Good morning, everybody. It is tuesday, september 15th, and im Yasmin Vossoughian were going to begin with the Deadly Wildfires out west. As the death toll continues to rise, authorities are searching for the missing and firefighters are working to keep moilt blazes from hitting populated communities. So far there have been 25 fatalities across the state of california as of last night, more than 3 million acres have burned this year, the largerest on record. Together its forced more than 60,000 people from their homes in grooregon, the fires killed n people and forced tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes there. So the unprecedent wildfires and another hurricane on the horizon put the Climate Crisis at center stage in the president ial campaign yesterday the president after staying silent on the fires for three weeks visited california while joe biden visited Climate Change and blasted the president s record calling him a, quote, violent arsonist deadly fires and floods would only get worse if the president is reelected. The president outright dismissed the science. Here are both candidates sfeekisfeek i speaking yesterday. Donald trump warns its threatening our suburbs. Thats ridiculous. You know what is threatening our suburbs . Wildfires, floods, hurricanes are im perilling s inlin inlingt how many suburbs will be burned in wildfires how many suburban neighborhoods will be blown out. How many suburbs will have been blown out during super storms. If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the white house, why would anyone beer is prized if be surprised why would anybody be more surprised when more of america is under water. As he flies to california todaying we know he has no interest in meeting this moment. We know he wont listen to the experts or treat this disaster with the urgency it demands, as any president should do during a national emergency. What would you like to see specifically done on the issue of Forest Management, and is it possible its also Forest Management and Climate Change . I think some things are possible i think a lot of things are possible but with regard to the forest, when trees fall down after a short period of time, 18 months, they become very dry, really like a match stick theres no more water pouring through, and they become very, very they just explode. They could explode also leaves. When you have years of leaves, dry leaves on the ground, it just sets it up. We want to work with you to really recognize the changing climate and what it means to our forest and actually Work Together with that science that science is going to be key because if we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think its about vegetation management, were not going to Work Together. Its going to start getting cooler you just watch. Im wish science agreed with you. It will i dont think science knows actually. Okay. Joining me now, author of the Washington PostEarly Morning news letter power up jackie alemany. Jackie, good morning to you. That part of what the president said got a lot of mileage yesterday, to say the least, saying i dont think science knows. This is exactly what science knows. Theyve spent a lot of time studying Climate Change. Lets talk about the different messages we heard from presid t president ial candidate joe biden when it came to Climate Change i want to know how its resonating with Trump Supporters when you look at the hurricanes, over and over getting blasted with hurricanes, many of those states are states that went to trump, that have Republican Voters say this study out of Yale Institute talking about the state of florida specifically where theyre well aware of Climate Change they may not call it Climate Change, but theyre aware of whats happening in general. How does this rhetoric, this talk, these differences between these two candidates, ho is it affecting voters youre exactly right, yasmin. Also, congratulations on the new weekend show. Thank you. The president on Climate Change is problematic, and republican operatives, pollsters, strategists will tell you privately on background and increasingly on the record, theyre urging the president to move beyond the debate whether Climate Change is real and actually take some measures to address the root causes of Climate Change, which is the burning of fossil fuels which emits greenhouse gases, methane, Carbon DioxideForest Management, i do have to say, is one part of the equation, but at the end of the day, much of the federal lands that are currently burning are actually managed by the federal government thats trumps responsibility. On top of that, Climate Change is really the driver here. This has been in the making for centuries. Researchers tell me i actually spoke with those yale researchers you mentioned yesterday about steps the president should be taking, and, you know, when you look at his record over the last four years, his administration, his epa has rolled back nearly a hundred regulations, 68 of which have been completed 3rks 2 a, 32 rolk leading up to this election. When you look at the effects of coronavirus and all of the smoke and the, you know, residual effects of these wildfires that are affecting respiratory illnesses and the well being and health of people in these western states that are being ravaged by these climactic disasters, theyre really compounding the coronavirus and a lot of the Health Problems that youre already seeing in these lower income communities that are disproportionately affected by Climate Change, some of which are, you know, trump loyalists, communities that went for the presidency in 2016 so i think the followup question here is how big of an issue is the Climate Crisis for voters i think ive been asking this question about two decades ago, the answer would be not very big, but that has completely changed now. Yeah. Well, actually interestingly, you know, Climate Change wasnt as much of a polarizing hot topic as it is now when the Bush Administration initially started to claim its existence but, you know, as youve noted in places like florida, the debate isnt about whether or not Climate Change is real anymore. You have former republican lawmakers, prominent ones like carlos car bellow, who have become essential lie mat activists and even floridas own governor whos taking measures to mitigate climate challenge that are affecting constituents especially as we get into Hurricane Season this especially hurts the president with young Republican Voters who are conservationists and do believe in Climate Change and also really wish that the president wouldnt keep propagating inaccurate, unscientific claims about the scientifics behind Climate Change. It seems the big oeft issue is also the fact that how do you deal with it and making sure that conservative voters dont necessarily feel like their actions are being restricted by the government in dealing with the Climate Crisis the Washington Post, jackie alemany. Thank you, my friend stay close aisle going im going to talk with you again in just a little bit. Hurricane sally is moving toward the gulf coast. Its a dangerous category 2 and is expected to make