And during the mass, the pope will canonize Junipero Serra. He was a missionary on the west coast of california back in the 1700s. Soil. [ singing ] reporter a crowd estimated at 25,000 people washed in brilliant sunshine united in faith and in love for the humble holy father. In the name of the father and of the son of the holy ghost. Reporter it was a very trying time in the hours leading up to the mass. Too few security lines and no line dedicated for wheelchair users meant waits of several hours. Once inside, the mood improved. Souvenir shops were packed. Almost everyone went home with something featuring francis smiling face. Smiling faces, cant get any better. Reporter how are you going to react when you see the holy father. Cry. Ill cry. Reporter you love him . I do. Reporter how excited are you . Oh, extremely. Havent slept all week. Reporter what do you think youre going to take away from this mass . Inspiration, um, reflection. Reporter worshippers came from every corner of the continent with a large contingent from california especially excited for the canonization of Junipero Serra, an 18th century franciscan who evangelized california. The basilica is adjacent to the campus of Catholic University of america and thousands of cua students attended including this young woman from yonkers. Definitely something that was a lot of blessings and grace and will bring peace to our campus. One more look inside the mass right now the canonization mass. He is saying mass in spanish. Earlier he was speaking in english at the white house one of four stops on his trip to the u. S. Where he will actually be speaking english but again, the canonization mass taking place right now, his first mass in the United States. We talked with a woman well show you at 6 00 though said this pontiff has talked about these issues all his life about humanity, about religious freedom, and for him to be doing it on the world stage is really a continuation of what he has always done. Its who he is. Its at his core. Its not a performance. This is francis at his core, kristine. He has always made it clear he is not comfortable speaking english. Back to that scare in midtown this afternoon. Around 3 p. M. , a man approached a Police Officer on east 30th street and handed him a backpack. The officer opened the bag and found what appeared to be a grenade. He threw it into a dumpster and called for help. Buildings were evacuated and the bomb squad examined the device and discovered it was nothing. It was just a toy. On the way back from lunch as we were walking we saw a million cop cars, like, closed down the street. It was scary. With the pope coming too i was, like, calling everyone being, like, um, i hope youre okay in the office. The man who handed over the backpack was briefly detained. He is now released. No charges are expected. That scare shows how police are on high alert in new york and final security preps are under way right now. Cbs 2s Hazel Sanchez live in central park where fences and barricades are going up to get ready for the papal procession. Reporter new york city is like a well oiled machine. Construction crews built this massive 8foot fence overnight. It runs along Central Park West from the 60s to the 80s to help with crowd control on friday through central park. As we heard this security plan is unprecedented and today Police Commissioner bratton went to every, single venue the pope will visit to make sure everything is in place and ready to roll. Whats going on down in washington, d. C. Get a sense of the popes behavior. Reporter today bill bratton did a security sweep inside st. Patricks cathedral even checking possible vulnerabilities at the altar. Bratton is touring all the city venues the pope will visit to ensure Adequate Security measures are in place. Police are already screening visitors. They are checking anyone backpack. Reporter Homeland Security set up a command center across from the cathedral where the proposal will have a Prayer Service thursday. More than 20,000 feet of 8 foothigh steel mesh fencing lines the west side perimeter of central park, where 80,000 ticketed spectators are expected friday. His holiness will also speak before 170 World Leaders during the General Assembly at the united nations. 818 tons of concrete block, 37 miles of barriers and fencing. So its a lot of hardware and a lot of humans. Reporter a doctor and his wife from the philippines have tickets to stand along the popes welcome parade route on fifth avenue tomorrow. Anticipating tight security, they plan to arrive at 1 p. M. Thats about 6 hours, 7 hours wait to get a glimpse of the pope. But it will be worth it. Reporter as you can see, the Police Command center is already in place across the street from central park. There is still no parking allowed on these side streets until friday night. If there is a problem with the rails, amtrak trains get priority over regular new Jersey Transit trains. Right now new Jersey Transit is sticking to its regular schedule but it will have extra trains on standby. Both railroads are preparing in case there are