Elevator, youve got to run. Good to have you with us tonight, folks. Thanks for watching. We start tonight with the Republican National committees winter getaway. The republican meeting is focused on one thing. How in the heck are we going to win the white house . Speakers including dr. Ben carson scott walker and mitt romney. Scott walker is worried about possible democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Walker went after clinton in a big way last night. I think the other big loser on november 4th wasnt just washington and the president. It was Hillary Rodham clinton. The reason Hillary Clinton was the big loser is she embodies washington. She lives in washington. She worked in washington for this president and his administration. She worked in washington when she was part of the United States senate. She lived in washington when she was part of the white house. She embodies it. Shes responsible for all of that, scott. Its clear the rnc is already terrified of Hillary Clinton. They should be. Americans were not impressed with the 2012 gop president ial field. And 2016 isnt looking any better. In fact the 2016 field could be even worse for republicans. Just listen to president ial hopeful dr. Ben carson at the rnc retreat on thursday. A bunch of rag tag militia men defeated the most powerful and professional military force on the planet. Why . Because they believed in what they were doing. They were willing to die for what they believed in. The british were not. Fast forward to today. What do we have . Weve got isis. They got the wrong philosophy, but theyre willing to die for what they believe while we are visibly giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness. We have to change that. What an absolute slam at the United States military and everybody who works to protect this country. You heard it right. Ben carson compared american militia men to isis. I think what he was saying basically was that you have to believe in what you stand for and we have to believe in the ideals of america. I didnt think anything odd of it. I think he was making a point. I think his point was to stand up for the things that you believe in. No matter how the rnc tries to spin it they know ben carsons isis moments are bad for business. This is a perfect example of why the rnc is probably going to regulate their debates this time around. Nine debates have been sanctioned and there are three pending. The first debate is going to be held on fox from the state of ohio. Debates will finish up in february or march. The 2012 cycle had 20 debates, so the number clearly being cut. The rnc is trying to do early damage control. With guys like carson i can imagine that. The rnc is seeking the devise a set of rules that will bring more order to the process, including more conservative outlets and sponsors and establish sanctions for candidates who violate the rules. Rnc chair called the 2012 debates a, quote, embarrassment and ridiculous for the party. It was like a dog and pony show. I think debates are important. But just because you are a good debater, doesnt mean you are going to be a good president. It is just too much of an importance on debating. Well i think he got the dog and pony show part of it right. I dont think ive ever hired an illegal in my life. Im looking forward to finding your facts on that because that just doesnt rick im speaking. Lets be candid. The only reason you didnt become a career politician is because you lost to ted kennedy in 1994. Wait a second. You get 30 seconds. This is the way the rules work here. I get 60 seconds and you get 30 seconds to respond, right . It is three agencies that are gone. Commerce, education, whats the third one there . Lets see. I would do away with education, commerce, and lets see. I cant the third one i cant sorry. Oops. Would you please wait . Are you just going to keep talking . Lets go through the lineup with ben carson, Chris Christie mitt romney and rick perry. Lets get back to this ben carson comment. We all know the Republican Party is so sensitive and they except apologies every other week. For ben carson to compare american patriots to isis should disqualify him at every level. Isis fighters are willing to die. Is dr. Carson forgetting how Many American patriots we have lost in this age . They are every bit as patriotic as the ones who started this country. We all know if it was a democrat or liberal commenter who said this there would be an onslaught of pressure against them. Just this week a republican congressman compared the president of the United States to hitler. Now we have another republican candidate compares patriots to terrorists. The head of the rnc says he has no problem with ben carson. Have a hell of a winter meeting boys. Tonights question are you sad the rnc is cutting the number of gop debates for 2016 . Well bring you the results of the poll later on in the show. For me let me bring in angela ride democratic strategist also the editor at large for the indian country, and someone from the daily beast. I looked at this videotape because i wanted to consume it to make sure i actually understood what i was saying. Theres no wiggle room here. What were your impressions when you saw it . It made no sense. It makes Michelle