The major verdict in the erin andrews trial. The sportscaster leaving the courtroom with a huge win. A jury awarding her 55 million over the secret nude video a stalker recorded at a hotel. Abcs eva pilgrim has the very latest for us from nashville this morning. Good morning, eva. Reporter good morning, amy. After almost two weeks of an emotional trial, centered around that naked video of erin andrews, it took the jury about six hours to make a decision. And one juror telling abc news, they wanted this verdict to send a message. 55 million, correct . Yes, sir. Reporter erin andrews overcome with emotion as the judge read the verdict. The jury deciding the nashville mar vot shares the blame for that secretly recorded video seen by more than 17 million people. Erin andrews later tweeting this statement. Ive been honored by all the support from victims around the world. Their outreach has helped me be able to stand up and hold accountable those whose job it is to protect everyones safety. Its ongoing and its going to be ongoing for the rest of her life. Reporter andrews claimed the hotel made it easy for her stalker, Michael Barrett to get a room next door to hers and through a peephole he altered shoot video of her getting out of the shower. The hotel claims he was a criminal who tricked them into gaining access and one juror saying the only debate for the group was how much to pay her. The 55 million payout will be split almost in half with barrett taking 51 of the fault. The Hotels Management company and owner, 49 . An amount that high sends a pretty strong message. The Hotel Industry we just felt like they need to get the message that this is somebodys privacy. Its their personal life and you got to take that seriously. Reporter the hotels lawyers disappointed with the outcome saying they hope to eventually talk to the jurors before deciding if they will appeal. Keep in mind this had never happened before and hadnt happened since. There are all kinds of measures that were undertaken after this was discovered, what mr. Barrett had done. Reporter the hotels lawyer says the nashville marriott has installed peephole covers to make sure this never happens again, amy. Eva pilgrim, thanks so much. Joining us now abc news chief legal analyst, dan abrams. Six hours. Were you surprised by such a quick and large verdict. I was stunned by the speed. This was a long jury trucks with a lot of complicated legal questions. But lets be clear. This was a huge win for erin andrews. Not just in terms of the number, but in terms of the way the verdict came down. Meaning the concern for erin andrews was too much of this verdict will be for barrett, the guy who actually filmed it. Why is that a problem . Hes got no money so the real question was how much is going to be allocated to marriott so by doing this verdict at 51 responsibility for barrett, he was clearly the guy who actually did it, but then a whole 49 for marriott, thats about as good a verdict as she could get in terms of the split. Not only do you have this big 55 million verdict but this 26 million verdict against marriott so all in all a really big win for erin andrews. Do you think that the amount will hold, though, under appeal. The first question is going to be for the judge. The judge is going to review this verdict first and if the judge thinks that its excessive, the judge could actually be involved in reducing it first of all even before an appeal but i think that theres very likely this verdict will stand largely even if its reduced a bit. All right, dan abrams, we appreciate it. Thanks so much. We showed them sons of money coming in against you and our poll shows you falling off your peak, both ted cruz and marco rubio beating you in headtohead matchups. Are you worried this is drawing blood . No, i think were doing very well and leading in michigan and were leading in mississippi and nationally were leading as i think you see the cnn poll had us at 49 to 15 . But certainly theyre spending tens of millions on fighting me, the establishment and, you know, they would rather not see me in there. You had failed people mitt romney talking, one of the worst campaigns ive ever witnessed in my life and hes out there now speaking negatively as negatively as he can. You know, where was that energy when he was fighting obama . He disappeared he was a terrible candidate so i guess, you know, i would imagine Something Like that could have an impact but we have a lot of loyal people. Nobody would call Michael Bloomberg a failure. Heres what he said. Hes not getting in because hes worried it might help you and said trump has run the most divisive and Demagogic Campaign ive seen preying on peoples prejudices and fears. I love their potatoes and i doing well in idaho and doing well in hawaii, so i just dont know what to tell you. Meantime the number of prominent people comparing you to adolf hitler is growing by the day. You saw over the weekend louis c. K. And glenn beck called you a dangerous man and yesterday the mexican president said youre using the same language that ushered in hitler and mussolini. I cant remember that kind of comparison being used against any other president ial candidate. Does it suggest to you should tone down your rhetoric and tactics . Well, maybe so but i mean, look, i have a tremendous following. We want to make America Great again. Its a strong following. I dont know about the hitler comparison. I hadnt heard that but its a terrible comparison. Im not happy about that certainly. I dont want that comparison but, you know, we have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and people agree with that and we dont want to lose our jobs to china and we dont want to lose our jobs to mexico and japan and all these countries taking our jobs away from us like were children. We dont know what were doing. We have leaders that dont know what theyre doing. Were losing so much in this country and were losing were losing the spirit and we just cant do it so i have to be i have to be strong and, again, i have a group of i have a tremendous following. You know, the republican, the biggest story in politics is how many people are going to the primaries on the republican side, its a record number. Theyre up 55 , 60 . Some are up as much as 100 .
