Des Moines School bus attendant and a driver are out of a job after the district says video shows one of them physically abusing a student with special needs. The bus attendant was accused of being on her cell phone and that both she and the driver mishandled the situation. This is video from inside the bus on november 4th. Records show the attendant, ruby taylor, yelled at the boy for crying. The video shows him getting out another student. Taylor pulls the child by the arm and sits next to him. Pressing his face into the window, which left a mark on his face the next day, the boys mother complained and the district fired taylor. The bus driver was fired for failing to intervene. Des moines schools released a statement. Saying in part, cases involving mistreatment of a student are a clear violation of the trust and expectation the district has that all of its employees work in the best interests of the students we serve. After complaining to the district, the childs mother apparently had a change of heart. Taylors unemployment appeals case includes a letter from the mother about how she didnt want to press charges. It goes on to say that the attendant did what she thought was best to protect her son and the other students on the bus. Taylor and the bus driver lost their appeals with
Iowa Workforce development and were ordered to repay the unemployment a

A blanket inside a nearby tent had caught on fire. Set a flame by a heater. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the tent fire makes one imagine what might happen in a worst case scenario. Especially with all of those propane tanks sitting around. 05 28 28 i know ours is hooked up to a tank and well be using it today but i told my friends who are sleeping here tonight were shutting it off when we got to bed when theres nobody awake theres no propane running out so thats kind of a rule we decided to make and that was after last night. 05 28 39 05 13 4705 14 06 today weve had part of the

A california mans bizzare set of circumstances led him to a remarkable discovery. Decades after the longlost heirloom was stolen from his grandparents house miles away, one mans childhood is brought back to life. Linda mumma shares the story. When 38 year old nate lint stepped inside this snowboard shop to kill time. I was blown away. Amazed to find the same type of snowboard he used to ride as a kid. I told one of the owners, wow i learned how to snowboard on one of those boards and i havent seen one since mine was stolen. About 600 of these boards back in 1983, just as snowboarding started to take off. Didnt think too much of it. Super excited to see it. Snapped a picture to send to my uncle. He happened to be up visiting. Hours later his uncle spotted an unusual marking on the nose. See theres a 69 painted on there and my uncle had painted it on there way before he ever gave it to me. Thats when lint picked up the phone and called the owners of earth and ocean boardshop. And asked hi. I said, where did you get that board from . Its super cool, but youre not going to believe this but that board was stolen from my grandparents house in like 1990 off the front porch. Stunned. There was a little apprehension. Its basically a shaped piece of plywood. Owner
Eric Aldridge then explained how he acquired the board. It was snowboard season 2004 and this guy comes in. Not only comes in, but leaves the board where it sat for six years. Last winter with the 4th year of drought we were pretty financially strapped so everything was for sale. And i actually slapped a price tag on that board. 900 dollars it read. Much lower than the 6thousand one just like it he told me
Merry Christmas and gave me my board back. A
Priceless Gift to its rightful owner. It just made my day. Who now plans to mount it on the wall of his game room. Along with this picture. That way i can tell my kids and grand kids the story for years to come. Lint says as soon as he brought the board home he stepped into it and discovered its still set up the same way he rode it as a kid. Still ahead on today in iowa saturday. Severe

Winter Weather across the country has left at least 8 people dead. The storm hit some of the south and has a bulls eye on parts of the mid atlantic and northeast. As scott mclean reports. It isnt over yet. The historic and crippling storm is pounding much of the eastern us. The blizzard is expected to continue creating dangerous conditions through saturday night. Its intensifying over

Million People are in the storms path. Baltimore, md we need citizens to do their part we ask for the full cooperation of motorists and residents alike. In order to make us successful in clearing snow from city streets, citizens are strongly encouraged to remain indoors and to stay off the streets and more than 130 thousand customers are without power mostly in

National Guard has been rescuing motorists trapped in their vehicles on an icy interstate highway. Some trapped for more than 12 hours. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in some coastal areas, like this town in new jersey. Weve been through it before, we have stuff in here to keep warm, its just part of everyday living. And the countrys air traffic is at a virtual standstill with more than 76 hundred

Iowa Caucuses put our state in the spotlight every four years. Bringing in people from across the country. Des moines will be a busy place in the final nine days until jim merten shows us how businesses are cashing in. Iowas biggest city is getting ready for one of americas biggest political events. Greg edwards it gets a lot of national exposure, it gives
Us International exposure. For just one night, des moines is the epicenter of the political world. More important than washington dc and new york. Mcguire we take this very seriously. A cold, midwest city that most of the nation flies over now commands the attention of every political junkie and the journalists who cover them. And the way they view des moines is changing. Greg edwards they always wanted to do their broadcast in front of a silo, in the middle of a corn field, and we were saying come to the city, use our skyline as your backdrop. And the city is proving to be more than a skyline its a profit center. The
Old Spaghetti works has seen a caucus or two. It started business in 1978, two years after jimmy carter put the iowa caucus on the map. And every now and then, some foreign accents are heard ordering its chicken. Jon scholl you get some foreign press. You know, you get asian, you get canadian, you get hispanic ones, mexico, you know, its great for the state to get different people in town. And it warms the heart of businesses that might otherwise find it hard to earn a buck during the cold, hard winter. In downtown, theres no room at the marriott where rooms start at 289 a night. We cant book a room at the less expensive hyatt place either. Greg edwards you probably wont find a hotel room downtown but youll find a hotel in the metro that weekend. Nat sound usually six of ten
Des Moines Hotel rooms would be filled the first weekend in february. The caucus is expected to push occupancy to 90percent. Hallie caucus night is very special for us. The ramada tropics resort still has rooms available. Nat sound we do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. And its not hiking its rates. Hallie downtown will fill up first with all of their hotels and then it slowly moves to the west with our being the all the money thats to be made from the caucus. Des moines is looking at the prestige. In 2007, the city burst with pride when a
New York Times reporter
Adam Nagourney wrote this precaucus review. Im not sure i would go so far as to say that des moines has become a vacation destination. But it has most certainly become cool. Thats worth gold for a city that loses its spotlight on groundhog day. Greg edwards its kinda like the day after prom, you know, its like oh my gosh, you take a deep breath. On one hand, happy its done with, but on the other hand, were sad to see them go. And a few democratic hopefulls are making their last stops in iowa before caucus day. Martin omally is
