matt ackland has more. >> reporter: on that day, the explosion was so huge that it damaged six businesses here at the penn mar shopping center in forestville and has been rebuilt here. most of the businesses have relocated to the other side of the shopping center. >> it's hard to forget this video. a massive explosion caught on camera. at the time, neighbors told fox 5 that the blast could be felt several blocks away. >> glass and all the bricks are coming out like big blow, you know? >> i live three blocks away and i felt it. my house shook. >> reporter: authorities say it was a buildup of natural gas inside the building and then a spark that caused the explosion. it took only 20 minutes from the time the 911 call was made until the shopping center exploded. tonight, things are looking better. the shopping center is a alive with customers again. ligha's pizza destroyed had a big grand reopening today and customers were happy to see it. >> we're excited that we have leto's back, at least in our neighborhood. >> we're glad to see, you know, leto's open. yeah, and they rebuild that. >> reporter: a total of 8 firefighters and one washington gas employee were hurt in that explosion but, fortunately, none of the injuries were life- threatening n. forestville, matt ackland, fox 5 news. the explosion was blamed on a gas leak ignited by workers at an empty store. the news edge in maryland where a man is charged with asking someone else to kill his wife. investigators say that robert boyd junior gave an acquaintance $1,000 in cash to do the job and gave the man a layout of the couple's home and a handful of oxycontin and that is when boyd was busted. he found what was being asked to do, you know, shocking and to some degree, unbelievable. and when he realized that, he believed that the threat was real, then he did the right thing and contacted police immediately. >> reporter: investigators say that boyd wanted the man to shoot his estranged wife and said he wanted her dead because he was worried about an impending divorce. and in fairfax county, police are reaching out to the county. they released this picture of a 2002 lexus ls 470. the victim's suv looks like the one picked and is now missing from the murder scene. the suv has virginia plates, xyw 8917. yong yun was found today in his home. the officers have gone through and looking for clues. they don't believe this was a random crime. d.c.'s police chief is going one-on-one with concerned neighbors and a northwest community. today's meeting comes after a series of shootings in petworth. over 100 people gathered to talk about crime with the d.c. police chief cathy lanier. the chief told the crowd her investigators believe that many of the shootings are retaliatory strikes against gangs and she asked the residents to be more forth coming than they have been about reporting suspicious activity. >> i'm looking for someone out of place in the neighbor. all of a sudden, you see, you know, in the evening hours cars frequent in an alley and it's not normal to hang out there, right? >> chief lanier, also reminded the crowd a $25,000 reward is offered in d.c. when information leads to a murder arrest. the man most likely -- likely to be mayor is getting help from the man who used to do the job. anthony williams joined vincent gray's transition team. and gray suggested he might want political support to raise taxes in the district. he won the democratic primary against incumbent mayor adrienne tenty in september. the general election is in november and so far, gray has no serious challengers. and -- >> talk about a great saturday. plenty of sunshine and temperatures on the comfort side. hopefully you got out. right now, 67 degrees in the district; 54 at gaithersburg. the same at frederick; 57, martinsburg and to the south, 59 and 61 degrees in annapolis this hour and 57 in baltimore. the skies are clear as well and that is because the ridge of high pressure is in control. look at the tropics, things have started to calm down a lot. the category 1 hurricane downgraded to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds at 70 miles per hour and that is headed to the atlantic and no threat whatsoever with no warnings or watches and is expected to continue weakening through into the next 24 hours or so and the ridge of high pressure in control, the mid- atlantic is benefitting and with very, very clear skying. things are about to change. we have a frontal system and this is the cold front starting to go to the the south and it will be a warm front and move back to the north. as we go into tomorrow, that is what is going happen and we're going to get a bit of a southerly flow and then we're going to end up seeing again, move to the south and that will create a disturbance. we could see a few showers in the forecast. and back to the weatherria. as far as the forecast is concerned for tomorrow, no shortage of sunshine for you. a few clouds and not very many. 73 degrees at midday and 79 for a daytime high and temperatures will continue to stay above seasonal and we have temperatures from 11 to 12 degrees and it was 83 degrees at national airport and holiday monday again, a chance of afternoon showers for you. the high around 78 degrees and clouds sticking around on tuesday. another ridge of high pressure, a weak one builds in to wednesday. that will set us up again for a chance of some wet earth. in the meantime, enjoy the rest of the weekend. hopefully you will get outside and enjoy your sunday and part of holiday monday. maureen, will?
