That dn krrc hack. Now the head of Hillary Clintons campaign is ripping into the fbi, calling for an official investigation. While ivanka, shes at work. The future first daughter already calling members of congress, pushing her child care agenda. The big question is, what will her role really be . And a guilty verdict. Dylann roof convicted on all 33 counts, including murder. A cathartic moment for those victims. Thought he was starting a race war. Look what love conquered. Now the dramatic Death Penalty phase begins and dylann roof could act as his own lawyer. Plus, getting real about fake news. Facebook announces a new program to flag fake stories, but will it actually work . Were going to begin this morning with president obama. Hes talking tough against russia, calling on republicans and democrats to stand up to Vladimir Putin and vowing to strike back. Heres what he said on npr. When any Foreign Government tries to impact the integrity of our elections, that we need to take action. Some of it may be explicit and publicized. Some of it may not be. But the president admitted that he has no way of knowing whether donald trump will follow through on plans to fight back if they stretch beyond january 20th. Guess what. We have a great team with me today. Were going to break it all down. I want to start with Chris Jansing. She joins me now from d. C. Chris, does it sound like the president and the president elect are on the same page here . Because im going to take a leap and say no. I think your leap is going to land you on firm footing there, stephanie. Theres an open riff now between the incoming and outgoing administration. Theres no doubt about that. Lets start with the whole idea that donald trump for a long time had basically denied that russia, we knew russia had anything to do with these hacks. Now look what he tweeted just this morning. Are we talking about the same cyberattack where it was revealed the head of the dnc illegally gave hillary the questions to the debate . And then you have josh earnest yesterday, somebody who is usually pretty reserved behind that podium. He basically said that obviously, mr. Trump knew that russia was engaged in this cyber activity. He called it malicious cyb cyber activity that was helping him, hurting Hillary Clintons campaign. A onetwo punch with the president then coming out on npr. The question now, what will the president do . Economic sanctions . Nbc has reported that inte that putin controls about 85 billion worth of assets through various entities that hes in charge of. Will it be something a little qui quieter, some sort of response in cyber space. We should learn more with the president holding his annual end of Year Press Conference this afternoon. To your point of who knew, john podesta is really going after the fbi. I want to share a quote, comparing the fbis massive response to the overblown email scandal with seemingly lackadaisical response to a very real russian plot to subvert a National Election shows that something is deeply broken at the fbi. Hes basically saying its the fbis fault that clinton lost, but if you dig into the New York Times reporting, john podesta, the dnc, the white house, they didnt take it seriously enough. Well, theres a lot of criticism, at least some of it behind the scenes from democrats who think that the president should have acted sooner. And the official white house response, as you know, stephanie, is he didnt want to be seen as meddling in this and he had a private conversation with Vladimir Putin at a Big International meeting. Having said that, its no secret what the Clinton Campaign believes happened in this election. Remember that harvard session between the obama folks and the trump folks that got really loud and out of control and basically, you know, robby mook and jen palmieri at harvard talking about how if comey had not released the email information that he had, if he had not gone back and said were going to check this out again, the outcome of the election would have been something different. So this in many ways is just an extension of what we have been hearing from the Clinton Campaign since their loss in november. Thanks, chris. I want to broaden out the conversation and bring in msnbc political analyst and former rnc chairman michael steele. Also with me, kasie hunt. Good morning, michael. I want to start with kasie. President obama, hes going to strike back. Hes already spoken to Vladimir Putin. What could he really do . Were talking about putin, a guy who not just controlled russia. This guy controls 85 billion worth of assets. Some have said hes the most dangerous man in the world. What could president obama actually do . Well, we do know that the president is already talking to npr ahead of the press conference hes doing, essentially saying the United States is going to strike back at the russians at a time and place of our choosing. The president s words. I think the question is whether he goes after putin personally. And specifically his financial assets. We know that the russian president has a network of financial assets. Theres speculation over where they might be stored and question about what the United States could do to go after that network. Theres a difference between the president himself and his associated, the russian president and his associates. The United States to a certain extent has to made a decision, how personal, how much do they want to escalate this . Do they want to go after the russian president himself . Chris mentioned the end of term, end of year, end of everything press conference. Michael steele, end of everything. What happens after