Since March 10, when the first death was reported, 18,338 Michiganders have died from the acute respiratory illness. — A Breakdown of COVID-19 Data — The 24-hour data increase shows that 1,992 more people have contracted the virus. In addition, there were 99 new deaths, but 32 of those were identified by reviewing vital records. On Saturday, May 23 the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also announced changes to how COVID-19 testing data is reported to make it more accurate and relevant as the state continues to expand diagnostic testing.
