Austin Public Health officials have extended pandemic-related safety guidelines until mid-May, and updated its recommendations for people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The updated guidelines also included relaxed recommendations for school students.
More than 11.2 million Texans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, mostly between the ages of 16 to 49 years old. More than 8.2 million people in the state have now been fully vaccinated, according to the state health department's dashboard.
The Texas Department of State Health Services on Wednesday reported that more than half of the state's population who are older than 16 has now received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Experts see herd immunity on the horizon with the combination of growing vaccination rates and people already carrying the antibody from previous infections.