that . Donald trump will be the president. Hes going to inherit this problem. Is it an issue for you that donald trump still doesnt acknowledge that russia is truly involved . You said hes going to inherit this problem. And donald trump doesnt see this as a problem. And in fact, his tweets, i think, reflect that. The thinking inside the trump arena is one that, look, this goes back to january. This isnt something that was just discovered, you know, six weeks before the election. This was something that our Intelligence Community had been warning about long before, and if that were the fact, why didnt you do something about it then . Why didnt you take the appropriate steps . Here you are on your way out the door trying to sort of block the next administration into a corner on something that was more of a political problem for the democrats and the administration than for the incoming administration, so thats kind of the thinking there. And i think what will happen is the president obama is limited in what hes going to be able to do for the very reason that you just stated. The next administration will more than likely come in and begin to unravel some of that, particularly if president elect trump sees it as a direct attack on putin. But michael, when you look at what donald trump is tweeting this morning, for example, saying is this the same hack that we discovered Hillary Clinton got the questions . Yes, president elect trump t is that same hack. But this isnt necessarily about delegitimizing his win. This is about National Security. Does that not concern you that donald trump isnt seeing that . Oh, absolutely. I think this whole thing is just its a real big problem that the next administration really does need to get in fron. It cannot allow the politics of an election or the feelings about that election overwhelm its senses in dealing with putin on this and dealing more importantly with the integrity of our electoral process on a global stage. And i think that thats something that this next administration right out of the box, stephanie, has to be very clear about. Yeah, i can have a bromance with you, and we can go and do our thing, and wetegrity, the sover this nation, this electoral process, matters more than the beers together. And i think donald trump needs to send that signal. All right, what signal, casey, is ivanka trump sending us. She may be moving to washington, now calling on republican congressmen to really push legislation, move sort of her agenda in terms of worklife balance, parental leave, child care. Shes the first daughter. What exactly is she doing here . Well, i mean, look, i think were in unchartered waters. To a certain extent. Its clear she and her play prominent roles in advising the president elect and, its clear shes going to be taking on a significant role in the administration. Obviously some questions about nepotism laws. They feel you can have a west wing essentially she is somebody when i talk to members of congress, when i talk to even some democrats, if you ask them who might be somebody in this administration that you could talk to, ivanka is a name that comes up. Before the election, she had a very close relationship with chelsea clinton, daughter of hillary and bill clinton. So i think its going to be do you believe that . Yes, of course. They acknowledge, they both acknowledge public ly they were friends before the election. Its unclear whether the friendship remains what it was. It was well known that she did. She does have the potential to build bridges where other members of the administration couldnt. Kasie, michael, thank you. We have to turn to the developing news in syria. The evacuation in a besieged city of aleppo has been halted this morning. This after syrias government claims rebels fired on a convoy of evacuees. Matt bradley joins us with more. Give us an update. Russia claims all the women and children have been evacuated from aleppo. The United Nations says that isnt true. Whats happening . Well, good morning. You were just speaking about the kinds of problems donald trump stands to inherit. Rel, syrias definitely one of them, and its very confusing. As you just mentioned, theres been so many contradicting statements just this morning, such a short period of time. A bad case of deliberate misinformation or the fog of war. But the evacuations have indeed paused, at least for the moment. While the russian government, syrias allies, said earlier this morning that evacuations were complete, that was swiftly contested by aide workers and then by the serious government itself. The World Health Organization saying this morning there are still thousands, many of them women and children, left in the besieged parts of syrias largest city. The World Health Organization has been trying to negotiate renewed evacuations. Its been more than 24 hours since buses filled with injured fighters and civilians first starting pulling people out of the last besieged sliveroffs east aleppo. Whats the holdup . Government aligned militia groups are insisting progovernment towns north of aleppo also be evacuated of fighters and civilians at the same time east aleppos civilians are moved to safety. Thats been a Sticking Point since the negotiations began. Thank you so much for the update on the tragic situation in syria. We have to take a break. Next, donald trump with a controversial pick for his ambassador to israel. A bankruptcy lawyer with no Foreign Service experience. And strong views that could inflame the region. Well speak to a vice chair for the transition team. Plus, dylann roof found guilty of murdering nine in the Charleston Church shooter. Now