Better, its going to be up to you. In response to those comments, the White House Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany said in a statement, quote, President Trumps unprecedented Coronavirus Response has saved lives. His early travel restrictions and quarantines protected the american public. As we look to the future, we have the president , who ushered in the hottest economy in modern history, ready to do it a second time. End quote. Here are the facts. Nearly 90,000 americans have died. And, while states look to reopen, itll take months, if not years, to recover from the economic fallout. To try and help the house just passed a 3 trillion relief package, which President Trump has already threatened to veto. Calling it dead on arrival. The bill would provide another round of relief money to americans, allocate more money for testing, give billions to food stamp programs, and a trillion dollars for states that have been hard hit by the virus. And, while the house is acting, the president is at camp david where hes been focused on drumming up a phony Conspiracy Theory about president obama and promoting demonstrations like the one in which protestors are seen ridiculing a local reporter. You stopped airing the trump briefings, and you keep airing cuomo briefings. Go home. Youre fake news. Go home. Youre destroying suffolk and long island. You are the enemy of the people we know youre liberal agenda. You want to keep your job. We get it. Youre not going to answer . So youre just going to go live. Im very happy but other people are not getting paychecks. We used to you used to be channel at one time. I dont know what happened to you. Joining me now, bureau chief for the Washington Post and nbc analyst phillip rucker. And New York Times Editorial Board member and msnbc contributor mara gay. Phil rucker, this is a tough one because the president has thrown out a word, a name. You asked him about it. And it was quite a remarkable moment. Its one of those of all the crazy things that have happened in the last three and a half years, that ones going to go down in history. You asked what obama gate was. You were doing your job as a reporter and he said everyone knows what it is. He is throwing out a Conspiracy Theory because he is trying to redirect the conversation from what we keep talking about, coronavirus, onto other things. What do you think his goal is here . Well, ali, there are a couple things going on here. He is trying to distract, obviously, from the focus on his management of this pandemic, which has been widely criticized. And its one of the reasons why his Approval Ratings have been suffering the last couple of months. But hes also trying to rewrite history and specifically rewrite the narrative of the russia investigation, which dogged him for more than two years at the beginning of his term. You know, a number of officials close to the president , including the former National Security advisor michael flynn, pleaded guilty in elements of that investigation. And, you know, this is something that the president has been trying to kind of have a do over on, to change the script, the narrative, so to speak, heading into the election campaign. And he and his allies seem to have frieound the way to do it h flynn. By alleging this theory that somehow flynn was set up by the deep state, as the president calls it. Mara gay, it is it is may the 16th. One month ago, in april, you were doing something that was pretty normal for you. You went out for a fivemile run and a tenmile walk. And, then, you walked up to your apartment. And the next day, you found out you had coronavirus. It was a threemile run. You got to keep me honest. Fair enough. Thats three miles more than i do. Thats right, though. I got very sick on april 17th. I really havent felt the same since. And, you know, my message to americans is i understand youre frustrated. But, even if you do choose to go out and go to work and do what you need to do, please, take reasonable precautions to protect yourself and others. Wear a mask. I am 33 years old. Very healthy. And i got so sick that i was on all fours, at one point, in order to get a good breath. I ended up at the er. I have no underlying conditions. And, you know, just anecdotally, here in new york, we are seeing and hearing a lot of that. And its its not just older people or people with pre you know, with underlying conditions who are getting sick. Those lives matter, just as much to begin with. But, just to be clear, it is a roll of the dice getting this virus. You know, ive never smoked before. I dont have asthma. So its a month later, and i am still recovering from pneumonia. I use two inhalers every day. So just keep that in mind. Amazing. Were going to talk about that, in greater detail, a little later because i think its important for people to understand the depth of it. But, carol, here is the point. The president says he made some weird promise about getting a virus by the end of the year. And were going to talk a little later with a few im sorry, a vaccine we are going to talk a little later about why thats unrealistic. But he said vaccine or no vaccine, were back to business. The president is going out of his way to sort of convince people that it doesnt really matter what the science is telling you and what the publichealth experts, including his own, dr. Fauci, are saying. Were back to business. Thats, primarily, the thing he wants. The thats the message he wants out there because he believed thats his best chance for reelection. Thats absolutely right. Thats the focus, and that is what he weve seen in the last few weeks as the president has tried to shift the focus onto the economy because they know the president. He knows that thats where he has his best chances of trying to win reelection because his handling of the coronavirus is obviously now going to be on the