Bachman look better because this is so out there. Bill maher got fired from politically incorrect saying that the 9 11 terrorists were courageous. This man wants to be president of the United States. On some level you have to wonder why is he saying this. Its not red meat for the base. This is ridiculous. This is wrong. You made a mistake. Instead of trying to defend a comment that is absolutely indefensible. Do these terrorists deserve to be complimented on any level for any of their actions . I mean hes finding a quality of good amongst the people who are killing innocent on this globe. They dont deserve to be recognized in a speech which is suppose to be the gop would argue they are more patriotic. That was far from patriotic. The folks who are currently serving the country and have lost their lives, there are people all over this country who have grieving their loved ones because they went out to fight terrorism on behalf of this country. So the fact that he would even bring it up to say, at least theyre willing to die for something. There are a lot of people willing to die for things that shouldnt be recognized. Some of them have mental issues. Some of them are just really sick. We shouldnt at all ever recognize them for being bold enough to die for something. That is not something worth complimenting. I want your opinion on the rncs head failure to call it on the carpet and condemn it. Again, we go back to this thing where the gop had this autopsy report where they were going to evaluate everything they did wrong in reaching out to special constituencies whether they were young people, women, gay folks, or people of color. The problem is not just ever in and of itself the message. The problem is they really believe some of these things that come out of their mouths. It doesnt matter how you frame it, shape it or remessage it. It is just wrong. If you really need to say what are we really putting out there and what do we believe and how can we find common ground. Commending isis is not the starting point. I think your comments if it had been a democratic candidate who said this it would be off with his head or her head as it were. I think its important to note that he is not a trained politician. He is unequivocally a brilliant neurosurgeon. It could be this just isnt the game for me. Its important to note the larger gamesmenship is the Republican Party seems to have an interest in throwing out a sacrificial lamb who happens to be black. Unfortunately, they tend to be picking bad candidates to do so. What do you think of them cutting debates and setting rules and having restrictions . Its making it more difficult for the average person and republicans to choose their candidate. Dont we want to see how someone can stand under pressure and their understanding of the issues . Thats important for a president. Ben carson is failing that but he has made other ridiculous comments. He said gay people are like bestiality. Its one ridiculous comment after another. Hes still doing pretty well in the polls. In the republican polls in december, hes still right in the middle of the pack. It is not like it was a quick off the cuff comment. This guy is strolling back and forth on the stage, taking his time, in slow speech to make sure he gets it right and doesnt make any mistake whatsoever. I think his demeanor also speaks volumes about his comments. It does. I think it goes back to the fact that he continues to make these types of comments and he do so unapologetically. I interviewed him on a radio show and talked to him about what the president was doing wrong and the usa is governing like nazi germany, these comments are outrageous. He does not have a gifted head when it comes to politics at least. The rnc chairman is afraid to condemn him and give basically he gave the guy an alibi. Yeah. To me it is much more it implicated the rnc much more than it does this particular candidate. Unfortunately or fortunately, it has shown a willingness to throw out fringe candidates, but their unwillingness to condemn those says they have lost a lot of creditability. Do you think that the rnc is afraid of Hillary Clinton . Of course they are afraid of Hillary Clinton. Its almost like a speech an isis leader would give to his troops trying to rally them. A little rag tag group toppled the british empire. It is indefensible. He has to get a spine about this. Great to have all of you with us tonight. Appreciate your time. Thank you. There is a shocking new statistic about what causes most personal bankruptcy. Medical bills are the reason nearly 2 3 of the time. No one should go broke just because they get sick. A new survey shows obamacare is helping americans stay out of medical debt. The number of adults who got treatment but had problems paying their bills dropped from 75 million in 2012 to 64 million last year. There are three things that obamacare really wanted to do. Increase access improve quality, decrease costs. Health care is not a privilege for the fortunate few. It is a right. Joining us tonight, Wendell Potter author of obamacare whats in it for me. This gives solid, undeniable numbers. This shows consumer behavior, how they are responding to what has been put in front of them as far as legislation with the law, the