Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning. Welcome to today on a wednesday morning. Im matt lauer, alongside tamron hall while savannah is on maternity leave. Weve got natalie morales, and carson daly sitting in als seat this morning because hes traveling. Its a good one. Real warriors, by the way. He is in afghanistan at Bagram Air Base right now. And he is shining a light and taking on a project that is near and dear to his heart. Al, good morning to you. And who is your buddy . Good morning, guys. Jay leno, what are you doing here . Im going to be fighting this guy. This is manny. Ill be fighting him in about ten minutes. Loser stays here, winner gets to go home. Im going home the real reason is weve got a uso comedy tour. Jay leno, Iliza Shlesinger, Kevin Eubanks all doing a show here today for the uso here at the Bagram Air Force base. This guy, actually we saw him last time we saw him, he was getting killed by indiana jones. Oh, my. Well have more from Bagram Air Force base a little later. Leno is going down. No doubt about it. By the way, were all wearing pink for pink power, raising awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer. Joan lunden is back with us, along with a lot of survivors out on the plaza. Lets start with that top story, the first case of ebola diagnosed here in the United States. Ron mott is in dallas where the patient is being treated. Good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning to you. This unidentified man is a patient here at presbyterian hospital. Doctors say he is very ill. He is in isolation. A team of specialists to monitor the situation going forward. For a lot of americans, the fact that ebola came into this country undetected is very scary. Health Officials Say the unidentified patient is an adult who is in this country visiting family in texas and developed ebola symptoms after returning from liberia. Theyre confident the disease can be kept from spreading. There is no doubt in my mind we will stop it here. Reporter according to the cdc, the patient left liberia september 19th with no symptoms and arrived in the u. S. The following day. He first developed ebola symptoms the 24th but wasnt admitted until four days later. On tuesday, the test came back positive for ebola. Doctors believe the patient only came in contact with what they describe as a hand fful of peop after becoming contagious. We know there are several Family Members. There may have been one or two, or three other community members. Were there to do additional investigations. Dr. Content brantly, nancy writebold, dr. Rick sacra and one other have come into this country after contracting the disea disease. Three have recovered, the fourth is still under treatment. Theres increasing concern that ebola will find its way to the u. S. In larger numbers. Unlike africa, the u. S. Is a strong, integrated health care system. The specific flight path that this man took is unknown. We believe there was a layover over in europe before that flight landed here in dallas. Officials say they know of no other new ebola cases in this country at this time. Matt . Ron mott, thank you very much. Cdc director tom friedman is with us. Good morning to you. Good morning. You said there is no doubt in my mind we will stop it here and i think anybody hearing those words hopes youre right. How can you be so sure . How can you be sure that youve identified everyone that this patient came in contact with after he became symptomatic . We will stop ebola inity tracks in the u. S. First, make sure that the health care that he gets not only does everything we can for the patient but minimizes the risk that anyone else will become infected and, second, the tried and true Public Health measures of identifying everyone who might have come into contact with him, when he might have been infectious and monitoring them for 21 days. And if they do become ill, have symptoms, have fever, isolate them, track their contacts and stop it. How do you get your arms around that . He became symptomatic on the 24th of september. He wasnt admitted to a hospital for four days after that. I mean, if you said to me right now, matt, name all the people youve come in contact with in 24 hours, i would be hard pressed to identify all those people. How are you so sure you know everyone he came in contact with . Thats why we have a sevenperson team in dallas today, helping to review that with the family and make sure that we identify everyone who could have had contact with him. Because its not just talking with someone. It has to be physical contact. And thats one thing that reduces the circle of people that we have to identify and monitor. Weve stopped every Ebola Outbreak that has ever occurred in africa until this one. This one could have been stopped had we gotten in there earlier. Yesterday we published information on how cdc and the Nigerian Government and the government of lagos stopped a cluster in lagos, a city which is much more difficult to deal with than any place here. Can you tell me right now how many people do you have under observation as a precaution connected directly to this case . Right now its a handful. The team on the ground will review that very intensively to see if