ballot. And the vaccine. His push for this vaccine is all about that making people theres if you talk to people around the president , theyll say, you know, were not expecting the economy to be rebound and everyone has their jobs back, and things are back where they are. But people need to feel like its moving in that direction. Like, that things are Getting Better and that theyre going to get better. And that President Trump is the one who can make them get better. And a vaccine totally plays into that. And the other thing is, we had some reporting over the weekend about, that the president has this Coronavirus Task force sort of fades into the background a little bit and is now being filled with folks who are focused on the vaccine. President. There is this unofficial task force thats sort of taking shape that he listens to, really, more than anybody and its this reelection task force. And its names that are familiar to everyone. Its campaign, white house, outside advisers. But theyre increasingly getting around the president and trying to get him to do things that put policies that he can possibly put in place. But, also, just to give people the feeling that things are going to get better. And one of the people involved in this is carl, as you recall, he helped bush win a second term when the iraq war was an issue and he was not doing well. He is advising they maybe need to move more in the direction of how they handled that campaign. They thought they were going to run one campaign and now they have to run an entirely different one because of the pandemic. Phil, here is the interesting thing. It would be one thing as Kayleigh Mcenany, the White House Press secretary, said in response to Barack Obamas comments that this president created the hottest economy in a long time and he is ready to do again. That would be an interesting approach for the next election. But the activity, including the twitter activity of the president in the last few days, would suggest that he is focused else where. He has tweeted nearly two dozen times about obama gate. He is talking about mike flynn a lot. He is talking about the russia investigation. Hes talking about comey. Hes talking about the fbi. And he went and fired the Inspector General of the of the state department, who aparc apparently was investigating mike pompeo. But the white house didnt give a really robust reason for that. So, in other words, everything the president has done in the last few days does not seem focused on the economy or coronavirus. It seems focused on russia, supplies, flynn, obama, biden, all that kind of stuff. Yeah. Thats exactly right. And its not unusual for the president s twitter feed to be sort of all over the map. Weve seen this for years now. But it has been really striking, in the last week, the degree to which the president s been distracted, and been focusing on any number of other issues. And what it reveals. And we know this based on our reporting talking to people in the white house and close to the president. Is that he feels under siege right now. His popularity has taken a hit during this pandemic. The coronavirus, which he thought, at one time, would magically disappear, is here and is here to stay. And the death the death toll is rising. The number of cases is spreading. The Economic Impact is brutal and devastating and far reaching and continues to expand the number of people who are unemployed. And the president doesnt have an easy solution to get out of this. He feels stuck, according to our reporting. And one of the reasons why hes been all over the place on his twitter feed is hes using that as an opportunity to vent. And to draw attention of his base, the millions of people who follow his tweets, elsewhere. To look at other shiny object, including the scandal that he has dubbed obama gate, regarding flynn. But, including a number of other things. And that video you showed earlier today, he shared with his followers twice, of those protestors yelling at, verbally abusing, a local news reporter. Mara, what do you make of that . We saw that video. Its one thing to see the video. This is a local reporter in long island, by the way. Not a guy known for any politicization or even, like those of us involved, not even involved in an organization that that that does anything in terms of politics in that way. The president retweeted that video. He said, fake news is not essential. Whats going on there . Well, first of all, i would just say that, as a citizen, myself, these these are adults that we saw. And i believe they should act like it. They should be held accountable and responsible and treated like adults and responsible for their behavior. That said, unfortunately, i think that they have been whipped up by an echo chamber, from fox news to the president. And i think that their frustration, while understandable, is, by the way, shared by millions of americans who are trying to protect themselves and one another by staying home. And if they are frustrated, they should look no further than the white house, which has massively failed to prevent and manage this epidemic. Pandemic. The lack of testing, combined with the lack of Health Care Infrastructure and other measures that make that should make our Society Strong but that we dont have in the United States are what is preventing us from trying to reopen our businesses. Not to mention the fact that small businesses, especially, are struggling because congress didnt protect them. Mara, were going to talk to you later in the show. Hang around. President trump, yesterday, touting something called operation warp speed. A program, which he says, can find a vaccine by the end of the year, if not sooner. Now, let me give you some context here. Theres never been a vaccine project, anywhere in history, like this. And i just want to make something clear. Its very important. Vaccine, or