Data from a small number of card readers days after it told customers it discovered the security breech and removed the virus. I want to say how deeply sorry we are for the impact this incident has had on our guests. Apologies may not be enough. The breech at target was discovered not by the company, but by Justice Department investigators. January 17 article in the New York Times states your systems were open and quote, particularly vulnerable to attack. One small step would transition american retailer frs credit cards with magnetic readers to the kind of credit cards with computer chip ids that europe has been using for decades. We think the answer comes down to money. Its expensive to update the technology at the point of sale. Its expensive to reissue cards. There is also a push for new laws to require businesses to inform customers of problems more quickly. Even give consumers the right to sue companies that lose their data. This information is not yours. Its entrusted to you. It belongs to the consumers. Take a look at the two different kinds of cards i have in my wallet. This one relies on that ol technology that carried the music on your cassette tape recorder. Nobody has those anymore. This one has the chip inside that actually creates a new id number every time that you use it. If stores require you to punch in a pin number, that is one more layer of security. The crooks are clearly going to keep trying to defeat all of these things, but the system with the pin number and the chip is much more secure. But of course, wed have to wait until 2015 before that is more widespread . 2015 they will have this rolled out and theres a battle. Its interesting, between the banks and the retailers. The banks can deal with the fraud. They think its cheaper than changing the system. But its us, the consumers that have to deal with the fallout. It drives up costs. Be careful and protect those numbers, please. Nobody zoom in. He is brave to show that on tv. You showed your numbers. The d. C. Council on a bill decriminalizing pot possession. It wasnt without controversy. Bruce johnson joins us from the Wilson Building with more. The vote was 111. Yvette alexander cast the only vote against this measure. Marion barry wasnt here today and unlike in some other states where they voted to decriminalize marijuana, the debate here didnt have as much to do with the harm or lack thereof of marijuana. It had more to do with how the laws against marijuana use have been implemented by police. Take a listen. All right, the ayes have it. The d. C. Council was nearly unanimous in wanting to decriminalize the smoking and possession of weed. The aclu explains why. Black people were eight times more likely to be arrested for marijuana related offenses and more than half of those arrests were for possession alone. Only remaining issue today seemed to be smoking weed outside on streets and sidewalks in public. A majority of the d. C. Council said no to that. I dont think any parent wants to walk through plumes of smoke in front of their kids school, in front of a public library. This is not about whether we want to criminalize the possession. We want a public behavior that is disorderly. The smoking weed in public will get you arrested. Smoking in private probably wont. Unless you live in public housing, says yvette alexander. You are not allowed to have any drugs in your home. If you smoke marijuana in public housing, you will get put out. It doesnt say its okay, but it says were not going to put handcuffs on you. The decriminalization bill sponsor had fought against keeping pot smokers off the streets and subject to arrest when they do light up in public. You still do not want to make it a criminal offense to smoke marijuana on the street . It should be a civil offense. The majority of the city supports legalization. I think the council is just somewhat still stuck in the past. You can forget about legalization of marijuana, even though the voters want. This council doesnt appear to be close to anything like that. But, hold on to your seat. Coming up at 6 00, councilman Vincent Orange introduced legislation they will consider over the next several weeks. Legislation that would prohibit employers from testing for marijuana use unless its required by law for a specific position. They are willing to entertain that, at least discuss it. Ill have more coming up at 6 00, back to you guys. Thank you, bruce. And breaking news right now. Five people have been transported to area hospitals after two cars collided at the intersection of norbeck roads. These pictures are from sky 9. It took nearly 30 minutes just to get some of the victims out of those vehicles. A case that could determine the future of gay marriage in virginia went to court today. The judge says she will make a ruling soon. A controversial Loudoun County supervisor facing a recall and it appears an attempt to remove him from office will move forward. Let her pick up on sterling boulevard. Eugene was defiant as ever as he appeared in court where a judge recuesed himself and asked the state Supreme Court to find another judge to hear it. A group of citizens from sterling asked a court to remove from office, for failure to represent his district. The whole case is political because the group doesnt like his other job. As president of the conservative based group of the united states. I am the most direct. I am the most loud and forthright elected official in Loudoun County. What a shock. What a shock. That someone would not know that i am an elected official working my john as an elected official. The Citizens Group alleges he intermingled with public vacuum. We had a grand jury go out of its way to describe his misconduct. We had senture by members of the board of supervisors, all of whom are republicans who said not only would they censure him, they took away his committee assignments. No one wanted to take on responsibilities. They wouldnt appear in a bad light. A recall is rare in virginia. Citizens say they are taking the path by the board of supervisors, failed to reign in delgado who has been listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. In leesburg, wusa9.
