The invisible injuries of war may be harder to notice, but they are no less severe, and now Service Members suffering with psychological wounds of war are getting to find some comfort in service dogs. Andrea mccarren shows us in our special assignment unit report. So that service dogs have helped in ways that medicine and therapy have not. But the current v. A. Regulations only approve service dogs for Wounded Warriors with physical injuries that limit their mobility. But that may be changing. What did you have to do in iraq that really was traumatizing. Taking somebodys life. Steven cero believes a service dog would ease his torment. Do you think having a service dog would have prevented you from attempting suicide . I think so. I dont go to malls. I dont go anyplace that really is going to have a lot of people i dont know. Randy short is convinced a service dog would get him out of the house. He only leaves for medical appointments. Its so easy to see those guys who sacrifice limbs as being deserving, and they are absolutely deserving, but when you see someone like me when it doesnt seem to be as great of an issue. Michaels dog credits his service dog with saving his life. The two have only been together for one year. Ive seen more improvement in myself, in my relationships with others, with the world in general as significantly changed in this last year that weve been together. Three combat veterans, one qualifies for a service dog because of his physical injuries. The other two do not. The v. A. Regulation requires a veterans injuries to be so severe they limit his a. To get around, but that rule may be changing. Ive seen it myself, and ive seen the impact that these dogs can have on veterans, and so im a believer. With roughly 20 veterans committing suicide every single day, the v. A. Secretary says theres no time to wait for scientific data. Evidence to prove service dogs help invisible injuries. I dont want to wait until the research is there. If theres something that can help our veterans we want pursuing it. And that brought us to this office. Having a Significant Mental Health problem can be just as limiting. He told us about a Pilot Program pairing highly Trained Service dogs with 100 veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress, anxiety or depression. It can immobilize you. It can make you house bound just about as easily as a physical limitation. So the v. A. Is now viewing its own regulations in a different way. The v. A. Is now looking at Mental Illness as a potential mobility issue. Exactly. Thats a big leap. For a lot of people it is. So far the v. A. Has approved eleven veterans for the program. There are 57 applications under review. The biggest limiting factor is a supply of trained dogs. It takes a long time to train these service dogs. You literally have to grow them, and then you have to train so you essentially need 100 highly trained dogs. Yes. To partner with veterans as soon as possible. Exactly, exactly. Why do you feel so strongly that a service dog would help you. Not a single bit of judgment. They love you no matter what youve done. This Program Gives you hope. Yes, yes it gives me a lot of hope. The v. A. Doesnt breed dogs but relies on outside organizations, mostly nonprofits to raise and train them. Not one of our three veterans had heard of this Pilot Program. In the last year being with him, ive taken on so much more responsibility and been able to do so much, that you know, we got to a place where we thought we can do this. Michael and his wife after ten years of marriage finally felt ready to start a family. If you trace it all back it starts with oli. Their son logan was born may 10th. Veterans with posttraumatic stress, depression or anxiety can apply to be part of this Pilot Project if they receive care from the v. A. Were told they should ar to be considered for a service dog under this program. Andrea mccarren wusa9. The v. A. Is also involved with a longterm study when it comes to service dogs and veterans with posttraumatic stress. The research was ordered by congress, and it tracks more than 200 veteran and service dog teams. Its going to take years to collect the data and analyze it however. The v. A. Also helps Homeless Veterans find a place to live. Often when they do those places come unfurnished. Thats why wusa9 is working to help our vets make their new houses homes through a furniture drive, and you can help this weekend. Just donate your new or gently used Household Items and furniture at the Loudoun Elks Lodge in sterling, virginia, this sunday.