no vaccine, were back. And were starting the process. Now, let me give you some context here. The fastest the medical community has ever developed a vaccine was for the measles, and that took four years. The president s dialogue directly contradicts most medical experts who say the virus wont disappear until we have a vaccine, and that the process of finding a cure cannot be rushed. Joining me now, dr. Peter hotez. My concern is if we rush too quickly and consider cutting out critical steps. We may not have a full assessment of the safety of that vaccine. So, its still going to take some time. I still think 12 to 18 months is an aggressive schedule. And i think its going to take longer than that to do so. All right. Joining me now, dr. You can bring all the researchers together. You can accelerate certain parts of it. But theres the phase one, two, but mostly phase three Clinical Trials, which are human trials that have to be conducted on a statistically important number of people, who do not have antibodies, who are likely to get the infection. To see whether it works or not and to see whether they develop any other reactions or illnesses. I dont know that we know how to speed that up to warp speed. Well, congratulations. Youve learned vaccine 101. Thats exactly right. I think this this is what the problem is. I think well have lots of vaccine candidates moving into Clinical Trials. There are already some that have begun. The exact number that goes into Clinical Trials in the u. S. , we dont know for certain. Probably, could be up to two dozen vaccine candidates before its over. The reason i quote this is because the president has been somewhat cavalier in his recommendation of drugs, in his talking about disinfectants working inside the body, in his talking about sunlight working inside the body. And and one could dismiss that as generally harmless stuff. But, actually, when it comes to the development of therapeutics and vaccines, you cannot be cavalier about this. The wrong stuff can kill people. Thats exactly right, ali. And, you know, im going to focus in on ppe. You know, you heard in dr. Brights testimony that ppe, that is sourced overseas because we dont have enough in our Strategic National stockpile. That ppe might have been 30 as effective as the real thing, made here, in the United States. I have been in the icu intermittently over the past few months. Nurses are in the actual room of a patient. I see nurses for hours on end. If we are using substandard ppe, well, then thats propagating a whole Health Care Worker crisis when it comes to covid infection. But youre exactly right. Whether its hydroxychloroquine, which was the focus of the gop congressman at the dr. Bright testimony. Strangely enough, despite new evidence that thats been debunked as a therapy. This misinformation campaign, falsified or just pure quality ppe, it absolutely will propagate a second pandemic and we cant tolerate that. Dr. Hotez cant tolerate it because he is trying to come up with therapeutics and vaccines down in baylor. I cant as a clinician, on the front lines. Nobody can so youre 100 right. Dr. Hotez, i recall when i first talked to you, you were discussing an effort, on your part and your teams part, to develop a vaccine for something similar to the coronavirus weve got. But the problem you faced is is is funding for it because wasnt really thought of as a hot thing. Thats right. We we we have a group at texas Childrens Hospital and Baylor College of medicine. Its a center that actually makes vaccines for povertyrelated, neglected diseases. And a lot of them are parasitic infections for the worlds poor. Moving those through product and clinical development. Then, about a decade ago, we took on Coronavirus Vaccines because nobody cared about those, either. And so, weve been developing Coronavirus Vaccines for the last decade. And and one of those, now, we feel we can move into Clinical Trials. It was really interesting how we went from absolutely nobody caring about this, our vaccines. To, suddenly, something happened in january. And, all of a sudden, there was some interest. Im not quite sure what happened there. But, now, were weve been able to get some federal support and some private support. Weve got this Great Partnership with this organization known as p. A. T. H. Theyre the ones that led the development of the vaccine for africa, the malaria vaccine, for africa. Now, were partnering with because one of the things weve learned over the years is to make lowcost vaccines. Affordable, lowcost vaccines, that use straightforward technologies, that could be adopted even in resourcepoor countries. So our vaccine uses the same technology thats used for the hepatitis b vaccine, made in places like india and brazil. So we think were were a ways down the path, together with path, to develop what could be a vaccine for covid19. And as you know, ripping through brazils, causing terrible devastations. Other parts of south america. It will be in india over the summer so we hope we can make a contribution there. I bring that up, only because when you talk about the timeline of being toward the end of 2021, youre somebody whos actually had a head start. You actually understand the vaccine. You understand what the potential candidates are. He and youre saying that. I really want President Trump to be right. I want anybody who can get a vaccine out to get it. But we should never want a vaccine to be out there that is not tested, that has not gone through proper clinical testing, has not been determined to be safe. Because we are going to stick this thing in the arms of hundreds of millions of people around the world. So, dr. Hotez, i hope you continue to play the role you have been playing. Thank you again. In a letter to House Speaker nancy pelosi, trump cited a lack of confidence in linick as justification for his removal. Basically, thats all he has to say, by the way. Now, a white house official tells nbc news that secretary of state mike pompeo recommended the move, and the president agreed. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman elliot engel calling linicks removal an outrageous act claiming he was fired after launching a probe into pompeo. Now, launching a bicameral investigation into linicks removal. The ousting was just the latest in a string of latenight retaliations against federal watchdogs, who arent in lockstep with the current administration. Joining me now is nbc news correspondent covering National Security and intelligence. Ken delanian. Ken, i think a lot of people dont know what these Inspector Generals do. Certainly, never knew any of their names before. But lets get to the heart of the matter. There is an allegation, there is something floating out there, that this guy, linick, was investigating his boss, which, by the way, an Inspector General can do. Mike pom mike pompeo. For what . Do we know what this is about . Ali, were not 100 sure but a congressional aide is telling us and everyone else in town that the investigation had to do with an allegation that mike pompeo was asking state Department Officials to run personal errands. Now, again, were not sure about that. Thats something that needs to be looked into. But, look, to broaden this out a little bit. These Inspector Generals are the watchdogs of the government. Literally. They are supposed to be independent actors. This one, steve linick, was appointed in 2013 by president obama. But he had a reputation as a nonpartisan straight shooter. In fact, he did a report in 2016 about Hillary Clintons use of a private email server that really hurt her president ial campaign. So there is no allegation that he was he had it in for President Trump or that he was a democratic operative. And this is part of a pattern, ali, as you put up on the screen there, of firing Inspector Generals. In any other administration, i feel like we have had this conversation a few times, would be a major scandal. Back in 2006, when george w. Bush fired seven u. S. Attorneys, there were 15 congressional hearings. There was a grand jury investigation. And, ultimately, ironically enough, Inspector General report criticizing that. That was a huge thing that took up a lot of oxygen. Now, were in the middle of a pandemic with criticism of trumps handling of that. It remains to be seen whether this story will get the oxygen it deserves. One withing we are seeing tonig, little bit upset by this. Charles grassley, has said he wants to see written justification for this firing, ali. Yeah. This is not the swamp. Right . If you didnt like washington, and you wanted to drain the swamp, the Inspector Generals are not where youd start. These are, actually, the people who have been the bull work against the swamp. Theyre the ones who try and keep departments honest. On wall street, theyre called compliance officers. You know, in the news business, theyre these are the people who try and say these are the rules, were following them. Absolutely right. You have u. S. Attorneys, who are prosecuting crimes. The Inspector Generals are receiving allegations a receiving allegations about misconduct that may or may not be a crime. Often involving the workings of the government that the general public is never going to see. But they can save the government hundreds of millions of dollars with their audits and inquiries and they protect whistleblowers. And in the case of the Inspector General for the intelligence community, he was bringing forth a hugely important complaint that ended up in an impeachment inquiry. Theyre designed to be independent. Thats why this Inspector General will have to remain in office for 30 days, the law says, because you have to notify congress, the president does, when youre firing an Inspector General. Now, the president has an absolute right to fire the Inspector General. But, if he did it to stop a lawfullyconstrued investigation, thats a scandal. Thats corruption. And its something that members of congress, i dont think, are going to tolerate. You know what else is a scandal, ken . You have a dog that i think wants a meal right now. You may be right. Im im going to let you take care of that. Ken delanian, always good to see you, my friend. Nbc news correspondent calling National Security and intelligence. Coming up. Tribal nations across the United States are facing their most severe crisis in decades. And thats saying something as they grapple with the coronavirus pandemic and the economic devastation caused by the shutdown of nearly 500 triballyowned casinos. According to the Indian Health service, native americans account for over 6,700 cases of coronavirus in the United States. And after experiencing a spike in cases on thursday, that Navajo Nation declared all businesses, including those previously deemed essential, like gas stations and grocery stores, closed in a 57hour lockdown, spanning from friday to monday morning. In new mexico, new data shows nearly 60 of people testing positive for coronavirus are indigenous. Even though they make up only about 11 of the states population. And this all comes as tribes across the nation finally begin to receive some relief from the funding thats allocated to their communities in the cares act, that was passed almost two months ago. Joining me now. Author, attorney, a member of the black feet nation. He is a host of the podcast break dances with wolves. Good to see you again. This is kind of hard to articulate because we are talking about americans who, in many cases, did not have access to broadband internet. Do not have access, in some cases, to running water. To do the one thing that were telling everybody they need to do for coronavirus. Wash their hands. And, now, there is a double whammy. A lot of the income comes