'A snake': Agnelli's cut-throat soccer politics cause uproar

Card image cap

ROME (AP) — If the stylish and swashbuckling soccer romantic Giovanni Agnelli represented the epitome of club presidents a few generations ago, his nephew Andrea Agnelli’s affinity for the cut-throat business side of the sport falls more in line with the American and foreign owners who are gobbling up the European game.
Considered by many the mastermind behind the breakaway Super League that is dividing soccer, Andrea Agnelli is gaining a reputation for his boardroom backstabbing.
“A snake,” was the way an angry UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin labeled Agnelli on Monday. “I have never seen a person lie so many times and so persistently as he did.”

Perez discusses Real Madrid's interest in Kylian Mbappe, dismisses Ronaldo return
Kylian Mbappe has been on Real Madrid's radar since he exploded on to the scene with PSG
April 20, 2021 07:50 BST
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez refused to deny the club's interest in signing Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe this summer, but told fans to remain calm.
The Spanish giants have made no secret about their desire to bolster the squad this summer and have been linked with moves for the likes of Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland.
Perez admits that Real does need to "change and evolve" having fallen behind Atletico Madrid in the La Liga this campaign. The Paris Saint-Germain forward remains their top priority owing to his eye-catching performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

'Ronaldo will not come back to Real Madrid' - Perez rules out signing Juventus star

El Chiringuito: "Cristiano Ronaldo will not come back to Real Madrid.
"It does not make sense, he has a contract with Juventus. I love him a lot, he has given us a lot."
Who else are Real being linked with?
He is yet to sign a contract extension in France, as he approaches the final 12 months of his current deal, and could be the subject of big-money bids over the coming weeks.
Perez, though, has sought to play down the speculation, saying of a highly-rated 22-year-old: "The fans always ask me to buy Mbappe.
"My answer? I say: don't worry... the truth is that he is a good player, yes.

Burger King Digital Advert By David: BK Stevenage Challenge

Card image cap

Brands pay millions to get soccer’s biggest players to endorse them. But Burger King realized they didn’t need to do that. A year ago, we found Stevenage F.C., a team at the bottom of English football’s lowest league and became their sponsors. Because we knew that if our logo was on their jerseys, our logo was going to appear in the biggest soccer videogame in the world: FIFA 20. We launched the Stevenage Challenge, where we invited gamers to sign the best players to the Stevenage team, score goals with them, and win free food from BK. Not only did we receive tens of thousands of UCG content with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, and Neymar wearing the Burger King logo (without having to pay them a penny), we turned a small team in real life into the biggest team online.

A very atypical 2021 Ballon d'Or: neither Messi nor CR7 are favorites

Mbappé and Haland
With young and talented players like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland lurking, and with the Argentine and Portuguese in the final stretch of their careers plus their clubs spending low hours in Europe, it
seems that we are approaching a change of cycle in football. international, although of course, if one of the two kings of football manages to be crowned with their teams in the upcoming Copa América and Eurocopa respectively, their chances of winning the award would grow.
The young French striker is a bookmaker's favorite. Today he is one of the most coveted forwards on the planet and his display at the Camp Nou in the round of 16 with a hat trick against Barcelona and then his double at the Allianz Arena against Bayern in the quarterfinals, have given him a very nice image.

A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Sunday:
Spectators will return to an English football stadium for the first time since last year when a crowd of 4,000 is allowed into the FA Cup semifinal match between Leicester and Southampton. Only locals from the Wembley area will be allowed in rather than fans of the clubs. It's part of a trial for the return of spectators that will require all attendees to produce a negative coronavirus test result. Leicester, the 2016 Premier League champion, is looking to reach its first FA Cup final since 1969. Southampton lifted the cup in 1976. In Sunday's two Premier League games, Manchester United looks to consolidate second place when it plays Burnley at Old Trafford. Fulham is seven points from safety as it faces midtable Arsenal.

Only three minutes remained of the Serie A contest when Malinovskiy's effort deflected past Wojciech Szczesny to secure the points for Atalanta, who leapfrog Juve into third place in the table.
The Bianconeri were without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and his absence was acutely felt as Andrea Pirlo's side lacked a cutting edge in attack.
Juve have now drawn three and lost one of their games in Serie A this season where Ronaldo has been absent.

Inter Milan were unable to make it 11 straight wins in Serie A after a 1-1 draw against Napoli on Sunday evening.
The Nerazzurri targeted the first breakthrough and it nearly came on the half-hour mark when a side-footed effort from Romelu Lukaku came off the woodwork.
Napoli weren’t overawed by the table-topping side and demonstrated such nine minutes from halftime after a cross from Lorenzo Insigne forced goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to an own-goal.
Although the lead was nearly short-lived a minute later as a floating ball from a free-kick by Christian Eriksen saw Lukaku struck the base of the post with a close-range shot.

Twelve of Europe’s most powerful clubs announced the launch of a breakaway European Super League on Monday in a potentially seismic shift in the way football is run, but faced accusations of greed and cynicism.
Six Premier League teams — Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham — are involved, alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to create a “new midweek competition” but would continue to “compete in their respective national leagues”.

BERGAMO: Juventus slipped to a last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Atalanta on Sunday as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side leapfrogged the champions into third place in the Serie A standings. Juve, missing Cristiano Ronaldo due to injury, struggled to break down the in-form hosts without their Portuguese talisman and were forced to defend for much of the second half against Serie A’s top scorers. It looked as though Juve had done enough to hold on for a point, but substitute Ruslan Malinovskiy snatched a fifth successive league win for Atalanta in the 87th minute, sparking wild scenes of celebration.

Three reasons why leaving Barcelona might be good for Messi's career.

Card image cap

In the wake of Barcelona's Copa Del Rey victory, there has been increasing talk of Lionel Messi staying at the club beyond this summer.
His relationship with the board, the manager and the club has improved drastically over the second half of the season.
Even a Champions League exit at the hands of PSG did little to prevent the healing.
However, with his contract about to expire at the end of the season, it is too early to write off a possible transfer to another elite club.
Barcelona are desperately trying to hold on to Messi, but the Argentine might fancy a move to a different club.

Life after Jose: How his former clubs moved on from Mourinho...

P68 W45 D14 L9 PPG: 2.19
When and how Mourinho left: The manager departed for Chelsea just a couple of days after guiding Porto to a domestic league and Champions League double, a year after claiming the UEFA Cup.
What he achieved in his home country is perhaps his greatest accomplishment – it was the first time in 11 years that a club from outside the ‘big four’ nations had won the Champions League, and it was certainly not a remarkable side.
Despite the success he brought, Mourinho’s Porto exit become acrimonious. The club’s president Pinto da Costa resented the fact that his coach had met with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon in Portugal without informing Porto. His refusal to celebrate the Champions League triumph with his players also grated and led Da Costa to describe the parting as ‘hasty, abrupt and bizarre’.
