The extraordinary investigation out this morning giving a brand new inside look at facebooks multi Year Campaign to deflect criticism and down play issues with russian hackers. First they found a problem and realized that it was bigger than they thought. They brushed off the concerns, they told congress at investigators it is not a big deal. And finally told their board in the fall of 2017 only then did they begin to tell the public. And then it got worse. Are they going to meet the deadline today . I really dont think so. President trumps new claims of voter fraud. Mr. President , do you have any evidence of voter fraud . Today were learning about the depth of fabes mantra, move fast and breakthroughs for real. And in an article, it lays out the long road from discussions about if then candidate trumps posts violated and part of facebooks attempts to shift scrutiny away from the platform with this company, refiners public affairs. Never heard of them . Me either. It is a Consulting Firm founded by former republican operatives and used as political style Opposition Research tactics. And when facebook came under fire from tim cook who told msnbc that apple doesnt, quote, traffic from your personal life, a new player entered the arena, pnpt network, another name youve never heard of. It is a conservative website with a relatively tiny following, but it is an of a fill i didnt tell of a affiliate of refiners. The site published articles critical of apple and its following is a teeny penlg of other conservative outlets, but the times reports that content gets picked up by much larger sites which then promote the content to its millions of followers on guess what, facebook. We should note facebook cut ties with refiners last night shortly after the article dropped. Kara swisher is with me after going through all of this, there is no better expert. So i got to go to you on this. Will this moment come back to haunt Mark Zuckerberg in take a look. Personally i think the idea that fake news on facebook of which it is a very small amount of the content influenced the election in any way i think is a pretty crazy idea. Okay. Lets and now here we are. Yeah. I dont know what if say. Of course it will haunt him. I remember hearing it and finding it to be ridiculous. And we were in touch with him and what happened is they kept escalating the problem. At first it is not so bad, oh, maybe a little worse, maybe a little worse. And i remember at the time saying it is like cockroaches, they are everywhere and you need to really focus on that. It is something that lot of reports have been banging on facebook including myself about some this issue of what they need to do about the problems with russia for example. And a lot of othernews, fake ad but is it worse now . Because until now, there was a probl argument that the problem, they didnt realize how big it was. And now we learn that cheryl sa sandbergs actions throughout were trying to create other information about their competitors. I think that you referenced the tim cook, an interview that i did with chris hayes in chicago. And they were infewer yatesed becauyatesed infuriated, because tim said i wouldnt be in this situation. And then he came through with the problem. And instead of focusing on the feed back, they were focused on his comment and how to get back at him and one of the things that the New York Times article put in for example is they started using android phones rather than apple, which seems so petty, i cant even believe it. But it gives you the extent of the victimization within the Company Versus actors in perpetrating things. So to me that was one of the more interesting parts of the article is that they took very active pleasures to stave off critics rather than just talking about the problem of which they created. And so that is i think the biggest revelation it me. And they cant be too thrilled with your upcoming interview where mark says that facebook is our times cigarettes. If facebook is intent on the victimization of them or their executives, what will it mean for mark and sheryl Going Forward . Because in another New York Times article when the question was asked could the company do without mark, people inside the company said that is a bad faith question, how could you raise that issue. There are lots of companies that the founders could be geniuses and then you move on and you are like they are not the ones to run the shots. I think people think of these founders asse ese eser irreplac. I think it means how to fix it and is mark capable of doing it. And it is problematic because you control the entire company. That to me is the biggest problem, will is one person in control of one of the most Important Communications platforms who seems entirely incapable of putting his around the problem. And it is something i talked about in the column that just dropped where we did an interview this summer, and in it he made a lot of error, but one was i kept pressing him about what to do about the killings caused by use of facebook and he couldnt answer why they happen. He just wanted to focus on solutions. But he created the problem but then couldnt talk about the path. And i was so perplexed by his inability to reflect on what happened and to fix it Going Forward. And i remember when you did that podcast, my takeaway was what one do you want to be, the ceo and found he were er of an company or this introverted tech guy who is just a kid. So have we held them on a pedestal that we dont others . If Rupert Murdoch and fox news were putting out misinformation, we dont forgive them for it. I think that the question of what will happen, i think the biggest problem is what will happen with regulators. Because maybe some of the partners will pull away and things like that, but they said some things before congress and if it turns out that it is not what happened, that there is proof that it is not what happened what they said before congress, they are in big troubled with regulators. And so all of Silicon Valley is like what are you doing, what is going on . Because there is a communications, for example section 230, Internet Companies get broad imnewity. And the question is should they get broad immunity. And the thing that will happen from the times piece, and it brought together a lot of stuff and add new reporting, is that now that these dimes have dropped, everyone will drop a dime on facebook and what happened. And so you will get these things have a rolling nature to them and i think