MSNBCW Way Too Early With Kasie Hunt September 14, 2020

Good morning, everybody. It is monday, september 14th, and im yasmin vossoughian. Were going to begin with the state of the 2020 president ial rate. With 50 days until the election and 15 days until the first debate, the latest Fox News National poll showing joe biden with the National Lead over donald trump, 51 to 46 . And new polls showing them statistically tied. In arizona, the poll has biden leading by 47 to 44 , a statistical tie there. In minnesota, where early inperson voting begins in four days, bind has a ninepoint lead, 50 to 41 . And then the latest New York Times Siena College poll has him leading. And then in new hampshire, biden leads by three, 45 to 42 , another statistical tie. So there are signs democrats are growing more anxious about the bind camp, showing the race in florida tightening, former mayor Michael Bloomberg saying hes going to spend 100 million to help joe biden win the stage. He pledged to use his fortune to help the democratic nominee to beat donald trump. Meanwhile you have three sources telling the Washington Post Bernie Sanders has warned the associate associates he has concerns about biden. He wants biden to talk more about health care and economic plans and he should talk more with people who are young liberals like alexandria ocasiocortez. Bernie sanders was asked about the report yesterday morning. What i said privately is what i have said publicly, and that is that i think bidens in an excellent position to win this election, but i think weve got to do more as a campaign than just go afternoon trump. Trump is a disaster. I think most people know it. But we also have to give people a reason to vote for joe biden, and joe has some pretty strong positions on the economy, and i think we should be talking about that more than we have. So last night at a rally in nevada, the president undercounted the dead americas as a result of the virus by at least 150 now. Were at 180,000. Other countries are doing terribly. Were doing an incredible job. We have absolutely received no credit. The u. S. Death toll is at more than 195,000 lives lost, and during an interview last night, bob woodward shared new audio recordings of the president from august claiming nothing more could have been done to stop the spread of the coronavirus. You and i nothing more could have been done. Nothing more could have been done. Nothing more could have been done. Does he remember what he told me back in february about its more deadly than the flu . I mean it almost took my breath away that there was such certainty when he was absolutely wrong about the issue that defines the position of this country right now. And coming up this wednesday on morning joe, bob woodward will join joe, mika, and willie for his first cable show interview over his new book. You dont want to miss that. Meanwhile, in a Heated Exchange with jake tapper, Peter Navarro sought to defend the president following the revelations in Bob Woodwards book that trump knowingly downpaid the virus threat. Take a look. The president is absolutely right. What he need dodd is be calm, hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. But he needed to focus on we have heard thats what we did. Look, you had nancy pelosi dancing with scarves in chinatown at the end of february saying, come on down. You had de blasio and cuomo in march saying come on down. Why wasnt the president straightforward with the American People . He was straightforward. No, he wasnt. Look, jake, jake. Im telling you. Answer the basic question. You want to talk about what you want to talk about. Youre cherry picking. No, im not cherry picking. On february 7th, he knew it was in the airnd it was five times deadlier than the flu. No. He expressed that to woodward. Two weeks later hes saying the flu is deadlier than the coronavirus. Why wasnt he honest . You just dont want to listen, jake. You dont want to listen. On february 7th. He knew it was deadlier than the flu and he was lying the American People two weeks later. Jake, jake, youre cherry picking, okay . Im not cherry picking. Joining me now, Political Editor for the washington examiner, david mark. Its stounding to me, david good morning, by the way. Good morning. Its astounding Peter Navarro could stand up on National Television and say the president never said it. The president continued to mislead and lie to the public about the severity of this virus. Obviously the president here facing a lot of backlash to his response to the pandemic. What kind of impact do you think his interview with bob woodward is going to have on the 2020 election, especially after he said that nothing more could have been done to stop the spread . I just think it reinforces preexisting notions and ideas about President Trump. His supporters are not going to be swayed by any of this. We saw that poll at the outset of the program with trump at 46 nationally. That is just what he won in the 2016 campaign. And nothing that bob woodward reports, no matter how credible that anybody else, any other journalist who goes after facts reports is going to sway some of those people. So its a matter for democrats to say, you know what . Forget that. Were going to add on and try to get more voters ourselves. But its very dismaying because the facts are out there in plain sight. You have the president on tape saying something, ald now hes denying it or his people are denying it, but theres not much to sway his own supporters in this regard. So lets talk about some of those polls that you just mentioned. You have the National Polls where were seeing biden is leading, and we take a look at some of the polls in a lot of swing states where there is a statistical tie you. Have reports that some democrats are worried about how trump is gaining a bit, and then you see this reporting from Bernie Sanders that biden needs to talk more with his progressive left, he needs to be campaigning with people like aoc to turn out more of the progressive left. So in taking a look at this overall picture here, do you think the democrats have a reason to be nervous . Sure. We always knew it was going to be relatively close. Trump, again, got 467 in 2016. Theres every reason to believe he can replicate that. That biden is up, thats good news for him. It shows hes above the 50 mark. Once you get into the statebystate polls, you see biden in there, 46 , 47 , i think thats the most worrying part of it. Whether Bernie Sanders subscription is the right one, i think a lot of people want to be reassured that this guy