any problems under the hudson. If there is a problem in the tunnels, its about responding as quickly as possible and assuring everybodys safety and comfort. In manhattan, subways are recommended over buses because of street closures. The mta is also adjusting Train Service for the papal visit. The lirr will add trains to and from penn station during offpeak times. Metronorth will stick to a normal schedule tomorrow but on friday, it is adding some trains and canceling others. It appears they are either about to read the gospel or he is about to deliver his first sermon here in this country. A very, very Excited Group of Young School Students down to the wire rehearsals for a High School Band thats going to play tomorrow when francis arrives at kennedy airport. [ music ] [ new york, new york ] [ music ] you might recognize that song, 43 members of the Xaverian High School jazz band striking up the classic new york, new york the bay ridge school known for its music program. It was selected to play for the pope. They have been rehearsing for nearly 3 hours a day. [ music ] probably one of the biggest performances of my life. Universal language is music. So its good to play for him. [ music ] school has experience in these matters. The jazz band has played for a pope before. It performs at the arrival ceremony for Pope Benedict when visited new york in 2008. Of course, with a different they certainly sound more than ready to go. All right. The other big story, the baseball world has lost a legend hall of fame catcher yogi berra. He died last night and in honor of yogi, mayor de blasio ordered all flags to be flown at halfstaff throughout the five boroughs. We have Team Coverage on the passing of the yankee great. Cbs 2s Otis Livingston is here now with more on his remarkable life. He meant so much to so many people. He lived 90 years. The man for all seasons and incredible hall of fame catcher the ultimate winner family man also serviceman. Hal steinbrenner called him a National Treasure saying he has always been a role model and hero that america could look up to. I said i was going to be a ballplayer and i made it. Reporter that, he did. Lawrence peter berra known simply as yogi was born may 12, 1925, in st. Louis to italian immigrants. He got the nickname from a childhood friend who noticed a striking resemblance to an indian snake charmer in a movie with one thing on his mind yogi quit school when he was 15. Owe made his Minor League Debut in 1943 but like others his playing career was interrupted. He served in the navy in world war ii on a gunboat supporting the dday invasion of normandy. I didnt think nothing would happen to me. It was like the 4th of july. I was fortunate to get out of it. Reporter 69 years ago yesterday, september 22, 1946, yogi made his Major League Debut with the new york yankees and he broke into the majors with a bang, homering in his first game. Very warm genuine human being. He made everyone around him feel better and feel important. And, um, his life is just a wonderful example of how to do things the right way. Reporter by the time yogi 1965, he had won 10 world series. Many of his world series records still stand today. A year before his playing career was over, yogi tried his hand at managing. He managed the yankees in 1964 leading them to the world series. His number 8 was retired by the yankees in 1972. He was also inducted into baseballs hall of fame that year. The first thing i should do is thank everybody who made this day necessary. [ laughter ] reporter he managed the yankees in 1984 but after 16 games in 85 he was fired. It was ugly and yogi vowed never to stop foot in Yankee Stadium again. For 14 years he didnt. Enough was enough. They cleared the air. Apology. Its over and behind us. Yogi epitomizes what a man is supposed to be in this live. And, um, i am so grateful that spend so much time with him and, um, were all going to miss him. And beginning tonight in their all important game in toronto, the yankees will wear a patch with the number 8 on their left sleeve. Maybe he can give them a little help. I mean, he has more world series rings than any player in history. But ultimately what sets yogi berra apart is his relationship with the fans. You think yogi you think of a better day. Brings back memories of that. Seems like that time is going. Im getting older so i get more choked up easier. Excuse me. But you know, the loss of yogi is like a loss of another age. Reporter berra was the class athlete whose lovable personality made him an even bigger star after he left the game. He is worthy of it. He didnt bs anybody. He was what he was. And that was it. Reporter former brooklyn dodger and new york yankee pitcher ralph branca was a close friend for 60 years. He had his own language. The yoeg, you know, its funny, because he, um, one time we were with him, him and his wife, i dont know how it got into the conversation she said, yog, you were born in st. I was going through a lot of his quotes today and just laughing and its a great way to be remembered as you said. Now i got some tears in my eyes.
