Nurses here at akron Childrens Hospital are busier these days caring for heroin addicted babies. Last year they treated 120 heroin addicted babies. So far this year, 81. And they are so busy more babies than last year. Babies are addicted to heroin because the pregnant mom used heroin. When the babies are born they go through painful withdrawal like not being able to eat and seizures. It is heart breaking to watch them go through it. Clinical Nurse Specialist connie till told me through medication like morphine they can babies back to health. If they end up on morphine medication, usually there are secondary medications and we have to slowly work on trying to wean them off before they can be discharged from the hospital. Mothers addicted heroin are giving methadone. Pregnant mothers using heroin should get mel help because trying to quit heroin while pregnant can traumatize the unborn babys health. There are things to be done while mom is still pregnant to help her. Till told me it up to 25 days to nurse an addicted baby back to health and, therefore, the baby can be released from the hospital.