from casinos, which are closed and the lack of healthcare is hitting native americans harder than its hitting the greater population. Yeah. Well, i would even extend that further, ali. First of all, thank you for having me and thank you for bringing this topic up. I would say its a triple whammy because we have the healthcare disparities, which are the byproduct of hundreds of years of neglect, as well as very specific policies that created these disparities and inequities, within native communities. Number two, you have the economic hit that happened to many of our communities. And thats something that has, you know, just within any community, in the hands of a white supremacist, all of these things, whether its disease, whether its medicine, they become tools of of white supremacy. And, so, native people, along with black people, along with latin x people, as well as well with asianamericans, have been well within the purview of donald trump and his administrations white supremacy. And i would add a third wheel to that you know, that unholy trinity, ali, that weve also been criminalized in this whitesupremacist regime that has, you know, taken advantage of this coronavirus pandemic. And native peoples behaviors has been criminalized, to the degree that the governor of south dakota was talking about taking legal action against the Cheyenne River sioux tribe, as well as the nation sioux tribe for taking action to have checkpoints to be able to make sure, you know, nonnatives and outside people are not bringing diseases. Bringing this killer into our communities, that is affecting us disparately. Weve been talking about Government Action with the cheyenne nation and the oglala for more than 200 years and it continues. But, despite what your the complaints might be about the current administration, the fact is, this is deeprooted. We have done this for well over 100 years in the way we look at our native brethren. In a world in which we are spending lots of money to try and fix a lot of things, what should we be even thinking about with respect to native americans . Because i dont even think its an asterisk to most people. Yeah. Well, thank you. Thats a really important question. And where do you start, when youre literally hundreds of years behind . Thats essentially what youre asking. And thats obviously a very, very deep and profound question. But one of the ways that you start fixing inequities is by stopping committing those inequities, in present tense. See, the problem is, ali, that, yes, absolutely, we have to get out of these entrenched disparities that have been going on for a very long time. But, as we saw with the stimulus bill, the cares act, this 8 billion that was earmarked for native communities. That hasnt even totally gotten to us. And, as you pointed out just starting now. Yeah, its just now starting. So were not only talking about past harms, were talking about a continuous harm thats still ongoing. And thats why ill specifically bring up the Trump Administration, because the Trump Administration is the one that is doing those harms. Lets talk about the health consequences. There was a story in one of the newspapers the other day about a doctor. A native american doctor goes to work at a hospital. Saves people. Helps them with coronavirus. Comes back to where she lives, where there isnt running water. We have places where kids are having to stay at home and get their education at home. And most of us are quite grateful that the internet didnt break. But there are a lot of Indian Tribes in this country who dont have broadband internet. We we have some basic infrastructure issues that we should be dealing with so that, when we come out of this recession, we, at least, have our native brother and sisters on a similar platform. On a similar standing than we are. Yeah. Were a long ways away from that. And, you know, as we talked about, you know, previously, i liked certain of the political candidates platforms. Specifically, Elizabeth Warren had a platform in which to engage native communities regarding broadband access. But its so many things, ali. Like, you know, my significant other, she is from pueblo, which is in new mexico and there is very few places she can access the internet. So if you think about whats going on, right now, in real time, where theres no school going on. These students are getting further and further behind. And that further compounds the ongoing inequities, educational and otherwise, that have been happening. So, again, in order to fix these past disparities that we talked about, these past injustices, we have to, first, stop the hemorrhaging thats going on in realtime, that are being p perpetuated by this particular administration. And were not doing that. Were so far away from that. And we have to conceptualize that happening in order for any sort of justice to really happen, ali. I only hope that this crisis has not made it worse because, at least, at least, the issue of native americans was showing up on the platforms of some of the president ial candidates. But, now, that were in this crisis, once again, it probably falls off. And i hope that isnt the case. And you and i will try and make sure that that is not the case, by making sure that this is as mainstream a discussion as we can have. Thanks for being with me again. Thanks for the work that you do. An author, attorney, and a member of the blackfeet nation. Coming up next, an update from mara gay. You heard it from her at the top of the show. Because i trust their quality they were the first to have a vitamin verified by usp. An independent organization that sets strict quality and purity standards nature made, the 1 pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand and the world show that those who are elderly and immunocompromised, are the most affected by covid19. But it doesnt mean that younger people