Affordable Care act. Your thoughts on how quickly this has taken effect. Its a remarkable change. I think that same study also showed that we had a drop of the uninsured rate of about 25 last year, just last year which is a huge, huge change. Obviously the better news for a lot of individuals is theyre not having as nearly much trouble in paying for medications or going to the doctors. Many millions of americans have skipped out on going to the doctor or not picked up their medications at the drugstore because they couldnt afford it. The survey also showed a decline in adults delaying care because of costs. Now, how is the Health Care Law reducing costs for patients . They just dont have enough money to pay out of their own pockets for care they are required to pay. A lot of people delay care because they are uninsured. A lot of folks, if they had insurance in the past their deductibles have been so high, they are forgone the care they need. This is positive news. It is. In the traditional mainstream media, positive news is hard to get a few seconds. What else are we going to see down the road with obamacare . We all know the politics of it. The republicans hate it. They want to privatize everything. They dont want any kind of government involvement whatsoever, but these numbers are undeniable. What is the other big number thats going to jump out ats us . A steady decrease in the number of uninsured. Were going to see the republicans are going to be looking to try to help their friends in business. Theyre going to be over the coming weeks, looking to repeal the 2. 3 tax on medical devices and also to cut back change the definition of a fulltime employee, which would result in people losing their coverage if they do that. Thats what well be seeing. Well see an attempt to repeal the law that wont go through, but there will be some efforts to weaken it that could roll things back. I dont think the president would approve those. I think hed veto them but we got to watch it. What about the progress as far as the republicans are concerned . Do you think we would have seen more progress if republican governors had been more open about the Medicaid Expansion program . What would it look like today if every state had bought into this and set up an exchange . We would have many many more millions of people who have coverage. Of course, every state does have an exchange. Theyre not all operating their own exchanges. People who are that really is the republicans on steroids. They really dont have a way to take down obamacare legislatively because it is so popular. The bottom line is they are depending on a conservative Supreme Court to unravel this. Thats true. The president and Prime Minister David Cameron stood united against tampering with Ongoing Nuclear talks with the country. We agree the International Community needs to remain united as we seek a comprehensive diplomatic solution. Additional sanctions on iran at this time would undermine that International Unity and set back our chances of a diplomatic solution. Further sanctions at this point wont actually help to bring the talks to a successful conclusion. I will veto a bill that comes to my desk and i will make this argument to the American People as to why im doing so. And i respectfully request them to hold off for a few months to see if we have the possibility of solving a big problem without resorting potentially to war. Ill let the scientists debate the sources and their opinion of that change. But theyre not going to do anything about it. Welcome back to the ed show. We have breaking news for all the science deniers out there. The earth is warming and human, well, we have a lot to do with it. 2014 was earths warmest year on record according to noa. 2014 averaged just above 58 degrees fahrenheit. The last time earth set a record for cold was back in 1911. Noa said the hottest December December was the hottest month on record. Six months last year set records for heat. The impact of these record temperatures could be devastating, particularly if youre like me and you love fish. New Research Published thursday concludes that humans are on the verge of causing unprecedented damage to the oceans and the animals living in them. As one of my next guests puts it we may be looking at a major extinction event. A lot of factors are affecting are ocean, Carbon Emissions are changing the chemistry of sea water, making it more acidic largescale habitat loss humans are overharvesting certain species. Fish farms are projected to be the most productive in the way were going to consume fish in the next 20 years. I dont know about you, but thats not the world i want to live in. We need to Pay Attention to this. These numbers prove Climate Change is real. Its happening and we have to act now. And were going to lose some ground the way these guys are thinking in washington. We have to act before it is too late. Joining me tonight is reese halter and author of the book shepherding the sea, the race to save our oceans and a doctor at the university of california santa barbara, who was part of this most recent study. Great to have you with us tonight, gentlemen. Thank you so much. Doctor you were one of the authors of this new research on ocean life. What is the most alarming