landfall in alabama, louisiana, mississippi later on tonight for the path of the storm, i want to go right to meteorologist bill karins. Bill, this thing went from a Tropical Storm as we talked yesterday, and expecting ine, as exactly what happened here now were looking at a cat 2 hurricane. Once again, weve talked about this on so many occasions. Its a deadly storm surge we have to worry about that could cause so much major damage so what are you tracking this morning. Good morning, yasmin. Let me update you. We got this in minutes ago i havent had time to talk to anybody about it it has weakened. Thats good news its turning up cold water beneath it, so its not intensifying anymore these little storms like this one can quickly ramp up, but they can quickly fall apart. We hope the winds cause it to fall apart overall since yesterday and even the day before that, the big story has been this epic historic possible rain event and the flash flooding thats still going to be the flooding categories only describe the winds. It doesnt have anything go do with the storm surge or the amount of rain the storms are going to produce just because its a category 1 or made to be a Tropical Storm, its the rain falling thats going to be the issue. You see pensacola, destin, and around the shores. This was never really about the storms yesterday it got our attention, but as it drifts now, its moving at 2 Miles Per Hour thats not even walking speed. Thats walking backward speed. Thats going to head toward the mississippi alabama border its going to take until tomorrow morning it may be like, you know, 8 00, 9 00 in the morning that will hopefully get a landfall along the border notice they still have a hurricane making landfall and a huge rain event as it moves through alabama and areas of georgia. Our computer models are hinting at the slow drift northward into biloxi and the pass kalou say. Isolated areas, over two feet. Great news the winds are lower but the same lightning and flash flooding is expected. That is good news. Welcome back theres an investigation on the possible pressure for the sentencing recommendation for roger stone, two sources speak on the anonymity telling nbc nu ew s the focus on events back in february thats when prosecutors were told to recommend a lighter sentence for stone because of his ties to the president. Now while stone was still waiting a sentencing earlier this year, attorney general bill barr personally intervened to overrule the sentencing recommendation the prosecutors had given to the court, which prompted all four to resign. The president later commuted stones sentence of 40 months. Michael horwitz declined to provide details. Lets get more from msnbc legal analyst Danny Cevallos good morning, danny. Good morning, yasmin. Finding out this is happening, is there any effect can it have any effect on the commutation of roger stones sentence zero effect if it had been mooted, there still no defense the judge makes the ultimate decision irrespective of the recommendation of the prosecutor, the line prosecutors and the department of justice, which is what is so frustrating about the case as a defense attorney, weve long been waiting for the moment when theymight occasionally come along and take a look at sentences for runofthemill drug offenders, nonviolent drug offenders, or immigration offenders, yet the one time they refuse to do it is in the case of roger stone. Roger stone. Yes, roger stone. While they might applaud what happened in this case for this particular defendant, i dont think its very justifiable. It wont have an effect on the ultimate sentence or the commutation. What could happen here . What could be the ramifications here if they find there was pressure put on the prosecutors . First they have to define pressure in the one sense, the fact that roger stone is an ally of President Trump, there was arguably always pressure filtering all the way down to line prosecutors, but if you look at bill barrs interviews and the fact he said he made the decisions before the president s tweets, bill barr is setting up a situation in which he made this independent decision, which i stress that the main justice has the power to interveechbl and i would add that the sentencing guidelines recommendations remember, im a defense attorney, so im biased the sentencing guidelines are not indicative of anything that we feel is plucked out of the air, but judges frequently in nearly a quarter of the states nationwide sentencing below the sentencing guidelines thats not unusual its the Justice Departments intervention even though the ultimate sentence may have been fair it certainly was legal it may have been fair. Judges have not been required to follow the guidelines for many years since the Supreme Court has made them nonmandatory. Nothing was done illegal here. So even if they discover there was this pressure trickling down, its interesting to see what if anything can even be doner it. Welcome back the president has invited several senior democratic lawmakers to the white house for a ceremony where there will be a signing of an agreement with israel to normalize relations later today. The president helped broker a historic agreement between uae and israel to normalize relations back in august and he announced bahrain has reached a similar deal theyre known as the abraham accords. Joining us from london, nbc news correspondent willem marx. Good morning so good to see you today i know you have reporting about the administrations sort of broader approach in securing the persian gulf and why they want to get this done good morning. Of course, what weve heard is the focus on israel, but ive been talking to folks about the broader policy one foreign minister told me he thought the current u. S. Administration policy in the middle east was entirely subjective to the israeli Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu. Hes very upset with the new agreement. He said the decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal with iran was very harmful we heard similar language from the crown prince of jordan and said things have been complicated by the withdrawal of the u. S. Ive spoken with officials across the u, a lot of them from the Obama Administration, including wendy sherman. Because of the way the current president of the United States has conducted its affairs, the u. S. Has lost a lot of credibility, theyve lost the sense theyre a reliable partner, President Trump has turned his back on our political alliances particularly with europe in the first instance, hes always been our strongest partner, and so everybody is going to be pretty wary, let alone iran whos going to be very wary about whether any deal will have any continuity, whether any deal will be sustainable. Reporter there are a lot of other people saying theres a major approach being taken she said the Trump Administration would seek to continue this pressure, hope to bring iran back to the negotiating table, and try to sign a much more comprehensive agreement. She said that would be challenging to do in the second turn she said it looks like biden would return and build on it President
