One many people, pushing back on that approach. Its not going to be we flip a switch and everybody comes out of their house and gets in their car and waves and hugs each other and the economy all starts up i would love to say that is going to happen. Its not going to happen that way. It cant happen that way. Right now, there are over 557,000 cases of the coronavirus across the u. S. And more than 22,000 deaths. For the first time we can report all 50 states are under formally a federal disaster declaration. We have our nbc reporters covering the pandemic around the nation. We begin in new york where the governor Just Announced the state has passed a 10,000 death mark, although, at the same time, the curve continues to flatten. We can see ten hospitals that house patients, also threatened by high winds today. Staffers at the emergency Field Hospital in central park monitoring those tents. About 50 people being treated there. Nbc ron allen joins us live from the hospital now. Ron . Reporter good afternoon, ari. Yes, a lot of concern about the tents. They are built to with had been stand gusts up to 65 Miles Per Hour we understand. Right now the wind has kind of calmed down and the rain has stopped the last couple of hours or so, so it looks like things will be okay and so they are monitoring it. If need be an evacuation plan to at that time patients back across the street to the mt. Sinai hospital. The wind has put a damper on field testing centers. There are many around the new york metropolitan area and connecticut and new jersey and some were to open today in new york city, the focus on minority communities where there is a higher incidence of the virus. Some of those have been moved inside and shut down and talking about reopening the country and reopening the city, a lot of leaders here say that there should be first widespread testing so that we can determine who has the illness, who doesnt, and there should be an orderly progression in the way people go back to work. I believe we will hear more from the governor about that around 2 00 this afternoon. He had been talking about earlier briefing about sort of a phased reopening designating more businesses and more industries as essential as there are some now like the media, transportation workers and First Responders and so forth. We hope to hear more details about that and certainly a lot of people are hoping to get more details about that but it could be several weeks before the whole thing is really up and running and moving because things are still going to be shut down for a while as far as we can determine. Ron allen, thank you very much. We want to whip out over to Washington State. This was where the outbreak really began in the u. S. The state has flattened the curve there so much that its returning 400th ventilators back to the National Stockpile. The state is looking to the next phase of this battle. Erin mclaughlin is joining us live from one 69 hospitals. Reporter officials point to the state of washington as an example of how to deal with the pandemic with aggressive testing and early action on the part of the leaders for social distancing measures. But i can tell you, speaking to doctors here in seattle, they are absolutely exhausted and bracing for what might happen next. Take a listen. But right now, we dont have a clearer picture of how this pandemic is going to kind of trail off, and that is the part that worries me is what we do to make sure that things dont get worse. Reporter social distancing, ari, is not a solution, its not a Silver Bullet solution to this but simply a stopgap. What happens next . When you consider the rates of cases is sort of flat lining here. They are still seeing cases, 180 new cases just yesterday which sends the signal that there is Still Community transmission here in washington and as long as that continues, the question being how do you reopen the economy . No easy answers at this point. Ari . Thank you, erin. Sailors assigned to the uss roosevelt, a sailor has passed away. Heart of the controversy that led to the resignation of the acting navy secretary. Im joined now by hans nichols at the white house. What is the latest . Reporter the latest is this sailor was one of about 550 we know of that tested positive for the coronavirus. This sailor, sadly, passed away. We dont know much about that sailor. We will find out more pepedi ip notification to the next of kin. The entire controversy about this really shines a spotlight into how the Trump Administration deals with some of its military commanders. Captain croshere made an urgent plea in april talking about the need to how badly they need to get individuals and sailors off that where did you come down on this debate . Local Officials Say they need to think through what reopening could be a certain part of the business sector that could be open. By the way, everything we have been talking about with testing is highly kind of correlated with that. We cant reopen the country unless we have more capacity for all of the different kinds of testing that we are talking about. See if you have the virus, see if you ever had the virus, and that is going to be Important Information for americans to have and we are just not there yet. So i hope the country can get closer to normal, but it is going to be a new normal starting in hopefully may, but likely continuing through the early summer months as well. Take a listen to the cdc director today. We have to reopen correctly. Its going to be a stepbystep gradual process. Its critical to opening up is going to be the continued increase in the availability of testing. Fundamental to that is the fundamentals of Public Health are in place, so that we can have early case recognition, isolation Contact Tracing. How soon can the United States have something that approaches the kind of testing that would allow everyone to reengage daily life and the economy safely . Well, we think that by may, we should be able to handle even upwards of 1 million tests a day, ari, so that is definitely in may but i think something the cdc director highlighted, this concept of Contact Tracing which essentially means that you will have personnel who can identify cases and trace all of the people that that person came into contact with, that is also going to take some time to elevate and ramp up. So right now, Public Health officials across the country are trying to get ready for, that but both the testing, the Contact Tracing, and perhaps the most important thing, what guidance do we give everybody in america about whether they can send their children to school, whether they can can go back to work and those are the pieces that need to happen simultaneously. When we look at the local response, we hear out of new york that has most cases more than any country outside of the United States. We show governor cuomo. The New York Times has added some interesting reporting. I want to read this to you. East coast in the spotlight owes a debt to the west, california, oregon and washington shipping a thousand ventilators back to new york and should western states be getting more attention for the relative success . The early intravenous west coast governors and mayors may have mitigated a medically catastrophe. 