piece of information out there as you can see it . You set us up really well here, ed. We have historically been impacting wildlife populations in the ocean just by hunting them. Now were looking at the marine industrial revolution. Were changing the way we use the oceans. Were now farming it at an industrial scale where it looks like theyre going to be an explosion in marine mining. Were building power plants in the ocean. All these things on top of Climate Change are going to the make the future for wildlife in the seas a whole lot tougher. Whats the impact . The biggest concern right now is three out of every four breaths of air come from our oceans oceans. Were missing 40 of the phyto phytoplankton in the sea. The equivalent of 122 empire state buildings crammed with life each year being pulled out of the oceans it is not only unsustainable. Its end game for everything. Lets get it down to the local level. I love to eat sea bass. Tuna is fantastic. Im hearing that sea bass could be extinct. The blue fin tuna is having is really tough time as compared to the last few years. What about that . There are things we can do right at the local level to avoid this future. Theres a lot of bad news in the oceans now. Our report keys in on that but theres also a lot of good news. Extinction rates, at least yet in the year 2015 are quite low in the oceans. If we act now, we can chart a much more positive future for the ocean. Simple things. If youre in your market buying seafood, pull out that app. Look to see which of these wildlife are at risk and which are fine to eat. It is simple things in the way we deal and think about about our relationship with Climate Change. Ride our bike to work. That can buy ocean animals just a little bit of time. It can help prevent this turning up of the temperature. Thats something small actions add up really very quickly. What happens if your oceans experience a major extinction event . Its quite simple. If the oceans die, we die. And we at all costs when the g20 meets and they dont address the plastics that are going in the ocean, 3. 5 million pieces every day, theyre wasting precious time. We all know for every problem there are three solutions. One of the situations though is weve got to address weve got a problem here and were in deep now. What reverses this doctor . In your research in your report, and i read it you make it sound as if were really in the hot zone right now. That if we dont do something by the calendar in the next few years, it could be irreversible. Or did i misread that . No you got it ed. Its not too late. Climate change theres an immense amount we can do but it is 100 years too late that we realize we need to step in with policy and our own personal actions. There is so much momentum behind this environmental issue. Looking into the oceans now, because there havent been mass extinctions extinctions, if theyre not there upon us yet, we can actually do something. Thats an opportunity we havent had in some of these environmental disasters that have happened to us. On land for example, we dont have the same potential for recovery that we have in the oceans and so if we can realize the opportunities here and change the way we have conversations with our policymakers, change the way we do things as small consumers, the ocean will be a different place. Thanks so much. Very important topic, no doubt. One other note on Climate Change tonight. Land owners in nebraska have filed a lawsuit concerning imminent domain in an attempt to stop construction of the keystone xxl pipeline. Still ahead, keep the tip. Mitt romney if he runs he says he wants to focus on poverty. Very interesting. Mr. Romney ive got a story for you tonight. And its the private sector. Restaurant servers get some of the lowest wages in this country. The federal minimum wage for tipped employees is 2. 13 an hour. They depend on tips just to get by. Workers receiving tipped wanls are twice as likely to live in poverty as nontipped workers. Forget time off, they cant afford it. One restaurant in pittsburgh pennsylvania, is flipping the model upside down. Bar marco made a new years resolution. Theyre cutting tips out of the conversation forget it dont worry about it. Starting in april of 2015 this year employees will receive 35,000 a year paid salary employees will get ten days of paid vacation. Thats going to be included in the year. Also employees will get health care and work no more than 44 hours a week. Now, that restaurant has been opened for three years, but they say its time to change. Bar marco is setting a new standard for restaurants across the country. Joining me tonight from pittsburgh bar marco coowner justin steel is with us tonight and also an employee andrew halfner. Great to have you with us tonight. Mr. Steel, ill start with you. I think its pretty well documented that the margins in the restaurant degree can be pretty thin at times. Are you doing the right thing . Can you make this work . Yeah it comes down to our employees. An efficient restaurant can run at about 10 net profit 40 making up overhead then you scrape by with 10 . Were going to take our employee costs and those are going to go up a little bit, but what well do to counteract that is put a lot of value into our kitchen