theres any other groups who, out of an abundance of caution, we would want to monitor. You and i have talked about ebola on a number of occasions. Theres been so much about it on the headlines and something alarming here this patient goes to an emergency room with symptoms. He is turned away. It wasnt until two days later when he arrived in an ambulance that he was admitted. With all the talk of ebola and with the fact that this guy had flown to this country from liberia, how did that happen . Thats something well be looking at with the hospital and with others. One of the things we emphasize for any Health Worker in this country is if you have someone who has been in west africa in the past 21 days and they have a fever or other symptoms that might be consistent with ebola, immediately isolate them. Get them tested. Weve already identified 100 people who have that level of concern. Weve tested 14 of them. This was the first person to test positive. I know you have a lot on your pla plate. I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me. Thank you very much. You think about this guy being on a plane over to the United States. Yet they dont think he was sympt symptomatic at that time. They dont think theres a risk that he spread the disease to others on that plane. They want to assure people but yet naturally you will have questions. Absolutely. The secret service, armed contractor allowed to ride an elevator with the president. Nbcs Kristen Welker has more. Good morning. Reporter tamron, good morning. The alleged fence jumper makes another Court Appearance today as we hear another embarrassing headline that you mentioned, another security lapse during the president s visit to atlanta. When president obama visited the centers for Disease Control in atlanta on september 16th, a secret Service Official confirms that agents allowed an armed contractor with a criminal history in an elevator with president obama, a violation of agency procedure. Im kind of surprised, shocked and very disappointed. Reporter its adding to the mounting concerns in the wake of this fence jumping intruder, who made it deep inside the white house, armed with a knife. On capitol hill tuesday, Julia Pearson acknowledged the failure. I take full responsibility and i will make sure that it does not happen again. Reporter one of the pressing questions, why werent dogs released or shots fired . Dont let them get in the white house, ever f they have to take action that is lethal, i will have their back. Reporter why did the agency initially suggest suspect Omar Gonzalez was tackled almost immediately inside the doors when he actually made it much farther . Were you lying to the American People or were you misled by your own agents about where the suspect was tackled . The secret service is conducting an ongoing investigation. Reporter pearson was also pressed on another situation. Tempers flared with lawmakers accusing her of being evase zblif. I want a short answer. I wish to god you protected the white house the way youre protecting your reputation here today. Reporter there is broad agreement change is needed. Somebody has to go in, scrub it hard and find out if theres a cultural problem, a management problem. Either way, it needs to be corrected and it needs to be corrected sooner rather than later. Reporter the white house says it has confidence in the agency. Meanwhile lawmakers are calling for an independent review. Gonzalez was indicted tuesday. He will face a judge on charges unlawfully entering a restricted area with a dangerous weapon. One of the agents who tackled him was off duty and headed home at the time. The secret service says theyre investigating all of these incidents. A story developing out of california right now. The mayorative small Los Angeles Suburb shot dead by his own wife during a domestic dispute. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer has the latest on that investigation. Miguel, good morning to you. Reporter with at least three shots fired, crespo was pronounced dead. Lyvette, his high school sweetheart, was taken into custody but then released. The mayors brother in disbelief. Im actually really shocked that it happened. I really cant believe that. And right in front of my house. Reporter a shooting that claimed the mayors life and, for now, has left his wife free of any charges. Prosecutors are still reviewing this case. Charges could still come down the road. Investigators have not released any details about what the couple may have been arguing about leading up to the fight. The mayors brother says the relationship was often strained by money problems. In the north where the u. S. Has strong allies with reliable kurdish forces, there has been some progress. The militants suffering setbacks. But the iraqi army, which this summer ran from isis, even where it outnumbered the militants 201 is still floundering. The British Military joined the air war tuesday, but isis continues to hold dozens of iraqi cities, towns and border crossings. Iraqi troops, unable to dislodge them. And the militants appear, once again, to have their sights on baghdad, squeezing the city from three sides. Its unlikely the militants could capture all of baghdad without a major fight.
