WCCB Charlotte's CW
July 14, 2021
The move comes amid pressure to remove names associated with the Confederacy.
Vance was a Confederate officer and former Governor of North Carolina. Chambers won a Supreme Court case in 1971 that desegregated buses in CMS, paving the way for integration.
The renaming is the latest in an effort to remove symbols of the Confederacy in Charlotte.
The first of nine street name changes will happen in September:
Jefferson Davis Street, Phifer Avenue (September 2021)
Jackson Avenue, Zebulon Avenue, Aycock Lane (November 2021)
W. Hill Street, Morrison Avenue (February 2022)
Barringer Drive (April 2022)