is not donald trump, hes not going to make the same mistakes with coronavirus and all these other issues. All right. David mark, thank you. Stay close. Im going to talk to you in just a little bit. Still ahead, thousands of firefighters are battling blakes up and down the west coast. Welcome back. A federal Appeals Court rules that former inmates will have to pay fees and fine balances before they can vote. There was a reversal of a court ruling. The court agreed with floridas Governor Ron Desantis na the payment of fines and fees by exfelons is part of their, quote, terms of sentence, and must be satisfied before they can vote. The decision is coming less nan a month before the swing states voting before the general election. Joining me now, msnbc danny cevallos. I hope you had a great weekend. You, too, yasmin. What do you make of florida block hundreds of thousands of convicted felons from voting . At first blush its incredibly unconstitutional, but it occupies a unique space. The 14th amendment, in section 2, vest expressly allows states to disenfranchise, sch means prevent voting, by felons. If florida is allowed to completely disenfranchise them, then they can easily place conditions on them. Here, theyre not so much requiring a poll tax. Instead theyre requiring felons to complete every term of their sentence. You cant vote if youre still incarcera incarcerated, if you still have outstanding fines you cant pay yet. Thats an incomplete term of your sentence. So is it possible at all, danny, for this decision to be appealed before floridas october 5th reg straigistration deadline . Yes. You have indecisions by not only a lower court but the same panel of this court. Pretty clear that reasonable judge minds can differ on this topic, and because its such a strictly legal interpretation, its going to be something that will very likely make its way to the Supreme Court because the Circuit Court of appeals is the last stop before the Supreme Court and there really seems to be some disagreement among the courts about whether or not this is constitutional. The lower court held it was unconstitutional. The 11th Circuit Court of appeals reversed that. Danny cevallos, my friend, thank you as always. Talk to you again tomorrow. So doj prosecutor nora dan a he, a top aide to u. S. Attorney john durham in his Russian Investigation has resigned. According to the information, they appointed durham to scrutinize the results. Welcome back, everybody. Wildfires have killed some people and dozens are missing and tens of thousands have been ordered to flee the states of california, washington, and oregon as well. There have been over 3 million acres charred. The number of dead reached 22 on saturday, and the death toll is likely to climb with one oregon official warning of a mass fatality incident. The California Department of forestry and Fire Department protection said so far more than 16,000 firefighters have been called to battle the fires the state has faced so far this year. Later today President Trump will visit mclelland park in california and be believed on these wildfires. Joe biden is expected to deliver a speech today on the ongoing fires and the need to tackle the climate crisis. Also, Tropical Storm sally is strengthening as it moves throughout the gulf of mexico, targeting southern louisiana, mississippi, as well with National Weather service projections showing the system could become a hurricane by just later this afternoon. Hurricane watches and storm warnings were issued throughout the gulf including parts of mississippi, louisiana, and the florida panhandle. The storm is expected to make landfall as a category 1 storm early tomorrow morning in louisiana. The states Governor John Bel Edwards has spoke on it. For a first look at your forecast, way tojt go to meteorologist bill karins. Im shaking my head as if we didnt have enough to deal with in so many respects and then you have the wildfires raging out west. It doesnt seem you can get control of that and the hurricane. Now they have to deal with sally, so what can residents there expect to see and to experience over the coming days . Yeah, good morning, yasmin. Dont forget. Laura was the one that devastated the lake charles area. That was only two and three weeks ago now. Heres the latest on sally every tropical system is different. Sometimes a Tropical Storm can do more damage and be more deadly than a hurricane mostly because the adequate goirs are on categories are only defined by the wind. This is a slowmoving storm, and thats going to produce an issue with rainfall. Thats the number one concern is the amount of rain that is going to fall. So right now its about 175 miles southeast of biloxi. Its a strong Tropical Storm. Its expected to increase in intensity for the next 24 hours, but its not going to become this big bad major hurricane. Maybe a category 1, at worst a category 2. Theyre not going to focus too much on the wind damage potential. Were going to deal with storm surge because of the warm waters and then the rainfall because this is how slowly the storm is going to be moving. Notice those position pods. At 1 00 a. M. Later on tonight, thats where the storm is going to be near the mouth of the Mississippi River and it could be toward new orleans or toward the right toward mobile. Theres still uncertainty as to where that landfall is going to be, but thats the area of concern. Regardless, were going to have a potential for a storm surge and then its going to slowly rain itself out. That last position point is friday. So were going to deal with the storm all week long rain tlougt this region. These are our Different Computers giving an estimate where the storm is going to head. Some take it toward new orleans and the mississippi coast. But this is the big story. 6 Million People are in this flood watch. We have a high risk of flash flooding from new orleans all the way to pensacola, mobile, biloxi. Heres what computers are estimating. I have 15 inches of rain. Thats like a snow map. Some areas could see up to 2 feet of rain. Thats the issue with this storm. Its going to be a slowmoving storm and the potential for a potential lifethreatening flash flooding. Thank you, bill. Still ahead, were going to take a look at the president s indoor rally in nevada last night where he openly defied a state mandate that limits crowd size amidst the pandemic. Also pharmaceutical giant astrazeneca resumes its vaccine trials after pausing for several days because of safety concerns. Were back in a moment. Were backn ia moment from prom dresses. To s