44 to 00,000 and california nowhere near that at two. I wonder if you think this is your medical expertise on a larger kind of political media point, which is andrew cuomo in new york getting a lot of attention for his style, for his press conferences, for the fact that there is a lot of media in new york when, in fact, you think medically it is true that other governors have effectively done a measurably better job . I dont know if it is that other governors have done a better job. I actually think, as you saw, the first United States patient to be diagnosed with coronavirus was in the seattle, washington, area, i think the governor and others influentially on the west coast that saw the migration of pattern from china into the western states. I think that governor cuomo, to be candid, has done an amazing job, put aside the effect he is an effective communitior. What he has done is get the private, state, public and Public HospitalsWork Together and that is not easy in any state. I think there is actually lessons to learn across the country, but first and foremost, including the fact that Washington State tried to respond as fast as they could, setting a tone for the rest of the country, absolutely. Understood. Interesting to get your expertise on that, dr. Patel. Thank you. When we come back, the danger of the Health Care Workers. On new york long island, news day reporting 1,200 hospital staff have contracted this virus. On friday, msnbc reported about 44yearolduillermo who worked at as nurse at a hospital for a 15year stretch. He died last week after treating patients and catching the is virus himself. He leaves behind his wife and three children, the youngest who turns 13 today. Right now, we turn to guillermos two oldest children, ali and denise. And one of his former colleagues, Long Island CommunityHospital Emergency Department nurse darryl daniels. Thank you to each of you for joining us. Thank you for having us. Great to be here. Thank you. Im really sorry for your loss. Im sorry that this is how we are talking about this, but i know that you wanted to also remember your father, so starting with denise, what do you want people to know about your father . How are you feeling . How are you doing . Well, we just want to show the world how fun and lively my dad was. He was more than just our father. He was our hero before he became one nationally and just that he worked hard to provide the life that we have here right now. How about you, ali . I just want people to know that he was the biggest inspiration to us, his children. Knowing that he grew up in a very economically disadvantaged upbringing, to see him find success in his education here in america, its really inspiring to me because i value my education to the level that he did, and its allowing me to help find success in myself. Starting with lee to both of you, did you worry about the Public Health risk, the risk to him throughout his work. Yeah, absolutely. As a nurse on the front lines, we and also an emergency room nurse, who often works in the icu, we have always had that concern for him every time he steps out to go to work. Ali, is that something you worried about as well . Yeah, for sure. Personally, i was very complacent. I never thought that the disease could ever hurt our family, but it did. And if anything, i wish, i wish i could go back in time to stop him from going to work but i know that is selfish and he has a job to do, so i cant prevent that. Ddenise, how is your family dealing with the loss and the grieving . Well, its been very difficult, considering how the way after death goes about with this pandemic. We werent able to go see him and we are not allowed he is not allowed to have a proper burial since these patients have to be cremated upon passing away, so its been difficult for us and especially our family in the philippines because they are so far away and they cant see my dad. Both of you stay with me. I appreciate you talking to us about this incredibly difficult time in your lives. But i know you wanted to tell people about the great and heroic work your father did. Dareel, what do you want us to know . Well, firstly, i think that we should all in the hospital, we all want to send our gratitude and our love and our sport and make sure his family knows that he was as special to them as he was to them, he was also special to us and we are all grateful that we have the opportunity to work with him and know him. Our deepest sympathies go out to him. He was an amazing nurse and amazing father and Family Member that he was. Tell us more about what he was like to work with, what you remember. Well, ali, he was an icu nurse that used to come down to the Emergency Department and ive been in the emergency depth myself for about three years now. And i had the absolute pleasure to work with him. He was always helpful, he was always willing to show you the way. He never got angry. He was patient and kind and thoughtful. I mean, there arent really enough positive words to say about him. You know, he cared for his patients amazingly. He was someone that we all looked up to and the Emergency Department and the icu, he made you laugh. He was just allaround good guy. Not even a great nurse, just a good guy in general. He is missed a lot. Dareel, how are you feeling as you both do this work, face these risks, and also have to grieve colleagues . Are you worried . Are you scared . Its hard. You know, its been very emotional in the hospital, in general. A lot of people are feeling the loss. Obviously, a lot of us have families and children as well so we are all very worried. This virus is affecting everybody. Its, you know, look at ali. He was young and healthy. You know, we are in contact with these people day in and day out over and over again and its very scary. We are scared for ourselves, we are scared for our family, we are scared for our coworkers. So its been tough, but we know that we are all here to do a job and to, you know, continue doing what we set out to do is take care of patients. Ali, when you look at people around the country, what do you want them to know . Your family has paid this ultimate sacrifice. What do you want people to know what your father did, about what these Health Care Workers like dareel and others are continuing to do as we all, as a nation, try to get through this incredibly difficult time . I want them to know that h s hes that hes just simply an inspiration. Everyone needs someone like him. Hes a father. Hes a friend. Hes just that type of person that you want to look up to. That is simply kind enough to im sorry. Yeah. Yeah. Denise . Going off of what he said, i guess we just want to say that this can happen to anyone, not just our family, and its hurtful and we hope it doesnt happen to any more people. Its hard to live with this and to move on after such a tragedy. We hope that everyone continues to be safe and healthy and take precaution, especially if its necessary for you to go out and yet be strong and stay at home. Denise and ali, i really appreciate you sharing your experience with us. Youre clearly going through this difficult time and youre incredibly thoughtful and poised, which im sure reflects very well on your family. Im sure they are proud of you, even as you are grieving and we are sorry for your loss. Dareel daniels, we thank you as well for sharing bus and we thank you for your health care service. Thank you to all of you and we wish you well. We will be right back. Chno. Get ready for the drop wait for it wait for it come on man hit me wait for it just do it already one more time yeah.