you will see a lot more revelations and the fact that nobody has been held accountable for it. And to me, there is no accountability, no selfreflection, no transparency. And there is noer tant ee irrite system saying what is going on here. And there is a whole lot of money. Am i being naive or silly in thinking that when a story like this is revealed, were going to actually not just take a closer look, but do you have any faith that maybe actions around the amount of money and lobbying dollars that go from these Big Companies to washington, right . We talked about chum schumer earlier this morning. And he did tell mark warner to back off. But you put it in the broader sense, he could have been saying back off with regard to privacy, dont necessarily back off in terms of were trying to get facebook to purge a bunch of accounts. I did a podcast with him in which he was very favorable to facebook which surprised me at the time. So to that point, and Chuck Schumers daughter does work there, but when you dig into this, august soll sorts of compd the influence that they have over washington. Do you think that there is any chance something actually happens around that . I think that there are senators like mark warner and senator are about yo burr, they have been very critical. Many congress people. And even nancy pelosi talked about it with me, the need to have privacy bills and more regulation of the internet. So i think it is coming. And when you interviewed Chuck Schumer and he was favorable about baby, did he mentihe facebook, did he mention his daughter worked there . I dont think that had anything to do with it, but we did disclose it in the podcast. But i think more to the point is i thought at the time he was kind of if he didnt understand the problem, and in it article it seems more serious of him talking to senator warner. Trump claims that the investigation is a quote, total mess and the prosecutors have, quote, found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. Here is what is interesting. How could he possibly know that . It comes as nbc news obtains phone records apparently revealing that ronlger stone including the handling of Clinton Campaign emails six days before it happened. You obtained these Text Messages by roger stone himself. But he gave them to you. When i read those text, im like damn, he is in trouble. Why would he give that to you . What am i missing . He is in a war of words. All that matters to him is that what he has been saying so long that randy was his back channel to wikileaks, he just wants to slam credico and discredit him because credico is saying i wasnt his back channel, i didnt even talk to Julian Assange until august 25. These Text Messages show that they were talking about it before and every time stone asks credico for information, creditdy company is like im see whsee ill see what i can do. But it is not clear if credico actually gave him credible information. He was saying yes, this is coming a few days before the dump came, but he got the day wrong and ive been talking to people who worked with Julian Assange and it was kind of in the ether of this sort of fringe group of like anarchists and hackers who everybody was talking about. So to that point, were in a fringe group of anarchists and has been e hacker. I dont know who is vindicated, who is cleared. Like what does it tell you . They could just be fringe clowns who are smack talkers. It could be. And we cant figure it out based on what is in the public records. We dont have all the evidence. Mueller does. And so stone is i feel like stone and credico are Like Fighting an invisible foe here. Because they dont i think they didnt know how much mueller has or doesnt have. Look, it could be that nobody gets charged with any kind of conspiracy. Which is a very important point. But i do think and other legal sxernts have said thexper well that miller would not be bringing this many witnesses in to the grand jury just for a false statements charge against stone or something. So it does seem like there is a lot of smoke there. Well see if there is fire. But for us to try to piece it together now, those messages sound incriminating, the whole debate about was creditdy company hcreditdy credico his link, was it somebody else. Any link is link enough for a conspiracy. So even if it was credico, so what. Like saying i didnt get my drugs directly from the drug dealer, i got them through a friend. It doesnt matter. A conspiracy is much broader than i think these people understand which is why they are defensive to confuse us. But the Text Messages do exonerate stone in one sense in that he did tell federal investigators that credico was his back channel. So if that wasnt true, that is giving false statements to investigators. Soxt messages do show that he was asking credico for information, it seemed like credico had an inside track that he was friends with somebody who worked with Julian Assange and so in a sense stones lawyer is saying okay, at least we got that covered. We have covered ourselves on that point. So it may be that he is fight being the i didnt commit perjury fight but he is sort of losing a forest from the trees here. He is wanting to conspire. He is clearly wanting to get advanced knowledge of what Julian Assange had, details on it and when it was coming so that he could use to inglagrat himself with the trump campaign. And trump says it is a mess, muellers investigation. Yeah, so either he is completely lying and just mabling thmabl i making that up, because he does that all the time, or is he getting some kind of inside information from people who have been in the grand jury which is impermissible. Explain it. He is the subject of the grand jury. And nobody should really be tell being talking to him about what happened in there. I mean witnesses who are in the grand jury are frankly allowed to weve seen it happen, they talk about what happened on tv. But the way that he is making it sound, as if he had a specific conversation. And that is what i dont understand. How could the president of the United States who has not had any direct conversations with mueller and his team be making claims like this . Right. So either he is again making it up or he is getting it from somebody who was in the grand jury who frankly again is likely making it up. I dont picture Robert Mueller or anybody there screaming or this is all just projection by trump. He says the white house is in order and the murallellers investigation is a mess. All right.
