They are very potent storms. The ones we were concerned about are just off to the east of allentown and approaching read ing. Well talk about the storms when i come back in a few minutes. A child immigration program, Jeff Sessions announced the daca program will end in six months. It allows 280 undocumented immigrants who came here as children to work or attend school. Thats actually more than 800,000. Sessions argued the program enacted by president obama in 2012 was an executive overreach. That would be an open borders policy and the American People have rightly rejected that. The Trump Administration will stop considering new applications for the Program Dated after tuesday. But any Daca Recipients with a permit set to expire before march 5th of 2018 can apply for a twoyear renewal. Congress has six months to take action that could potentially save the program. Todays announcement affects thousands of people across our area. New at 5 00, tim furlong met with local students in delaware who are enrolled in daca. Pz. Reporter around this big table, a bunch of dreamers. University students who just got the news that daca is going away. Were not just americans on paper. Reporter these students brought to the United States when they were very young have gone on to be very successful. We are told all of them earn hoi grades and are leaders on campus. They say this country is their home. Every single day from elementary school, we got up put on our hands ob our hearts and said the pledge of allegiance. Reporter they have their back. They also have fatherly advice from senator tom carper who is promised to fight with them down in washington. So i would say chin up. A lot of people care about you. Reporter todays news has shaken these students. Their b parents might have brought them here illegally, but they want to be here working hard trying to live the american dream. Because america is is my home. Thats all i have ever known. And this place has given meso many opportunities. I think that its terrifying to think that maybe youll be sent back. Just in the past five minute, President Trump sent out a tweet saying, i look forward to working with democrats and republicans to Congress Immigration reform in a way that puts hard working citizens of our country first. There are tens of thousands of people in the Dreamers Program right here in our area. Mitch blacher breaks down the impact that todays decision has on our communities and also the economy. Were look iing at the real impacts of people in our area and across the country who are enrolled in this program. First, we looked at the raw numbers across the country. There are nearly 800,000 people who applied for and approved for the dreamer program. More than 347,000 in the states of california and texas alone. Now new jersey has more than 22,000. Pennsylvania, nearly 6,000. Delaware, around 1400. Now each of those people, think about this, paid 495 for an application fee. That means across the country, the government collected 390 million from dreamers. Now lets take a look at who the people in this program are. The rouls say they have to pay taxes but cant claim government benefits. 95 of them are currently working or in school. If they commit a crime, they are immediately removed from the program. And finally, here are where those applicants are from. Most are from mexico and guatemala. In nonspanish speaking country they come from south korea, brazil and the philippines. Poland is the only european country on the top origin list. Thats just a quick perspective at who the dreamers are and what they have at stake. Mitch blacher live for us, thank you. Sky force 10 was over the scene where the crash happened had just before 3 00 this afternoon. The victims work for the township public works department. One of them was flown to the hospital. The driver did stop at the scene. In north philadelphia, the search forc answers continues the Murder Investigation in the 22yearold Temple University student. The body of Jenna Buehrle was found over the weekend. She was killed just off temples campus after leaving a bar with a former student. Joshua is charged in the killing, but they still dont know the motive for the crime. They also want to talk to others who could have some information about this case. Right now, we want to talk to the roommate and e see what he has to say. Hes the only person facing charges in the crime. Now to new information in the case of a body dump ed on a street in trenton. The victim has been identified as 43yearold lillian durham. Her remains were found in a trash bag before 5 00 last night. The cause of death has not been determined. No arrests have been made. It happened at a home on cambridge street just after midnight. Police found the victim outside. Someone shot him multiple times a after he got into a fight with two men. Hes in stable condition. Hurricane irma, an historic hurricane is churning in the atlantic as it inches closer and closer. 500 Emergency Response shelters have been set up. People are stocking up on batteries and medicine. No one is ever fully ready for a category 5. Now is the time for residents to make their emergency plans. Tammie souza joins us with the littest storm track. I got to tell you throughout the island and in florida, people have cleaned out the stores. Youen couldnt find a generator in the state of florida to save your life. People are taking this seriously. This is a monster storm. Look how big the eye is on this. Bigger than the island of st. Martin. This is going to move right by there. This is going to be devastating for a lot of these islands even if it doesnt make a direct. This is going to become hurricane jose. Its going to be fish food. Its going to follow in the tracks and its going to get caught up in the same system that will eventually turn irma off to the north and the east. And across land. So lets take a look at the track as to whats going on here. This is going to be a pretty big deal. Right past st. Martin, the cone does go over both parts of the dominican republic, but if the track stays in the center of the cone, it will be to the north. Not that it makes that much difference when you have a hurricane the size of texas moving past you. Then maybe a quick landfall on cuba, maybe category 4 as it goes through the straits. This could stay a 5. My thinks it may make a hard turn and it could be the worst hurricane they have seen in florida. Well talk more about this and how we could see some of the rain coming up in just a few minutes. Some vacationers are cutting trips short because of irma. We went to Philadelphia International where travelers just in from puerto rico told us they are happy to be back home as the hurricane moves closer to the island. My thoughts are we need to get out of here. Because