Youve been digging into questions about Seth Williams and gifts hes received for several months doing sbebs research. Reporter yeah, the nbc 10 investigators have done several reports from looking into his finances with his gift disclosures to the biggest gift disclosure, his 45,000 roof on his house. Now, we have just learned that some of these gifts, some of these unreported gifts have led to criminal charges. We have tried to ask him questions since the fall about how he spends money and how he collects money. This is what happened when we asked him if some of these scandals could actually lead to criminal charges. Mr. Williams, are you worried about any criminal charges for your conduct . Sir . Mr. Williams . Are you concerned about any criminal charges that you may face because of your conduct . Youre not going to take any questions . And that was not the first time he refused to answer direct questions about receiving gifts. We continued to ask those questions especially after he was fined 62,000 for his failure to report over five years of gifts he received while acting as philadelphias District Attorney, guys. All right, mitch. Seth williams, we can tell you, has made prosecuting public Corruption Cases a priority since taking office as District Attorney. Here he is two years ago while announcing corruption charges against state lawmakers. There are no free passes when it comes to . Houiiuaq 99n i will not and cannot look the other way just because you are my friend or a member of my Political Party or my race. Now Seth Williams finds himself on the other side of the law this afternoon on these federal corruption charges. Our Team Coverage continues with nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhaal who spoke with members of the legal community. He joins us now live with that part of the story. Reporter were outside the Philadelphia Police station headquarters waiting to see if the department has some sort of reaction to this breaking news. Of course, the Police Department and the d. A. s office have a very close and important relationship. We should mention that a Police Official unidentified is mentioned in those Court Documents but prosecutors say that person is just a witness and committed no wrongdoing. However there is reaction pouring in from philadelphias leel community. The Philadelphia Bar association is now calling on District Attorney Seth Williams to resign immediately, calling this an embarrassment. The bar says williams must step down to maintain the integrity of the justice system. Now, as for what this indictment means for courts and cops in this city, legal experts tell me its unclear what this could mean to cases that williams oversaw. That would depend on a case by case basis whether theres any grounds for an appeal. In the shortterm, however, attorneys i spoke with say the first step is for the District Attorney to step down. It would be very difficult for him to remain in office. These charges are not just gratuities as had been suspected but actually doing favors in exchange for money essentially allegations of selling his office. Reporter criminal Defense Attorneys tell me this is absolutely unprecedented for the city and the District Attorneys office. Coming up at 5 00, more reaction from the city of legal community.