arent at risk. According to the cdc, about 3 of americans who ever died during this pandemic are between 18 and 44 years old. And in new york city, there are thousands in that same age group who have contracted the virus. Mara gay of the New York Times is hoping everyone takes this more seriously. She contracted covid19 about a month ago and she, still, doesnt feel the same. Mara writes, in the New York Times, quote, the second day i was sick, i woke up to what felt like hot tar buried deep in my chest. I could not get a deep breath, unless i was on all fours. I am healthy. Im a runner. Im 33 years old. New york times Editorial Board member mara gay is back with me. And, mara, reading your description of this, and i know you, and ive seen you in person. And i can vouch for the fact that youre fit. You, also, know how to write. You are a member of the New York Times Editorial Board, so you dont use your words loosely. For you to say that you felt like you had hot tar in your lungs, this is what ive heard from everybody whos in sort of our broadage category, who gets this. That it is worse than anything theyve theyve generally ever felt. Yeah. Im theres theres so much that we dont know about this virus. And, certainly, its its there are some folks who are very fortunate, who are either asymptomatic or have extremely mild cases. And that thats, definitely, possible. But i really hoped that people can understand that youre rolling the dice. Because, no matter how young or fit you are or healthy, it theres no guarantee that this virus wont attack your body, in a really horrific way. And there are lots of us, in new york, who are young or younger and healthy. And have no underlying conditions. Who have been extremely, extremely sick, and are still recovering, one month, two month in. Two months in. So heres how i think about this. I think that i live in new york city. I have health insurance. Im healthy. If something happened to me, id call an ambulance. Theyd come and get me. Theyd take me to one of these fancy hospitals in new york. And, whatever it was, theyd figure it out because its a hospital in new york. Theyre going to figure it out. Your description of your time in the hospital sounded fearful. It sounded like you werent 100 sure that they knew that they could do a lot for you. Yeah. I want to be clear. I believe that i received the best care available. And i am extremely grateful for the doctors and nurses, who looked at me. I was not on a ventilator. Others were far sicker than i was. I was ultimately able to go home and manage the the disease on my own, with the help of several Close Friends of mine who are medical professionals, doctors, and physicians assistants and checked on me evidence. But the reality is, there really is not a great treatment right now for covid. And so its really hard to have a caring, capable doctor look you in the eye and say, you know, i wish i could do something for you. Thats a scary, scary moment for, both, you and the doctor. And i think one thing that really has gotten missed here is how Little Information is out there for americans who are ill. Thousands, if not more, of us. And i think there needs to be more focus on getting doctors to peoples homes, for house checks, which is something that theyre doing in germany. And i just, as a public service, ill share with americans what my medical friends and doctors have told me, which is that, if you are sick and you are able to have an oximeter at home, if you are having breathing trouble, if your oxygen dips below 95, please, call a doctor or go to the er. Also, sleeping on my stomach has helped me a lot. I am still doing it a month later. And, also, breathing exercises. Mara, i just want to mention because you you wrote in there about this whole idea of house calls that are going on in germany. And you were saying one thing i learned is how startlingly little advice is available to the millions of americans managing symptoms at home. And i i know you mean that i mean, look, youre somebody who knows how to research and get and get information. But, part of that is the degree to which we have just not had a centralized message about this. We have so politicized this message in america that it is, actually, unclear exactly what you feel, what youre supposed to do about it because were constantly fighting about whether this is a serious thing or not. Thats right. One of the hardest things for me was being sick, laying on my stomach at night, trying to sleep. And i i live in new york. So listening to the ambulances coming for my neighbors, all night long, and really wondering how many of my neighbors were not going to make it. Not necessarily because of the virus, but because they didnt get the help or the medical advice that they needed, when they needed it. Im still processing that and having a hard time with it. A lot of people think that we dont know our neighbors here, in new york, but we do. And actually lost an estimated 24,000 new yorkers, in just under two months here, in new york city, which is actually double more than double the number we lost to homicides in over 20 years. So this is a very serious virus, and i just really i i want americans to understand that, you know, they should take it seriously. Just because you dont live in a big city, doesnt mean that you shouldnt protect yourself and your neighbors and family and friends. I i when people ask me what i remember from this time, i mean, its not as serious today as it was in manhattan a month ago. But all i remember is the sound of those sirens. They are sirens we didnt even i havent heard since 9 11. The number of you know, one given day, there were 7,000 911 calls in new york city. So we will remember those frontline workers, and well remember those people who have continued to suffer through this and we are so pleased that you are making a recovery, mara.