the big question, will she serve as his own lawyer in the penalty phase. To do the best for your pet, you should know more about the food you choose. Thats why were hiring 10,000 members of the military community by the end of 2017. Im very proud of him. Male vo comcast. Welcome back. Youre watching msnbc. Im stephanie ruhle. A spokesman for Vladimir Putin calls accusations he tried to disrupt the u. S. Election, quote, laughable, nonsense. But president obama, he isnt just accusing moscow anymore. Hes threatening retaliation from the United States. Joining me now, trump transition vice chair, congressman marsha blackburn. Welcome. I want to put democrats and Hillary Clinton aside. In your opinion, based on what you have learned, do you believe that russia tried to interfere, get involved, with the election process . One of the things we need to keep in mind, stephanie, is that the russians invest heavily in propaganda. We also know that the russians have been out there trying to attack our Critical Infrastructure systems thousands of times a day. And were going to see the intel communities take this up. The committees are going to take it up, and theyre going to conduct their investigation and see what it was the russians were trying to do. I did read a report this morning that the russian attack attempts were turned back from the Republican National committee, rnc systems. And they were not able to infiltrate those systems because the encryptions, et cetera, built around those were a little stronger than what the dnc was using. Just so i understand, do you believe that russia did try to interfere . I dont know if that tried to interfere. I dont know if this is a part of their standard warfare. I dont think anybody knows the answer to that. Well, the Intelligence Community we should be trying to put this to an end. See, this is part of the problem. The fbi and the cia have different opinions of we know that russia is not our friend. We know we want to block any of their attempts to infiltrate any of our systems. We do know they invest in propaganda and we know they seek to carry out cyber warfare and we need to beat them at this, but i dont know the specifics nor do you. Its that the fbi has a different standard. For them, it would have to be that they have something they could prosecute. But as far as the Intelligence Community believing that russia interfered, they seem to be in agreement. I said that what the fbi has is a different opinion. That is, i think you misunderstood me on that. We do know that russia is out there needling around. And we need to get to the bottom of it. And we need to block it. And we need to make certain that we pass legislation that deals with breach notification, with the Data Security, with requirements and standards for businesses. On the cyber end with information share. And notifications. And those are things that we ought to do. Stephanie, i have had Data Security legislation with one of my colleagues, a democrat colleague, for a couple of years now. These are its time that we move forward on some of these issues. The virtual marketplace, the virtual space, the cybe cyber activity, the need for cyber security, and the admission that cyber warfare is being conducted is something that we need to, you know, we need to kind of get out there and say, okay, we realize this is happening. Were going to get behind it. We are going to protect our systems. When you say we realize this is happening, are you including donald trump in that we . I think the American People realize this. The russians, as i said, are known for investing heavily in propaga propaganda. They always have. Go to prague and visit with some of our colleagues and friends that are working in Radiofree Europe and talk to them about what is being done. Just so i understand, when you say we the American People, again, does donald trump believe that . I think mr. Trump is fully aware that the russians have made attacks and attempts on our Critical Infrastructure systems. And that they are always seeking to including the election . Influence and spread through propaganda. What we also have to including the election . Im only directing because you were stephanie, what we have to say regarding the election is, yes, the democrats are upset. But we also have to realize that the russians did not take control of those keyboards and write those emails. Pardon me, its not just the democrats who are upset. Its not just the democrats who are upset. Are they upset that was revealed . Of course, they are. Excuse me. John bolton has said he believes the russians have been interfering. We have heard that from lindsey graham. Its not just the democrats. Thats right. My question is, does donald trump believe theres interference. It needs to be investigated because the russians, as i said, this is something that we need to investigate. The committees need to take the lead. We need to find out what happened. We know that theyre always out there conducting their cyber warefare. We know theyre conducting their propaganda. We know they look at any opportunity to infiltrate systems and to snoop around out there. We know the russians are not our friends. So what we need to do is congress will take the lead on this, and yes, indeed, they should get to the bottom of it. Congresswoman, without a doubt, i appreciate your thoughts and effort. My question is, does donald trump think that . Well move on, though. What do you think about Donald Trumps nominee for ambassador to israel. David friedman. Hes a bankruptcy lawyer. Hes got no Foreign Service experience, and in terms of his beliefs, he is on the far righ
