Might soon shoot at that get away car and its not a bullet. Good evening in for diane. Its great to have you on a thursday night. We begin with that scare playing out in atlanta tonight, the cdc asking how could this happen, one of their own workers making a huge and dangerous mistake, potentially exposing his coworkers to live anthrax. Heres the latest at this hour. Were learning 75 cdc employees may have been exposed, those workers being treated at this hour. Tonight theres now an investigate under way into how this happened. Abcs chief medical editor, dr. Richard besser who spent many years at the cdc got the call today, his source in the lab telling him he was, quote, devastated. So he lead off with dr. Besser. Reporter the cdc is telling us tonight that something went terribly wrong. Live anthrax was passed along to labs that werent equipped to handle it. Between june 6th and 13th, 75 people without the needed protective gear may have breathed it and become infrequented. The bio labs at the cdc in atlanta handle the deadliest diseases and viruses in the world. From e bowl la to smallpox where precautions are serious and necessary. This is where scientists and doctors work on such deadly diseases as plague and west nile, t. B. And hiv. Tonight the labs are shut down, sealed, being decon tomorrow natd. Its that live form of anthrax that got, somehow, into lower level labs. Theres no risk of these 75 workers spreading the disease to others, friends or family, because it isnt spread person to person. There is real concern for the workers themselves. None of the workers show any symptoms yet but theyre not yet in the clear. Symptoms like fever and chills, shortness of breath, confusion, dizziness and headache. If anthrax goes untreated, it has a very high mortality rate, about 85 . Even if you get the right antibiotics for it, theres a 40 mortality rate. These workers are all being offered antibiotics for 60 days, and the vaccine just in case. For an organization that works so often with the deadliest diseases on the planet, its a frightening mistake. Dr. Besser is with us now. You made the point that its only these workers, not their families, not their neighbors. Why is that . You have to breathe it in to get sick. Rarely you can get it from contaminated clothing. I learned that the outer clothes were left in the lab. But they are concerned about the workers. Yeah. This can live in your body for 60 days and infrequent you and it can be deadly. 60 days of antibiotics, plus a vaccine. The bigger picture, people are going to say this is one of the most dangerous labs in the country. How does a mistake like this happen . This is one of the worlds premiere labs. I spoke with them and they are absolutely devastated. Theyre going to look to see how did this happen and i think there are going to be some outside eyes looking at this as well. I know youll have more on good morning america, thank you. We move to the crises in iraq, big doechlths this evening. President obama revealing military action is on the table. 300 advisor is, special forces sent into iraq. Could the americans see combat . We have Team Coverage at the white house and baghdad and we start with Martha Raddatz in iraq again for us. Good evening. Reporter good evening, david. Clearly what the president is trying to do is keep this nation in which the United States has invested so much from collapsing while resisting a slide back to war that he tried so hard to end. Tonight fighter jets launching from a u. S. Carrier back over the iraqi skies, watching the militants on the move. Today president obama made it clear that u. S. Combat forces will not fight a new war here, but within days, the first of some 300 additional u. S. Troops, military advisers, will begin arriving, a move clearly aimed at bolstering the iraqi forces that are crumbling in the face of battle. And the president today not ruling out air strikes. We will be prepared to take targeted and precise military action if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires it. Reporter that likely means using drones to fire on limited targets. The president did have tough words for his iraqi counter part, nuiri almaliki for nailing to unit iraqs religious and ethnic factions. But the president also said there are lessons to learn from this crises and from the nineyear war that has left deep scars on our nation. Its clear from the last decade the need for the United States to ask hard questions before we take action abroad. Martha is with us now from baghdad. Martha, we all heard the president say today that hes prepared to send those additional American Military advisers. Were talking about hundreds of them. Who are they and what would they be doing . Reporter they will actually be special forces, david. The 300 will divide into teams of 12, and they will actually embed with Iraqi Military forces, first the headquarters and then a brigade level to help train and advise them. And the white house has not ruled out that these advisors would actually help the iraqis find targets for air strikes. No combat for these american troops, but i could still say this is a Dangerous Mission. Thank you. I want to bring in abcs chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl standing by. You heard martha report there, the white house not ruling out special forces. Martha points out it could be dangerous. Was this a surprise . Reporter it was in this sense, david. We knew the president was likely to send special forces to help train the iraqis but this is a significantly more Dangerous Mission than had been widely anticipated. Three times as many special forces as had been reported. David, they will be embedded as you heard martha regard, with iraqi forces not just in baghdad but also up in northern iraq. The president though faces a real dilemma here. He wants no part of going back into iraq, a war he claims credit for ending, but at the same time this group now taking over parts of iraq poses a real threat as a former ambassador to iraq who served under obama said today this group is more formidable than osama bin Ladens Al Qaeda at the present time of the september 11 attack. Thanks to you both tonight. We move on here to another developing headline, a giant swath of Severe Weather from the midwest tonight to the east coast. The upper midwest under the gun from minneapolis to kansas city and another area over northern texas. Were looking at the potential for large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding a big concern. David, i want to show you the area of flooding. Its a very broad area. Theres a stationary front thats draped across the upper midwest into the midatlantic. Portugal without Cristiano Ronaldo is a totally different team. Reporter the americans have issues of their own. Their star is out. But the other challenge, the game will be played in manaus, the middle of the amazon, hot and humid. With hotels scarce, fans are sleeping at a camp in the jungle just to see the action. I wanted a boat ride on the amazon river. Ten minutes down the marina and to an outrigger canoe. 20 minutes into the juggle, no lights, no air conditioning. What are you going to tell the americans this weekend that are going to manaus . Good luck. Bring bug spray and air conditioners. Reporter now, we came inside because its been pouring all day in rio. Including innocent bystanders like john farriss son now crusading against those chases. The burden to protect the public is on law enforcement. Oftentimes protecting the public means breaking off and not continuing that pursuit. Reporter so where do police draw the line . Police officers dont want to be in Police Chases. They dont want to be in Police Chases. Its a danger to them and to the public as well. Reporter nearly two dozen Police Departments now using new Gps Technology called star chase. It shoots a tracker from the front grille of a police car onto the car theyre pursuing. They can trace the suspect without the hot pursuit. Some hope this will make the chase, as exciting ago it may seem, a thing of the past. Ryan smith, abc news, new jersey. Our thanks to you.
