Coming up on today in new york, an iteam investigation into affirmative action. We dont really know the level to which this information is used. Is affirmative action working against some of the minorities its meant to help . The iteam hears from asian affirmative action is intended to benefit racial minorities. Thats not the case for Asian College applicants. Many hyperforming asians believe their spots are taken by lower performing whites. Chris glorioso investigates the asian penalty on College Applications. It turns the notion of affirmative action on its head. We found asian students afraid to disclose their minority status on College Applications. We were even told some asian students are marking down that theyre white hoping to get a competitive advantage. You would do anything to get into your dream school. But this new Jersey College student says theres a growing concern among Asian American applicants. They may be minorities, but many fear affirmative action is working against them and in favor of whites. When people look at you, do they say youre asian . Yes. What did you check on the College Application box . I put that i was white. Technically, he did not break any rules. This student has one white parent and one asian parent. He told us he feels less than honest. He said some of his asian friends have gone a step further. Checking the box for white even though both parents are asian. Of course, i dont feel that being entirely honest but not checking off asian. Asian students are really struggling. Hes a consultant paid to help kids get into top colleges. He would never advise a students to be dishonest. He has advised them to skip over that race question. He says these days, affirmative whites, not minorities. More white males are being affirmed in total across the country than black students, than asian students. Federal stats show asian students outperformed whites on the s. A. T. And the gap is getting wider. A princeton study concluded an asia student had to score 140 points higher than a white peer for the same probability of admission to an elite school. Is it fair to say theres a penalty for being asian . I mean, the numbers would tell you that you need higher test scores and higher quantitative measures to be competitive. We asked the state universities of new york and whether there is a penalty . I spokeswoman for suny said no. A spokesman for new jersey state schools declined to say. Both states said they couldnt accepted and rejected applicants broken down by s. A. T. Scores and race. That makes this student suspicious. You dont really know the level to which this information is used. Hes far from the only one who believes there is a penalty for being asian on College Applications. Yes, it is more difficult being asian to get into college than, say, another race. I feel like theres a higher standard set for Asian Americans as compared to maybe other cities. You can have high s. A. T. Scores. Up cant get into anything. The question of whether there is an asian penalty may be decided in the courts. Recently, a group called students for fair admissions filed suits bens unc chapel hill. The schools have responded saying their allegations are vague and based on bad information. For the iteam, im chris glorioso. More investigations means more answers. To look into, give us a call. Coming up next at 7 30, the latest on the top stories, including this.
