Were continuing our look back at the life and career of marion barry who after four terms in the Mayors Office was known as the districts mayor for life. Delia goncalves is live in our Satellite Center with a look at the former mayor, Council Member and of course civil rights activist. Delia, good morning. Reporter good morning, mike, andrea. Mayorelect Muriel Bowser even calling marion barry mayor forever. D. C. Was his adopted home. He grew up in the deep south. Came here a man on a mission. Washingtonians became his adopted children, brothers, sisters you can say. Many people that we spoke to say they owe marion barry a debt of gratitude. They changed their lives forever, they say, the minute he stepped on the scene. He first ran for mayor here in d. C. In 1978. The city was just a rundown struggling versi of what it is today. Marion barry was already deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement when he arrived here at the District Of Columbia. He was chair of the student nonviolent coordinating committee, and many say he was a political genius organizing the disenfranchised and poor washington offering not only hope but jobs. He ran a very rigorous campaign. Heres a look back. Marion barry cared. He took a stappedz. He said no to stand. He said no to raising property taxes. He said no to unlimited rent increases. He said no to putting people out on the streets. Where was erstling tucker . Where was Walter Washington . Take a stand. Vote marion barry for mayor. I will not sit by and watch home rooms [inerdisce]nibl today we have to celebrate our victory and we cannot lose sight of our yesteryears. I believe in four years there will be less people out of jobs, less folks that need housing, less people who dont have Adequate Health care, more students who are reading and writing and a whole new feeling about what we can do in our government. Reporter government here in d. C. Changed as they knew it. He came here in 197 and did 1978 and did not stop working for the people of d. C. , especially for the residents of ward 8, his adopted home ward. He worked for them until the day he died. In fact on tuesday, there will be his annual turkey giveaway and that is in ward 8. Hes had impact on services. Hes had impact on the persona of the city, its whatever your reaction is, marion barry is the District Of Columbia to so many people in the world, not just here. I mean the world marion barry is the person they think of when they think of d. C. Investigators are trying to find out whether alcohol or speed played a role in a crash that killed three people in our area. It happened on eastwest highway near Rosemary Hills drive early yesterday morning. That is near 16th street. Investigators say a clevery suburban ran off the road and slammed into a tree. The 21yearold man, a 24year old woman and a third woman were all killed. The age of the third woman has not been released. Five people were also taken to the hospital. Prince georges county police are looking for a black sedan with a broken headlight and bumper involved in a deadly hitandrun crash. Investigators say the driver hit a bicyclist in lanham. Then left the scene. This one happened early yesterday morning on Martin Luther king high near forbes boulevard. The victims name has not been eliseed. An iowa man arrested outside the white house last week is due in court for a bail hearing this morning. R. J. Kapheim is charged with illegally carrying a rifle in the district. The 43yearold man was arrested wednesday afternoon. Officers say kapheim first approached an agent and that someone told him to go to the white house. In remembering marion barry, there are a lot of things people did not know about him, including his involvement early in the Civil Rights Movement. Courtland cox worked with barry back in the early days of the student nonviolent coordinating committee. He said barry had the support of the White Community until he proposed a change take was not popular hong some business leaders. Because marion started saying that africanamericans should participate in the economy of this city. And the big change was when marion started saying that blacks had to have 25 equity participation in any Downtown Development that the city had money in. They didnt like that. An anxious community is awaiting a decision by a missouri grand jury over whether to indict a white Police Officer for killing an unarmed black teenager. The outcome was the focus of many Church Sermons in ferguson on sunday as the Community Waits for an answer. Danielle nottingham with more. I ask what will we do. Reporter many who went to church in ferguson sunday got a special message with their sermon. We have varying opinions about the killing and indeed about all the actions by both the protesters and by the police. Reporter the community is on edge waiting to see what happens once the 12member grand jury makes its decision on whether to indict ferguson Police Officer darren wilson. He shot and killed 18yearold Michael Brown in august. Protesters have demonstrated every day since the shooting. Some of the events have turned violent. Residents are bracing for more protests regardless of what the grand jury decides. More than a thousand local Law Enforcement officers have received special training on how to deal with protesters. Local and National Leaders are urging people to keep their demonstrations calm. Were calling upon our members, members of the community to respond to this decision in a nonviolent fashion. Local Officials Say once the grand jury reaches its decision, the prosecutor will wait at least 48 hours before its announced. But there is still no guarantee the grand jury will reach a decision this week. Angry protesters in new york city are demanding answers after a Police Officer shot and killed a a man in an apartment complex. The medical examiner has ruled the death of akai gurley a homicide. Gurley was walking in a dark stair well in brooklyn when two rookie officers were on patrol. Police say the gun of one of those officers went off accidentally. Protesters, including the reverend al
