After her shocking loss to president elect donald trump. This is not the outcome we wanted or worked so hard for. And im sorry we did not win this election. Trump triumphant as he spent his first full day as the man who will be the 45th president to lead the nation and will do it with a republican controlled house and senate. I promise you i will not let you down. The republican was out spent and down in the polls for most of the election. Who he called crooked. Now we owe her a major debt of gratitude to the country. And his receiptic a major point of criticism as he beat out gop rivals. In the end White Working Class men and women propelled trump to victory. Lets look live at washington, d. C. , the rose garden at the white house where president obama is about to make his first comments since the election of donald trump. Good afternoon everybody. Yesterday after votes were tallied a shot of a video that some of you may have seen in which i said to the American People regardless of which side you were on in the election, regardless of whether your candidate won or lost, the sun would come up in the morning. And that is one bit of prognosticating that came true. The sun is up. And i know everybody had a long night. I did as well. I had a chance to talk president elect trump last night about 3 30 in the morning i think it was to congratulate him on winning the election and a chance to invite him to come to the white house tomorrow. To talk about making sure there is a Successful Transition between our presidencies. Now, it is no secret that the president elect and i have some pretty significant differences. Remember that eight years ago president bush and i had significant differs, but president bushs team could not have been more professional and gracious in making sure we had a smooth transition so we could hit the ground running. And one thing you realize quickly in this job is that the presidency and vice presidency is bigger than any of us. I have instructed my team to follow the example that president bushs team set eight years and work as hard as we can to make sure its a Successful Transition for the president elect. Because we are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country. The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy. And over the next few months well show that to the world. I also had a chance to speak with secretary clinton and a chance to hear her remarks. I could not be prouder of her. She has lived an extraordinary life of public service, she was a great first lady, an outstanding senator for the state of new york. And she could not have been a better secretary of state. Im proud of her, a lot of americans look up to her. Her candidacy and nomination was historic and sends a message to our daughters across the country that they can achieve at the highest levels of politics and im absolutely confident that she and president clinton will continue to do great work for people here in the United States and all around the world. Now, everybody is sad when their side loses an election. But the day after we have to remember that we are actually all on one team. An inter mural scrim able. We are not democrats first or republicans first. We are americans first. We are patriots first. We all want what is best for this country. That is what i heard in mr. Trumps remarks last night. Thats what i heard when i spoke to him directly. And i was heartened by that. That is what the country needs. A sense of unity, a sense of inclusion and a respect for our institutions and our way of life, rule of law, and respect for each other. I hope that he maintains that spirit throughout the transition and i hope that is how his presidency has a chance to begin. I also told my team today to keep their heads up. Because the remarkable work that they have done day in and day out often without a lot of fanfare often without a lot of attention working agencies work in obscure areas of policy that makes government run better and make it more responsive. And make it more efficient. And make it more service friendly. Its actually helping more people. That remarkable work has left the next president with a stronger, better country than the one that existed eight years ago. So win or lose in this election that was always our mission, that was our misfrom day one. And everyone on my team should be extraordinarily proud of everything they have done. And so should all of the americans i have had a chance to meet across this country who do the hard work of building on the progress every single day. Teachers in schools, doctors in er clinic. Small businesses putting their all into starting something up. Making sure they are treating their employees well. All the important work that is done by moms and dads and families and congregations. And ever state. The work of perfecting this union. So this was a long and hard fought campaign, a lot of our fellow americans are ex and some less so. That the nature of the campaign and sometimes contentious and noisy and not always inspiring. But to the young people who got into politics for the first time, and may be disappointed by the results. I want you to know you have to stay encouraged. Dont get cynical. Dont ever think you cant make a difference. Secretary clinton said this morning fighting for what is right is worth it. Sometimes you lose an argument, sometimes you lose an election. The path this country has taken is never a straight line, we zig and zag and sometimes we move in ways that some people think is forward and others think is moving back. And that is okay. Ive lost elections before. Joe hasnt. But you know so i have been sort of you beat me badly that is the way politics work sometimes, we try really hard to persuade people that we are right. And then people vote. And then if we lose we learn from our mistakes and we do some reflection and we lick our wounds and we brush ourselves off. We get back in the arena. We go at it. We try harder the next time. The point though is that we all go forward. With the presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens. Because that presumption of good final is essential to a vibrant functioning democracy. That is how this country has moved forward for 240 years that is how we pushed boundaries and promoted freedom around the world, expanded the rights for our founding to all of our citizens and that is how we have come this far. I am confident that this incredible journey we are on as americans, will go on. And i am looking forward to do everything i can to make sure the next president is successful in that. Ive said before, i think of this job as being a relay runner, you take the baton and you run your best race and hopefully by the time you hand it off your a little furnish further ahead. And i think we have done that because ultimately we are all on the same team. Thank you very much everybody. President obama said that he predicted the sun will come up in the morning and in fact he saw the sun shining on him at the rose garden as he made the remarks. President obama campaigned forcefully against donald trump and said just now he will work for a Successful Transition. We are all on the same team and will meet with donald trump and he came into the office a friendly congress, trump comes in with a Republican Congress and well see what happens and what they speak about when they meet tomorrow. Donald trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead. Our constitutional about 45 minutes ago Hillary Clinton conceded the race to the white house for donald trump in her long awaited statement, she said she was sorry for not winning the election and that losing is painful and will be for a long time but she was indeed gracious. The day after the election 2016, donald trump will be the 45th president of the United States, you heard from his opponent Hillary Clinton, who has conceded the tight polarizing race and you just heard from president obama, by winning trump is the first person to win the presidency after never having held Political Office since dwight d. Eisenhower in the 1950s