and our food costs will go down slightly to make up the difference there. If you dont have good food and if you dont have good service, youre not going to have a good business. But now i think youve got special loyalty from employees. What kind of response have you gotten from this justin . Its really all about our employees. We couldnt do this if the support from them wasnt there. Our revenues were 40 last year. We recognize that our employees are at the cornerstone of what we do. We need to treat them like professionals and not just employees. We have to raise the bar a little bit. What kind of reaction are you going to get from the community as time goes on . Were having a big discussion in this country about wages and the haves and the have nots the two americas and whatnot. It would seem to be the culture of pittsburgh where workers have been respected are going to realize what youre doing and theres going to be a certain amount of you know what im going over to bar marco here because of what this guys doing . Do you anticipate any of that . Yeah weve seen it already. Even though fwheert rolling out this policy until april this year, weve received anonymous phone calls and people across the country, people just calling in. They just want to chat and say they appreciate what were doing for our employees. Andrew how long have you been working at bar marco . I was their first employee so first day, ive been there just over three years. Whats your response to this . How do you feel about it . I feel great. Like anyone if youve been in a place for a while, you start to get used to however it is that day, then when theres going to be a change you look at what that might mean. The more i looked at it and i talk to the guys about things all the time. It means i can have a little bit more stability, i can know what to plan for, i dont have to ride the wave week to week on what the gratuity might be like. Theres a longer investment that i can make and what theyre making in me. What are your fellow employees saying about all this . It would seem to me that this might be a place where people want to work now . Yeah yeah weve always had a pretty tight knit crew. Its a small place, so theres 10 to 15 of us making the rounds through the week. Everyone is really excited to keep doing this together. Its in some ways a close reflection of how we already were working there. People arent carving out separate sections and thinking about themself. Its already a place where you have teamwork. People see this as a place to keep working together and gradually keep growing this place and have options for what were going to keep doing. Everything will be incorporated into the menu price. Because we is such a great kitchen staff now, the kitchens really going to ramp up our offerings. So again one price, the menu price. If patrons feel so compelled that they need to leave something extra in addition to the bill all moneys left will be donated to our charity which is food revolution pittsburgh. Super. Andrew did you make 35 grand last year . Its hard to say. I think close, but theres always that like how much do i keep track of everything when a lot of its just coming in based on tips in a certain week. It was close, i think. So it sounds like youre going to get somewhat of a raise, but most of all, youre going to get some time off, youre going to get health care and get some Financial Stability because youll be able to budget a little bit better personally correct . Thats right. All those things are new and great. Whats the market going to do justin . You think youll get a lot of ininquire es and this might be a model for restaurants . Yes. It exists in parts of the country in pockets. A couple restaurants in new york and california, theres a restaurant in philadelphia that does it as well. But every restaurant kind of institutes the policy differently. When they take away tips and we found the model that works best for us. I dont encourage that every restaurant or every chef or Restaurant Owner take away tipping piptss tipping. Its just something that works for us here in pittsburgh. The cornerstone of this is kind of treating your employees as professionals. Thats what we would encourage other Restaurant Owners to do. Take your time here my final question. What motivated you to do this the National Conversation . No. We had i mean this is bar marco, this is a pittsburgh thing. This is about the employees that we have now. The biggest risk for us going into our fourth year was not doing Something Like this ed because we know the quality of employees that we have and we want to keep these guys and we want these folks to be part of our business and grow as we do. Do you think there will be less turnover . Yeah weve been fortunate thus far. Pittsburgh doesnt see the restaurant turnover that you kind of associate with this industry across the country, but yeah, i mean we anticipate kind of smoother turnovers as well. Justin steel, owner of bar marco, and a great employee andrew heffner. Congratulations. I think its a model for the country. I think its great. Because ive known people in the Service Industry who feel like theyve been shafted for years. Youre changing that youre paying attention. Good evening, rev. Good evening, ed.
