief for americans and also looking ahead to that meeting that we know expect on thursday, moncef slaoui, the head of operation warp speed again confirming today he will be meeting with members of bidens team on thursday. This is a meeting from the biden Team Perspective should have already happened. Theres been great frustration about getting into the weeds on what their Vaccine Distribution plan is and they want more details on that sooner rather than later so they can have that plan ready on january 20th, chris. Mike memoli, monica alba, thanks to both of you. Coming up, ill talk to an icu nurse who got coronavirus, went back to work and got completely burned out by the job. What led her to the breaking point and why shes begging congress for a relief bill. Plus, well get an update from capitol hill on whether we are closer to meaningful help being on the way. First, california restaurants, of course, were already struggling before the new lockdowns. Well look at wha theyre doing to try to stay open now. Thats next. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. And now with q4 wrapping up, the north pole has to be feeling the heat. Its okay santa, lets workflow it. Workflow it. . With the now platform, we can catch problems before customers even know theyre problems. Wait. A hose . What kid wants a hose . fireman . Says hose it says horse not a hose cedric get over here now our people can collaborate across silos, from across the globe. So hows the new place . Its a 4 bed, 2. 5 bath igloo. Its great yeah, but you have to live in the south pole. Sir. Wait, are you sure . Yes, were that productive now. You hear that . the kids get twice the presents [ cheering ] about time 2020 gave us some good news. Whatever your business is facing. Lets workflow it. Servicenow. Oh my gosh you made it did you put some ah, kale in the greens . We didnt forget about you welcome to the family. Thank you. Wooooow. Right now as nearly one in every ten californians testing for covid are positive, more lockdowns are in place. That means restaurants dealing with another round of restrictions are again laying people off, cutting service, cutting hours. Nbcs jo ling kent is live in los angeles for us. I know you spoke with a Restaurant Owner who now, like so many Restaurant Owners around the country, is only offering takeout and delivery. What are you hearing about how difficult it is as this goes on longer just to stay afloat . Reporter chris, the words i keep hearing are depressing, demoralizing, the future feels impossible for so many restaurants. Were in studio city, california. Behind me is the tuning fork, a popular restaurant in this neighborhood. This is a restaurant that has really thrived on being able to welcome the community in until covid hit, of course. What they did, the owner joseph stole me, they converted this area recently, this Outdoor Dining area. Youll remember just a few days ago that was shut down. In fact, this area here, joseph is telling me, he was able to get it together for about five days and offer this to the public until everything was shut down by these regional stayathome orders. Here is what he had to say. Techl rare Outdoor Dining set up that went into the street we were able to utilizes for exactly five days before the new restrictions went into effect. Most people are starting to realize how important their neighbors businesses are and how important the pub is to the community. These are the backbones of why were here. We dont really want to have a huge corporate america, do we . I dont think people do. That would be the tragic end to an already tragic situation. Reporter the owner of the tuning fork telling me that they need congressional aid just to get through early next year. Right now there is no concrete plan to do so and as a result hes had to lay off all of his servers, chris, for the second time. This comes as earlier in the fall we know 100,000 restaurants are closed nationwide. A third of all Small Businesses around our country may not survive through january. The numbers are devastating, but his story so representative of how Small Businesses feel theyre caught. They believe they can operate safely outside. Joseph saying, of course, well comply with all the measures. Not every restaurant is saying they want to do that, but certainly a ton of pain and a lot of uncertainty about their lifes work, chris. Heartbreaking. I used to live in studio city. Hes right. The locally owned restaurants, the boutiques, the nonchain places gave it its character. Jo ling kent, thank you for that. As businesses await a new round of relief, wu just got new information on that potential bipartisan r