of whats churning in the atlantic. Yesterday we try ed ied to g flights back home a little early, but they were all sold out. A lot of people at the airport trying to get off the island. For those that live there, they are getting ready. Stocking up on supplies and groceries. The National Guard has already been activated in puerto rico more than 200 fema troops already on the ground. We feel bad for our new friends we met there and watching them board all the windows. And also tracking Hurricane Irma, a category 5 storm that could bring catastrophic damage do puerto rico and south florida on the right there were going to check in in just a moment. The latest show of force comes after north korea tested what they claim was a powerful thermonuclear bomb. Its small enough to be loaded on a missile to reach the United States. We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, family north korea, but as i said, we have many options to do so. U. S. Officials tell nbc news the white house plans to pressure other countries, especially china into helping end that crisis. Theres a warning for pennsylvania lawmakers. Today Governor Wolf said he will have to start freezing spending if they fail to pass a package to balance a nearly 32 billion budget. He said his decision day is september 15th. Many things are in jeopardy if a spending plan is not agreed upon. Hurricane irma now is strong category 5 storm headed into the caribbean. The rain has been on and off all day and this is one of the 500 Emergency Response shelters that have been set up all throughout the island. Inside people have been preparing meals and getting ready for those who might be displaced by Hurricane Irma. We have generators and enough to go to the hospitals. Our hospitals will continue to work 24 hours a day. Fema is on the ground. But we have done everything that is possible to be done at least in the city of san juan. A live look here. First alert meteorologist tammie souza has been tracking these storms live on the air since we went on at 4 00. The heaviest rain is in berks county. We have issued a first alert for the Lehigh Valley and berks county. Thats where we have the greatest risk of Severe Weather. We have seen it starting up to the north and west. This will continue through 9 00 tonight. Damaging winds up to 60 mile an hour winds with hail. We have even seen twornds off to the west. Well be on grd to see if we get anything spinning up from any of the storms. You can see the e severe thunderstorm watch. You can see it in richmond and reading. But they are moving very slow olympic they are not moving quickly through the area, they are just very intense. E we put this up several times. You can actually see some of the heavier rain and the intense hail cores associated with them. Thats the slice through the storms vertically. Speaking of the hail, these are the hail tracks on our radar and satellite. We have overlay laid it with the satellite imagery. So very heavy rain is making its way through parking lts of lanc county. Well see if it makes it into Chester County and delaware county. Heres the line of storms and you can see behind it a weaker line. Once this makes its way through the area, were just in for scattered storms on and off. A very summer like day. Were going to e get the storms rolling through. The entire area is going to be watching for gusty winds and strong storms. Temperatures in the 70s. And it looks like we quiet down for a very pretty but cooler than normal friday, saturday and sunday. Generally in the low to mid70s. Heres irma. Behind it is jose that will be fish food. Im concerned about the virgin islands. The eye of this storm, actually bigger than some of those islands. Here are all the models. You can see most of them take a track up the florida peninsula. We may get the remnants as early as nx week. Heres one forecast model right up the eastern side. There you go. Em remnants to us. The other forecast model that comes through goes right up the western side of florida. It could take another major hit. That may happen as early as this sunday. Well talk more about this in the next hour. Many students from across the area are unwinding from the first day of school. Students arrived bright and early. More than 800 students from go to this school. A lot of people marked the occasion with some photos. Parents took pictures before they boarded the bus for their first day at middle school. Tomorrow students in camden county, Public Schools some Charter Schools and camden and head back for class. And tomorrow septa is offering philadelphia public and parole yall students a free ride. Students get free weekly passes from school. Septa says they want to make sure students can get to School Tomorrow to pick them up. College students are heading back to class. Tonight a renewed push to. Keep them safe on campus. This all comes after a Temple University student was murdered. Student says they know what to do to stay safe, so why are some not following the rules. What they told us ahead. And helping her hometown, the Hurricane Harvey relief effort that beyonce is hosting right here on nbc 10. International speedway is collecting items for victims of Hurricane Harvey. They are looking for baby supplies, cleaning supplies, nonperishable items and cases of water. The hotel will be donating loads of towels and toil tries as well. Drop them off today and tomorrow at the ticket office. Houston native beyonce host a telethon to help with the Harvey Relief efforts. The hand in hand benefit will air here on nbc 10 next tuesday at 8 00 p. M. Oprah, George Clooney and jamie fox just a few of the celebrities expected to participate. Proceeds will go to a number of organizations in houston including the united way, save the and habitat for humanity. Its all eyes on irma waiting hours just to get gas and groceries. You would see the gustiest winds, hail, if you got a brief tornado it would be in that segment. This is the doppler radar. You can see we have added a little raes. We have added more severe storm warnings. As well as berks county and the Lehigh Valley. So were seeing the storms now begin to lean a little bit to the east. And thats going to bring them into. The philadelphia area. You can see they are traveling more northward than they are eastward. We have the severe thunderstorm watch until 9 00. These warnings are until 6 15 for Chester County and Montgomery County. Westchester, we go out to allentown and reading and we have severe thunderstorm warnings still going because of hail and 60 mile an hour winds thats the potential with this. Those are until 5 45. Youre going to be watching this as it moves across the area. This is our 3d representation thats starting to get taller and fill in. So they are alreactually gettin little more intense.
