Not only do we need a complaining witness to solidify what we believe we saw in the video is in fact what we saw but also were not entirely sure that the carry takers or guardians of the child as depicted on the video are in fact the parents. Ocean drive the bridge between avalon and Sea Isle City closed because of safety concerns and tonight theres a mad scramble to fix this bridge before the peak tourist season. Parade of drivers in avalon and Sea Isle City being turned away from ocean drive. The toll bridge over Townsends Inlet one of three ways to get off the island is now closed until further notice. Its pretty dam important if you want to go to a supermarket or cvs over in sea isle. It means an extra, i dont know, 15 miles to go. Reporter the closure was after county engineers say an underwater inspection revealed cracks in at least two steel bridge support pilings 20 feet below the water line. Its an old bridge. It was built in 1939. Its steel, steel doesnt do so well Marine Environment and its a rough inlet to be working in. Reporter it wasnt the first time the bridge has been closed. In fact its been shut down four times in the last five years for maintenance and repairs. It turns it from a 15 minute ride to work to probably a 40 minute ride. Reporter closure a major inconvenience for people like john duffy of avalon. He uses the bridge every day to get to work in sea isle. Its tough especially with these small towns having to drive off the island to get back and forth especial physical youre just going from island to island. Reporter work on the bridge will begin immediately. Officials say they have no choice but to start right away. Right now 2,000 drivers a day use this bridge. Come memorial day, that number climbs to nearly 10,000. Were very concerned. We got to get this bridge reopened because here we are. Were in spring. Were coming up on memorial day weekend and the businesses are really hurt when that bridge does close. Reporter threat went even further. Man threatened to set the employee on fire. The clerk turned over 20 bucks and the suspect described as 55 to 60 years old fled the store.
