RICHMOND — Gov. Ralph S. Northam says Virginia can be faster at administering COVID-19 vaccines — and it will. On Wednesday, Northam set a goal of 25,000 shots administered per week that he wants to be reached "as soon as possible." But he said that also depends upon two factors, the supply of the vaccine and the speed in which it can be given. "We can be faster and we're going to be faster," the governor said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. "That starts with a simple message, use it or lose it. Empty those freezers and get shots in arms," Right now, Virginia's 23% vaccination rate is fifth-worst in the nation, according to numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, trailing Kansas, Georgia, Arizona and Louisiana.
